DH and I are having a hard time coming up with boys names. I don't like a lot of the "trendy" names right now. I like these two names because I feel like they're a little unusual without being crazy. We'll probably have James as the middle name. What do you think?

I feel like with both of them, he would have to repeat and spell them every time he meets someone. Like, hi I'm merrick. Oh, nice to meet you Derrick. So for me that would be a no go. Sorry.

Agree they sorta sound made up. Merrick is a town in Long Island and that's what it makes me think of.
Similar to Rylan, my mom has a cousin named Ryne. A little old school but kinda different.

Merrick actually makes me think of the Elephant man (real name Joseph Merrick). Sorry!

@hotchildinthecity: that's what I thought of too! the city. There are a lot of super popular city names though; Brooklyn, Charlotte, Addison, Alexandria, Sydney, Hudson... etc etc.. So I wouldn't discount it for that fact..
I like Merrick but not the other one.

I liked Merrick partly because its the name of DH's favorite surf board maker - Al Merrick. I didn't know there were any cities with that name.

LO's buddy is named Rylan (boy) and we've met a Rylan (girl) too! I like Merrick as well. Surfing connotation over here in So Cal!

Merrick is not the type of name I would choose, but it's nice. I dislike Rylan.

I like them both but wouldn't use them myself if that makes sense. I know a Rylan...his name never caused any confusion or anything. I don't see anything wrong with either name

They both sound too close to Derrick and Ryan to me (which I think are great names). If you don't like trendy names, go with something more classic!

Not a fan of Rylan - I'd just go with Ryan to be honest.
Merrick is a popular radio host here in Australia that I HATE - seriously he's so annoying - so I think I hate it by association, though objectively I don't mind the name at all.

They're not my style, but I think they both have enough in common with more traditional names (Eric, Ryan) to not cause too much confusion/double takes.
Merrick is a brand of dog food, though. It's not a super big company, so it's not like naming your son Alpo, but it's better that you know about that association before you choose the name, I think.

I'm not a huge fan of either one. They seem like they're trying to hard to be different, which to me is the trendy thing to do. But I also don't hate either one. They're just ok. Sorry. Boys are the best though! Congrats!

I like Marek. I had a good friend growing up with that name, I think his family was Czech. Rylan I don't like as much.

I like Rylan but I don't think it's a name that grows up well. I can picture a 7 year old Rylan, but not a 27 year old Rylan...

@Foodnerd81: I was thinking the same thing. Rylan would be called Ryan and Merrick would be called Derek. Alllllll the time.
And honestly, to me it seems like you took a standard name and just added or changed a letter to be unique. I'm sorry!

I know a Marek - he's Polish. I don't mind it as a name, especially 'anglicized' to Merrick. I'm not a fan of Rylan.

I like Merrick, but I have to admit that when I read it my first thought was the brand of premium dog and cat food that shares the name.

@lady baltimore: I thought maybe I'd heard of a dog food by that name. Otherwise, I don't mind it; I like the surfboard connection.
Rylan is the name of a home developer near me, so all I can picture is the Rylan Homes fliers in my mailbox. Otherwise it's okay.

Both names make me think of girl more than boy. Maybe because I only know of one Merrick and it's a woman. And Rylan sounds more feminine to me?
