This is going to be interesting because I bet it is entirely regional.
Here, I would say anything over 100k a year (per family) is considered "rich," or at least well off.
55k to 80k I would say is a normal, middle-class family income around here.

Here I would say 30-40k per household is "middle class"
70k and up is "upper class" and 150k and up are rich.

That sounds consistent with whats around here. Although I would say "rich" with a family is probably over $150/year
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
I agree with you--around $60-80K per family would be middle class.

I would say in the area where I live, $40-80,000 is middle class, $80-120,000 is upper-middle class, and $120,000+ would be considered rich!

I don't want to offend anyone, but It seems to me that the lovely members of HB don't appear to be a random sample of the U.S. population. Just from the posts I have read over the last yea.r, It seems like the majority of members are wealthier than average? I wonder why that could be...maybe because we have so many NY bees?

Where I live, middle class would be for a family of 4, $70,000 - $200,000.

This is a good reminder that we should consider moving out of the NYC area!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: If you posted this survey on Babycenter, the answers would be very different... seems to be a much younger aged mom and therefor less educated, lower income people on those type of websites.

I think 50k - 60k is middle class, in my area....
And I agree with @Rainbow Sprinkles - hellobee seems to be wealthier than average America. That's ok though.
eggplant / 11287 posts
@kml636: this website also is more educated as well. I have noticed that! Why are more established (educated, wealthy) parents attracted to this site?

80k and up is "upper class" and 150k and up are rich.

I actually think middle class is not purely about income but also about educational level, type of work/employment and behaviour (eg being aware of and observing social etiquette). I'd say a typical middle class family is one where both parents are college educated and work white collar office jobs.
I can think of a few examples of families which are middle class in terms of income but not in terms of lifestyle if that makes sense.

@oliviaoblivia: holy nuts I would be a millionaire here if I made that much. I live in what is considered an "affluent" neighborhood and I don't even know anyone who makes that much! haha

@kml636: "middle class would be for a family of 4, $70,000 - $200,000" ...that sounds about the same here (unfortunately!)
honeydew / 7589 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: Yes that's true.
I appreciate the proper spelling and grammar, intelligent conversation, and less cattiness than other sites. I don't know why that is, but whatever the reason I'm happy this site is the way it is.

Probably pretty similar to what @annie624 suggested. Although I think you can't really determine the middle class through income. I think it's determined more by what you have left after you've paid your expenses.

lol... we are under $30K so I guess that would make us "poor."
You, know, it's funny the terms we use, right? Like "middle class" and "upper class" typically refer to income, while "low class" has a strictly negative connotation and while it can be applied to people of the low income group, I think it can also apply to some in the higher tax brackets too
I guess to some class and income and the same? Interesting from a sociological standpoint.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: it's pretty ridiculous is our hood. A starter house (total fixer upper) is about $1.5M. We need to move.

@oliviaoblivia: can I ask where you live?
I am south of Seattle.
honeydew / 7589 posts
@glimmersnaps: That's ok, we're "poor" too. We're under 20k, but we chose this career knowing the financial implications.
We do have a lot of benefits with our job though, including huge educational assistance if we want higher education, and huge educational allowances for our children, all the way through college.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Yes! When I was on WeddingBee, it was the same way. Women making 150k a year on their own is unheard of in my area. I think it does have a lot to do with location, most of HB are in NY. I'm not sure why that is though.
I'm from a little po-dunk town where 150k is about as good as it gets so it's always neat to see people making that alone and wishing they made more! I think DH and I's salary would make some people on here laugh out loud.

@London Mama: I agree with you.
In regards to income level, I think of “middle class” as income enough to support saving specifically for retirement, owning a home/being able to pay a mortgage, being able to save for a child’s college education, having health insurance and being able to save money every month after household expenses.
Its interesting because most of these figures in this thread are well above the actual medium household income in the US; although when polled, most people believe they are "middle class". Its definitely a sort of lifestyle rather than straight income.
pomegranate / 3809 posts
I think 100k-150k would be middle. An ok house is easily 450k+ in a decent place.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Well I don't think I'm in the majority here on Hellobee then, we are definitelly not "well of" We are definitely on the lower end of middle class! But I'm happy and we are living okay. Don't get me wrong we are pretty much paycheck to paycheck, but then again we are young and paying off loans!
eggplant / 11287 posts
@yoursilverlining: it is an interesting concept because we are in no way able to do all of those things you listed, but our income is still well above average for our area.

@oliviaoblivia: good lord! we just moved to toronto, and i wouldn't totally agree with that--are you meaning specific area?
apricot / 359 posts
@oliviaoblivia: I'd no idea toronto real estate was that expensive. I'm in vancouver and the real estate is insane here (moreso than TO, which is why $1.5M for a starter is such a shocker to me!)
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
In our area, anywhere from 50-100 combined would be middle class. We are at 60k combined, but until last year we were definitely not middle class, we made probably 40k combined. You can buy a beautiful 4bed/3 bath house, 2500sq ft for about 250k here.

@Mrs. Lantern: @kml636: I agree - $70k - $200k is middle class here.

City:$39,444
State: $43,674
There, now I'm not just guessing. Good guess though, right?
pomelo / 5791 posts
I'd say 80k-100k is middle class around here.
100k-150k is upper middle class
150+ is rich!
I wish I were in that last group. Or even second to last, lol
