With the recent Charleston, SC murders the Confederate flag has entered a national debate.
How do you feel about the flag?
Do you think the flag should be removed from public propety? Should stores stop selling it for private use?

This quote from John Oliver's show sums it up lol:
"The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that should really only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world."

@runnerd: Perfect!
I think the Confederate flag is garbage, but it's really pissing me off that's all the "national discourse" is focusing on. What about firearm legislation, toxic masculinity, or our country's systemic history of violence against black people?

I think it sucks that something historic has been appropriated by hate groups. At the same time I'm Canadian and not from the south so I don't feel like I know the whole story of how the flag is used today.

I think it should be removed from all public/government buildings; it isn’t a state flag and it isn’t the country’s flag, it has no place being flown at any US government building in the same space we fly legitimate flags.
Ta-Nehisi Coates was spot on as always, I highly recommend this article: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/06/what-this-cruel-war-was-over/396482/

I think it's completely inappropriate to fly it on government property. This was a group we were at war with, it would be like flying the British Flag.

While I don't support the use of the Confederate flag at all, I also don't like feeling like companies are capitalizing on the current focus in order to earn some goodwill with the public. Amazon and eBay have banned the sale of Confederate Flag merchandise in the last week, but were they not aware all along that it was a symbol of racism and oppression? Of course they were, they just didn't care to ban it until it suddenly made good business sense. And that annoys me.

I feel that removing it from the confederate memorial was a little too much. We cannot pretend the confederacy didn't exist, and removing a flag from a memorial seems like the very last thing we should be focusing on. Also, I live in the south and all this entire thing has done is cause a lot more tension and anger. I could simply ignore people proudly displaying their flags before, but now they are making such huge deal about it that it is constantly being shoved in my face. Fun times.

@yoursilverlining: Agree with you 100%. And thanks for the link to that article!

I'm just amazed that everyone that flies the confederate flag suddenly has become a history expert. And if they believe what they say, why aren't they flying all the flags that have been represented over the history of our country? I personally really like the Betsy Ross flag, but there aren't masses of people flying it.
So all the people that are professing it's a preservation of our history and not a symbol of anything offensive, I just can't understand why other flags aren't equally important to them.
And while it's appropriate to remove from governmental grounds and it's a step in the right direction. We still have a long way to go.

@yoursilverlining: Agreed! It's not a state flag get rid of it, there is absolutely no need to have it on government property. However, I think it should be a store's choice to carry it or not. Yes, I'm 100% against the racial negativity that can be associated with it, however I think it does fall under freedom of speech in my opinion if government starts regulating this, what stops them from regulating other things as well?

I don't think the flag should be shown on public grounds, because of the principles it stood for. I'd be fine with a museum though. That feels much more appropriate to me.
I think most retailers are realizing that selling items like Nazi and Confederacy flags are going to hurt them more than it will help them. So I'm not surprised that most retailers are banning their sale.

I think the flag has no business being flown on government grounds. But I also think it's crazy to think that this is the issue. Maybe if we poured as much energy and passion into gun control, tragedies like this would stop happening.

@MamaG: I call BS on the people that believe waving a confederate (or rebel) flag is for preservation of history. Unless it is for a specific confederacy memorial or museum, the only people that display those flags are the people that believe in what the confederacy stood for and believe that the "south will rise again". Most of my family are white trash, rebel flag waving people, and trust me....their intent has nothing to do preservation of history and everything to do with racism. Sorry if I offend anyone with what I said, but it is what it is.
pomegranate / 3393 posts
I'm shaken every time I see it, and I live in upstate NY! Living in the south and frequently seeing it must be very upsetting.
I'd be happy if it disappeared, frankly along with all its defenders.
watermelon / 14467 posts
As a historian, I think it should be relegated to museums and history books and not flown on government property.

@yoursilverlining: Love Ta-Nehisi!
@mamag: Agreed. I like the Betsy Ross flag, too - maybe we should start flying it!
@shootingstar: Exactly!

To me, it's just as bad as flying a flag with a Swastika on it. The flag represents a past in which hate and discrimination were the rule of the land. It is an important and undeniable part of this country's history, but those kind of artifacts belong in a museum, not flying at the State Capital building.
eggplant / 11716 posts
Ugh, I grew up in remote west Texas, and I've had to unfriend a couple of random HS facebook "friends" over this--one guy changed his damn profile picture to the confederate flag. I can't take it.
Needless to say, I am not a fan. If I ever see a confederate flag, bumper sticker, shirt, or ANYTHING, I just automatically assume the person is a white supremacist (along with a lot of other assumptions like uneducated, redneck, and many other not-very-nice-things) and I keep my family far, far away.

I am against what the flag stands for and I think it definitely should not be flown by any government organization. I wish big retailers had stopped selling it long ago. I wish people were more progressive and accepting of others. I don't believe in revising history though. I think symbols like the confederate flag and the swastika are unfortunate parts of our history, I don't support their use at all today, but wiping them out of history denies the atrocities generations before us faced.
@littlebug: yes, exactly.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
@mrbee: But that's the thing, most of the retailers who have banned the confederate flag in the wake of this focus, have not banned nazi paraphernalia.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@TrailRunner: would you think the same about a WWII memorial in Germany flying a nazi flag for all of their soldiers that died? (Not intended as snarky, just conversation)
@ms.line: I agree.
@Peasinapod: it was never just something appropriate though. It was a battle flag of a people fighting against the U.S. govermment because they didn't like laws that were passed limiting their ability to buy, sell, and use humans. They said the states should have the right to decide if they get to enslave people or not and so they violently rose up. It shouldn't be a proud history, but people here (in the south) still cling to it.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@Truth Bombs: I think that may be partly a matter of cost, and it will change over time as visual recognition software gets better at spotting stuff like this automatically, and it gets cheaper to filter listings for certain symbols. YouTube used to be filled with infringing music, but now they're really adept at identifying this stuff!
kiwi / 585 posts
@travellingbee: over their memorial...yes. I am not saying that I in any way support the flag or anything like that, but they died for a cause they believed in at the time and I don't feel that removing the flag from their memorial is very appropriate. I'm not saying that regular Government buildings should be waving it, but the underlying problem is not a confederate flag at a confederate memorial.
pear / 1998 posts
I'm actually happy this is an issue and there is (finally) being something being done about it.
It's obvious that nothing is going to be done about gun control. If Sandy Hook didn't change anything, I'm not sure anything will. I'm devastated this is the case, but until we get new congresspeople and the NRA loses its power and influence - we're at a standstill.
However - I can't imagine being a black person living in a state where the government flies the confederate flag. I think this is a long-overdue and important turn of public opinion. I think it is important that our current government is taking steps to show that it has no affiliation with sentiments from the Civil War confederacy.
Also, I think there is a difference between confederate soldier memorials honoring the men that died fighting for the confederacy (I don't think it necessary for them to fly a flag at the memorial) and honoring/glorifying the generals and leaders of the confederacy.

Not good. I think Robin Williams summed it up pretty well in one of his stand-up shows: "All those old senators going: 'The confederate flag is just the symbol of states' rights.' Yeah, and the swastika is just a good luck charm."
@yoursilverlining: I loved that article -- he always has great insights.

@Anagram: This. I grew up with the assumption that anyone who displayed the flag was a blatant racist... Of course, I had no idea until recently that it was actually a part of MS's flag...nor of the culture of waving flags at Ole Miss sporting events.
To take John Oliver's sentiments a step further, I wonder what happens when you take away an "easy" symbol and identifier such as this? Just because racism is less overt doesn't mean it's gone away...
grapefruit / 4671 posts
People just make me ill. So hard to believe that it is necessary to make people see why this would be offensive. In 2015. Ugh.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I assume anyone who has the confederate flag up is white trash. It always seems to be hillbillies lol. The only places I feel it's appropriate is a museum, confederate memorial, or a civil war battleground (although typically both era flags are flown). I know some people see it as a symbol of the south, but it has negative connotations.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
I find the flag horribly offensive and in some occasions have feared for my safety when seeing it displayed on people, cars, and property. *ETA: as a presin living in the South, I can tell you it's not just poor, white "red necks" that sport it or profess it's "heritage not hate" and "Southern pride." I abhor that pride line b/c it once again upholds a myth that black people are not part of American history.*
That flag has no business on public government buildings. It's sad that it took this tragedy for most Americans to voice their opposition and lobby their elected officials to remove it. Erecting these flags on state houses during the Civil Rights error ('50s & '60s) when states already were flying the American flag and their own state's flag was a terror tactic against a portion of their citizenry.
While I am happy that I won't have to pass store aisles stocked with the Confederate flag I feel it should not have taken nine people being murdered for people to realize the flag is a symbol of hate.
The fact the Charleston's flag is padlocked in place speaks volumes.
nectarine / 2465 posts
Obviously I don't agree with what the confederate flag stands for, but with that being said, I do believe freedom of speech and if someone wants to hang a confederate flag, that's their right. I do not agree with the push to ban movies like Gone With the Wind.
watermelon / 14206 posts
It needs to be taken off government property. It's tacky to have it there anyways. Plus, it's a small thing we can do to make people feel valued.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@TrailRunner: Fair enough. I guess I feel that when people die for a cause of hate, they don't deserve to be honored with a flag that represents that hate.
pineapple / 12802 posts
I had to delete a few people from my FB feed over the last few days because of this. Not even because they support it (although I do not, but that is their prerogative), but because through my lack of support for the history of that flag, I became an uneducated, liberal piece of shit, who doesn't know anything about anything, and the government has gotten to me, Canadians just don't understand, etc. I admit that, being Canadian, the confederate war wasn't a major topic in my education, but I think I can grasp the basics. I could obviously learn more, but all I learned the past few days from the supporters, was that threats of violence and ridiculous insults were rational responses to anyone who questioned or even politely disagreed with these people. Ugh. No thanks.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@travellingbee: haha! One of the very enlightening comments I read the other day about the reasons for the war, was that it had little to do with slavery and that it was "about other freedom of rights and stuff".
