We have houses. But seriously, we have a small community playground two houses down from us. We also have walking trails and a greenway is being built that will connect our community with the Wake County greenway system. Pretty excited about that.

Multiple parks, restaurants, shops, grocery store, and drug store/pharmacy . . . but we live in the city! That will change when we move to the 'burbs.
nectarine / 2797 posts
We have a supermarket and drugstore about 1/3 of a mile away. I don't walk there often since we drive by it on our way home from work and actually prefer a different further grocery, but during maternity leave I would walk up there occasionally.

Everything! We live in the city though.
Parks, Whole Foods, Starbucks, restaurants, banks, you name it.
nectarine / 2019 posts
We have parks, city pools, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. We also have everything from a McDonald's to fine dining restaurants.
eggplant / 11716 posts
We have everything within walking distance right now: grocery stores, restaurants, a couple of big box stores (rare around here), dry cleaners, etc. We basically live in a very walking friendly neighborhood.
coconut / 8234 posts
Since we're in the city and we walk almost everywhere, within a mile radius from our apartment we have: more apartment buildings, houses, the largest park in Brooklyn and a couple of other smaller community parks, a horse stable, grocery stores, drug stores, fast food restaurants, two cafes, a few sit-down restaurants, the post office, laundromat, and more. Whew!
That's the best part of living in a city!
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
Everything because we live in the city. I think I live on the other side of the park from @mrsjazz judging from what she describes about where she lives.
I think the best part is the organic food options. I regularly shop at 3 different grocery stores, a butcher and the farmer's market.
eggplant / 11287 posts
3-4 parks
4 coffe shops
Some restaurants
Organic pet store
Organic produce co op
Clothing boutiques
Public swimming pool
7-11
Subway And other fast food restaurants
A couple churches

Ah, so many things! And I actually don't live in the city anymore, but can walk to Trader Joe's, CVS, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, X-mas Tree Shop, pizza, deli, Dunkin Dounts and much more. I'm spoiled!
coconut / 8498 posts
A park and houses. We could walk to CVS and a grocery store, but it would be along a pretty major road, and I don't feel comfortable with that.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
Yup, we are in the city too, so pretty much everything-- there is a park with a big kid and a little kid playground AND a dog park a block away, which is awesome, expensive but totally decent grocery store, CVS, restaurants (nice ones and pizza/fast food), and boutique type shops, and a really good coffee shop. They just opened a Dunkin Donuts half a mile away and are opening a Starbucks soon-- sure signs that the neighborhood is getting even more yuppi-fied. There are bus stops 2 blocks from the apartment and the train is less than half a mile, but our actual street is almost all condos/apartments.

It's easier to mention the things not in walking distance (we're in the city)
Can't walk to mountains or oceans, but can walk to a lake, parks, a farm, multiple groceries, malls, greenbelt, offices, condos, a zoo, houses...

I'm in the suburbs of a medium sized city that is the capitol of the state and has a large university downtown as well. Its about a 10 min drive to the heart of downtown.
I am within walking distance (less than 0.5 mile) from the suburb's city hall, library, community center, our favorite coffee shop, pizza place, bank, library, wine bar, and farmer's market location. We have a park and walking trails in our neighborhood, and the fire department is right down the street. Grocery stores and gas stations are the only things that aren't really in walking distance.
It's the perfect location for us.

Gas station/convenient store, really good (really expensive) pizza place, park, skate park, splash pad, daycare, and NCC bike/run paths which go all the way through Ottawa & Gatineau park.
pomegranate / 3452 posts
Grocery store, so-so restaurants, dry cleaner, gym, library, car dealer, gas station
watermelon / 14467 posts
Shopping plaza with grocery store, gas station, another shopping plaza, and the post office. My neighborhood backs up to a busier shopping area, but it's really quiet.
honeydew / 7917 posts
I live within walking distance of Main Street, a college, country club, park, grocery stores, restaurants, and the neighborhood pool.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Within a half mile to a mile, we have a huge assortment of grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and shopping centers/stores. I live in the suburbs.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
A gas station and a turkey shoot and they are a little more than 1/2 mile.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
A park with tennis courts, playground, and basketball court.
A nature preserve.
Target, Walmart, Walgreens, Publix.
Panera Bread, Chipotle, Massage Envy.
Post office.
A bunch of other stuff. The two close by day cares are walking/stroller distance too.

What's reasonable, lol? We have walking trails, a park, skate park. It would be 2.5mi walk to shops, Starbucks, restaurants etc - I run that all the time, but pretty far walk for coffee
pomelo / 5257 posts
I live in a city so pretty much everything, haha. Tons of restaurants, a mall, grocery stores, dry cleaners, bars, liquor stores, coffee shops, parks... pretty much anything you can think of. I still miss having a car, though!
pomegranate / 3003 posts
We're about a block from the ocean, and within easy walking distance of a community park, elementary school, public library, a few casual restaurants, a coffee shop, and the weekend farmer's market.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
I live downtown, pretty much, but within a couple blocks we have a Thai restaurant, deli, few small boutiquey shops, supermarket, park and cemetary, school, a harp store (on my street... so weird!)... but mostly houses in a two-three block radius.
honeydew / 7091 posts
Reasonable walking distance = elementary school and its park. Besides houses, that's it. The library is probably a good bike ride away, but it's reeeeeaaaallyyyy hilly!
pomelo / 5509 posts
It depends on what your definition of "reasonable walking distance" is. I run/walk a lot, so to me, up to 2 miles is a reasonable distance. But if we're talking about half a mile or so, let's see...a convenience store, a gas station, a golf course, and an elementary school. But the convenience store has really good ice cream, the golf course has trails to run on and is an off-leash dog park in the off-season, and the school has a big grassy field and a playground. So it's not all bad.
A mile away is a pharmacy, a Dunkin' Donuts, a pizza place, a Subway, and a hospital.
However, I've walked almost 2 miles to restaurants/bars and then taken the city bus back.

lots! schools, bike path, stop and shop plaza (dollar store, super cuts, tanning, bank, mcd's), pizza places, liquor stores, cvs, gas stations, restaurants..
grapefruit / 4669 posts
Houses. And a high school, senior citizen center and fire station...but I don't see myself walking to any of those!
pomegranate / 3160 posts
A walking path, a park (if you're feeling really ambitious), a gas station, an elementary school...and an off-duty fire station. That's about it.

honeydew / 7916 posts
More houses, schools, playing fields, and maybe if I walked a long way a shopping center with a Wawa.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Behind our building is a pond with ducks, some park pavilions, a teeny kiddie park, a slightly bigger park, skateboard park, .5 mile walking trail, boys and girls club and sledding hill.
Businesses of interest: grocery store
downtown of our city that has a wonderful local pizzeria, bakery, diner style restaurants, Mississippi river, music in the park, salon, bank etc and this is just less than a mile away. I'm excited for getting ice cream with the kiddo this summer and walking there to get pizza as a family! It's a really cute part of town.
schools are across the street too.
