I just read that we'll be getting a Wegmans here in Brooklyn. I've seen it mentioned here, but I've never been to one in other areas. What do you like about it? Do they have their own store brands like Trader Joe’s?

I'm not a fan. It overwhelms me. I prefer Trader Joe's where there are only 4 aisles.
My mom loves it because she lives in a small town where there isn't a lot of choice in grocery stores. So Wegmans has a larger selection.

@BKCaribBaby: I think the shorter list might be what I don't love about wegmans. Number one on the list is their bakery! Everything is baked on site from cookies to bread to cakes. It's so freaking delicious. They have a hot and cold food bar. They have a sub shop in the supermarket that makes awesome humongous subs that WNY is known for.
They have their own brand and most everything is organic. I like TJ but I LOVE wegmans. They're also a great corporation and is consistently top 100 companies to work for according to Fortune 500. They pay for employees to go to college!!
And I love that they're locally owned for me.
It's definitely not a mistake that the first Trader Joe in our area opened 5 minutes away from a Wegmans. We're also getting a Whole Foods soon in the same area. But this area loves their local business so Wegmans won't lose much sales from these other two national chains.

We love Wegmans! Huge selection, lots of delicious cheese and prepared foods, some Wegmans-brand items but those are mostly generic rather than the unique items that TJ's has. We usually have lunch there and then shop. I think all the stores have a little model train overhead and my daughter loves to see the choo-choo.
squash / 13208 posts
@danda: yes the train! My kids love that!
Huge selection of meats and cheese - yum!
Wegmans does have their brand and I like it!
Prepared food is delicious!
They sell beer!!! Its the only grocery store around here that does!
On the weekends ours has an upstairs and they hire live bands.
ETA: they also have a section in the middle of the store that sells toys and household goods!!!
oh and bulk flour, nuts, candy, etc

Wegman's is HUGE. At least, all the ones I've been to are, not sure how it will be in Brooklyn. There's a gigantic prepared foods section, which has a lot of great variety. The store is close to my office so it's great for lunchtime. They also have a massive produce section. They have a lot of really nice specialty sections too - cheese, desserts, breads, meats, seafood, etc.
The store is a little overwhelming though. And it's laid out slightly differently than most grocery stores I'm used to.
Here's a pic my Dad took when I took him to Wegman's:

@ShootingStar: yeah, I can't tell from the rendering how big the Brooklyn one will be. But I think our Wegmans are comparable to Pathmark in NYC. Probably why they're building in Brooklyn and not Manhattan!
When I took my brother there the first time he loooved it! Especially their craft beer section. I'll have to let him know they're opening one.
They definitely have a cult following.

@regberadaisy: Yeah, all of my Buffalo/Rochester friends are OBSESSED with Wegman's. DH refuses to do our regular shopping there because it's too overwhelming, lol.

Happy to see this--we're getting one in town and all houses on the market that will be close to it make sure to advertise this fact. I was wondering what the big deal was! I think I've actually been to one--it was huge and it felt like merging traffic when transitioning from certain sections of the store. I liked it for the first 10 minutes, then got overwhelmed!
squash / 13208 posts
@ShootingStar: @Happygal: its is overwhelming and I don't do my weekly shopping there -
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@ShootingStar: hahha yeah we don't do our day to day shopping there either just simply because they're pricier. But comparable to TJ and certainly much cheaper than WF. But if I want something special I go to Wegmans! Special diets? Wegmans. They have a great allergen friendly section that goes beyond soy products.

I love everything about Wegmans, short of how crowded it gets. Otherwise? LOVE. Hot/cold bar, sushi, craft beers, mixer-sixers (in PA this is rare, to have beer in a grocery store), awesome cheese shop... There are tons of things for D to see, so he loves coming with me. We have a routine - see the cow (there's a big cow in the cheese shop), see the "monsters" (tank of live lobsters), pull the ticket at the deli, and then go see the train. I also think their prices are pretty good. I buy their family packs of meats and the prices are WAY better than at BJs. The family packs in general are great - $9.99 for 12 cups of Greek yogurt, $1.99 for 3 jars of spaghetti sauce, etc! If you shop carefully and don't get sucked in by all the pretty, fancy foods, you can get out of there pretty inexpensively. The employees are all really nice, too, probably because they get treated so well!

Oh, they also have a great catering department. We got almost all of the food for DS's first birthday party there. They had a great selection and all the platters were beautiful.

Thanks, everyone! Sounds like it's going to be fabulous! The Navy Yard is a large area, so it makes sense to put a large store like that there. It's not the easiest place to get to, but I am sure people will come anyway.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@ShootingStar: haha @BKCaribBaby: I'm sure the last time NYC was so buzzed is probably when Tim Hortons came to NYC!
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
Pretty much everything listed above! E LOVES to see the train!
I really like their store brands--they have interesting things I can't find at my local store, like fancy grain and rice blends, and they have a good international section (at least compared to my local store...)

@Mamaof2: I would have to be very organized before going to shop there. If you forgot to pick something up and had to back track to get it from another aisle, that would be a pain!

@ShootingStar: I'm surprised I've never run into you at Wegmans, I'm there like, twice a week
The bakery is fantastic, so is the catering, and all the prepared foods. To get specific, I love their organic rosemary olive oil bread, carrot cake, blueberry lemon loaf, grandpa's goes vegetarian tomato sauce, pre-washed & cut veggies (butternut squash, brussel sprouts, green beans, etc), their ice cream, um... what else... we get their organic eggs and milk, they have lots of 'family packs' of stuff like paper towels, etc. I do all my grocery shopping at Wegmans. There are only 3 in my region, but conveniently one is in my office park at work, and one is in the town next to where I live.
ETA: oh, and they have an app with all their products, and you can create a shopping list. It tells you which aisle everything is in, so convenient.

When I lived in PA, I loved Wegmans. Loved their desserts.
Now that I'm in WA and no Wegman, it sucks.
I have heard their popularity has grown and Wegmans can be just as bad as Costco when it comes to crazy parking and crazy people during the peak hours. Though, when I go home, I would still try to make a stop to see what they have.

I freaking LOVE Wegmans! There is one 5 minutes from my house and it is pretty much the only place I shop. Their store brand is a great value.... great quality for good prices. Actually, their prices in general are better than other local options... ShopRite, Giant, etc. The produce is usually very good quality. Their pre-marinated meats are very good (I esp. like the honey mustard pork tenderloin). LOVE their bakery, the deli, organic foods section, and the hot/cold food bar... the food bar isn't cheap, but it's a great place to grab a quick meal with LO. They have a child friendly dining area at our Wegmans, with little tables, a tv playing cartoons, etc. They have a lot of cooking classes and other activities for kids and families as well.
@littlebug: My LO loves all the same things... seeing the lobsters and the whole fish laid out in ice... the cow in the dairy section, the train that runs around the ceiling. I have had the same experience with the employees as well and have overheard employees taking about how much they like working there.
honeydew / 7504 posts
@Shutterbug: Oh, yeah, the app! I create my shopping list, and it gives me a pretty accurate estimated cost for my specific location!
@78h2o: I agree, I think their prices are better than most of the other grocery stores in the area. What gets me is buying all the rare/fancy stuff or the expensive cheeses. That's where I start to see my bill skyrocket.
kiwi / 635 posts
I also love the app! I share the login with my husband so if needed I can create a grocery list and he has confidence that he can shop by himself and get the exact items we need :).
grapefruit / 4703 posts
@danda: haha I do the exact same thing. Or rather I used to, but then they opened a location literally in the same office park as my work, and now he's the one adding things to the list for me.
coconut / 8472 posts
@Shutterbug: Haha, that would be really funny! I was thinking of going to Lexington for lunch but now I'm kind of craving Wegman's after all this, lol.

@regberadaisy: LOL! Yeah, I still haven't made it to Tim Horton's.

Everything. They are amazing. Such great selection, everything is always so fresh and they have fantastic customer service. Best grocery store I have ever been to! Wish we had one here.

its been years since I was at wegmens. We use to go when we visited close family friends in Rochester. Its HUGE! I think it reminds me of Fairway

it's never a place to go and grab something but if you have time to hang they have a TON to offer! bakery is my fave and they usually have cafes.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@regberadaisy: YES, what's NOT to love?! Also, interestingly, I like the Wegman's closer to me better. Somehow the one out by the mall overwhelms me. But your point is well-taken.
I love Wegman's. Their brand is really good, and they've got lots of variety. I have to be a little cautious, because I can easily buy all the things if I'm not paying attention. But Wegmans is awesome!!

i grew up with wegmans and have not found a grocery store better than wegmans since being away from it!! we moved to the west coast over a decade ago and i still miss it! the bulk candy section!! you'll never find another grocery store with one like it. the cookies! the cafe section! we used to go to wegmans and just hang out in the food court. haha
(this is probably only half of the bulk section!)
watermelon / 14206 posts
I love wegmans! Everytime I go back home to WNY, I make sure to make a stop! I used to live right by the original one.
I love their cheese section and bakery. When I was little, my mom would give me our can deposit money and I'd spend it in the bulk candy section.

We are moving closer to Wegmans and I am happy about it! I'll try to give a short list:
-Good beer selection
-Delicious bakery treats
-Awesome catering- we got everything for my son's Baptism and first birthday parties and it was easy to order, easy to pick up and very good food. The catering manager went above and beyond in helping us plan, I mean this is a grocery store not the place I had my wedding.

@BKCaribBaby: in case you needed a little more convincing that Wegmans is the bees knees.

Two words: Fresh Produce!!!!!
I find the produce at trader joe's is not fresh, and both DH and I got sick off of one of their many recalled salads from there. Whole foods has such a limited selection. Wegman's has the better quality meats and produce, but is cheaper than whole foods since it's still an actual grocery store. I like that it's large, and I have space to shop. It's better than the tiny aisles I'm used to in the city (first world problem I know!) We are finally getting one next month!!
pomegranate / 3872 posts
Basically everything everyone else mentioned - but my absolute favorite thing is the wegmans app! You can make your lists and it tells u every aisle location and you can look up recipes on the app and automatically add all the ingredients to your list. It keeps track of all your purchases so you can quickly add your usually purchased items. It really helps me meal plan and I barely forget things anymore because I just add to the list whenever I realize I need something. The customer service there is also top-notch.
ETA :lo literally loves it there. The stores are really nicely designed and there are tons of things for her to look at ie; murals, fountains, a train, etc.
