Meryl (for a girl... apparently per babynames.com it's unisex?)
I'm not pregnant, I just saw a girl on the Today Show in her 20's named Meryl. I think it's a beautiful name.
Is it too connected with Meryl Streep to be usable? Is it gorgeous and rare enough to become a hit?
Our DD's name is 2 family names so we'll likely do that with any other DD we may have, so this is off the table for us- but would love to hear what others think! It's at the top of the "names I LOVE but can't use" list, haha!

@Anagram: that's a great way to put it! I wonder as Meryl gets older and maybe stops working more, if the name will pick up. Since I just referred to Meryl Streep as simply Meryl without thinking about it, I think that any DD's born now with that name will get that mentioned (to their parents) but I doubt their peers will know who she is while they're growing up.

I think it's a name that grows up well. I can picture an adult with it more than I can a baby.

@looch: I agree . . . I have a hard time picturing a baby girl or a young girl as a *Meryl*, but as she gets older, it seems to be more and more fitting.

I have a friend named Merrill and I never connected it to Meryl Streep. I have always thought it was a lovely and unique-but-classic name.

I just saw that on the Today show too! The figure skater? I like it! Merrill a lot more than Meryl.

@Littlebit: yes! I didn't see how she spelled it though. PS- was it just me wondering if Meryl/Charlie ever explored dating?!?!? Like you're both attractive and skate together... you had to have considered it.

We have a pretty firm (well, to me) girl's name though that is made up of family names too- we shall see if we have another girl!

I know a Meryl my age (so early 30s) and I never thought it was too much like Meryl Streep. I think it's a lovely name, though it isn't totally my style. I think it goes along well with the overall trend of older, great-grandmother names that are popular right now. (My LO falls into that trend-- her name peaked in 1880).

I had a friend growing up named Meryl and I always thought it was a super cool name. I don't like Merrill though because I work in Financial Services and it would make me think of Merrill Lynch.

@kjpugs: LOL! I hear you! I didn't think so while watching clips of them skating - I wasn't down with the hair...but once they showed them sitting down and talking I definitely changed my tune!

I really like it. I really love all the classics. Although I think it is associated with Meryl Streep - I like her and she isn't someone that I would hate for a daughter to be associated with.

@Mrs. Pen: I don't consider Meryl a classic name . . . ? I think it's a variation on Muriel, which I would put more in the classic category.

It's a nice name, but depends on what last name you would pair it with. I also prefer the Meryl spelling because Merrill Lynch comes to mind with the other spelling.
