Merrick reminds me of a dog food brand. A good one though!
Rylan would be my choice of the two. I have a friend whose son's name is Ryland and I like it.

I used to babysit a little girl named Merrick. She had a sister named Rowan. I don't mind it. I used to think of her name as masculine.
Im not a fan of Rylan though. It seems like one of those trendy "let me mash two names together and make a NEW name" kind of names.

I don't mind Rylan (I actually know a Rylan James) but not a fan of Merrick. I think he would be constantly saying "it's Derrick with an M"

I'm with @sapphire. They both sound too close to Derrick and Ryan to me (which I agree I think are great names).

Merrick was a name we liked if we were having a boy but we found out its a girl. We know a Rylan so that sounds pretty normal to me so I think both are good!
