Charlie doesn't really have tantrums now that he's 5. He more gets angry. For him, we really have to acknowledge his feelings and be empathetic. Changing the environment like going on a walk helps too. Once he is calm, he can much better understand/process his emotions. Time outs did not work for him.

With Olive I usually just ignore her. She tantrums a couple of minutes then says she's sorry. But she does throw some big ones over seemingly ridiculous things (she wanted to put water on her toothbrush herself), that are much harder to calm down. But those are sometimes related to being overtired too, in which case I try to appease her. She usually asks for the other parent when she's tantrumming, and that helps too.

I know they grow out of the tantrum stage so they actually don't bother me as much as the defiance!
