Just got home from the hospital with DD today and we are starting the journey of 2 kids! Our first hiccup tonight was that DS was wanting me to come and play with him while I was nursing. He was crying, reaching for my hand, and saying "come, come"… Talk about breaking my heart. DH is home this week to help, but what do you do when you are on your own and need to sit and nurse? Any tips?

I mastered nursing in a wrap, so if I ever wanted or needed to be able to move around or use my hands I could. It was very helpful when Ellie wanted or needed attention, or if we were out and about. I know some moms put together a "nursing basket" (I know Mrs. Chocolate wrote a post on it) of activities and toys for their older child to use while they nursed.

This was an issue for us at first too. DS loves reading with me and he always brings me a book and climbs in my lap. When we first came home with DD he'd walk up to me with a book while I was nursing and he'd get really upset when he couldn't climb into my lap. Once DH went back to work I started nursing sitting on the living room floor where all of DS' toys are. Now if he wants to show me something while he's plating I'm available to him. It took awhile for him to understand that he can't climb into my lap when I'm nursing but it just took time. Now he'll come up and just sit next to me. Good luck!

@Mrs. Twine: I am hoping to learn to nurse in a wrap this time. DS is super busy and into everything, so it is hard to keep him focused. If I could be mobile that will help I am sure. For now, though, we are still working on positioning, latching but I will try later. How old was baby when you started nursing in a wrap? I will need to go back and look at Mrs. Chocolate's post too!
@Running Elley: I am hoping we can get to this point. DS has been into his books recently so maybe if I keep some of the favorites away for during nursing that will help. I am also already looking forward to more efficient nursing sessions! I know it will be rough here in the beginning, I just hope it passes quickly. DS hurts himself when he is really upset/mad so that worries me too.

@creativemomma15: She was less than a week old when we started. She had to be in the NICU for around 48 hours after birth due to having trouble with oxygen levels, but when we got home on day three I started wearing her to nurse some of the time.
