Lana
It was my grandmother's name and I loved it on her. But I always thought it was too "old" - I never hear it anymore, but it's grown on me and I really think it's beautiful.
Would you use it?
(laah-nuh - like Lana Del Ray)

I like it as a nickname but would want a longer name behind it.

it's pretty, although at first, i would have pronounced it lay-na. not sure why!

My friends daughter is named Lana. I like it. Makes me think of Lana Turner.

I know a woman named Lana, who pronounces it so it rhymes with banana. I like it, although it seems nicknamey to me.

@Synchronicity: that's how my grandmother's name was pronounced as well.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
It's a pretty name. My name is one letter different and it gets mispronounced all the time.

It's a very common Russian name (short for Svetlana) so I hear it a lot.
persimmon / 1196 posts
I think of it sounding like the ending of Svetlana (not rhyming with banana - well, unless you're British, I guess).
I like it! I think it fits in well with Lyla, Clara, Tess, etc., and is totally ready for a comeback like those names.

It reminds me of Mandy Moore's character in The Princess Diaries. I think that was her name anyway! Regardless, I like it.

I like it, but I wouldn't know whether to say LAH-Nuh or LAY-nuh (like Dana).

I like it and had a student named this a few years ago.

I like it for a woman, but I have a hard time imagining a baby named Lana. Is that weird of me? It just sounds so... womanly.

@Foodnerd81: actually neither of those pronunciations. It's like Anna with an L.
@mamimami: haha I actually though the same thing- probably because it was my grandmothers name! But babies grow fast
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Mrs. Pen: ahh yeah I definitely would have mospronounced it.
grapefruit / 4455 posts
It's just ok. But I associate it with a particular person. (30s)

Am I the only one who watches Archer? Lana is a fairly logical nickname for the name we're planning for LO, and DH is always talking about how he's gonna do one bit from the show yelling for Lana.

Pronounced as Lah-Nah is nice, pronounced as Lay-Nah not so much - it means cow-poop in macedonian.
pomegranate / 3231 posts
I have always heard that as a nickname for the Russian name Svetlana.

We really like it. It was the first name we both could agree on.
Some similar names that I like but were shot down by the DH is Lara, Laina.

I know someone with this name. I like it when it is pronounced correctly.
My mom's name has a different first letter and gets mispronounced all the time. I just don't think people ever hear her name so they just assume it's an entirely different name than it is.
pomelo / 5678 posts
I'm not sure how to.pronounce it.
Lane-a
Lan-a (like land)
Lahn-a (like Donna)

I know both a Lana my age (short for Svetlana) and a Lana who is one (short for Alanna), pronounced the way you like it. I also know an adult whose name is spelled the same way (and isn't a nickname for anything), but it is pronounced to rhyme with "Anna" (Anne-a, not like the frozen princess)
I like it - I do think you'll get asked a lot what it is short for though!

@dolphin: Me, too. That's the what I pronounced it in my head. I like it in that pronunciation. Not crazy about the other 2.

@Mrs. Pen: I have a friend who named their daughter Lana. They pronounce it Lawn-ah. Is there a character in a superman series named Lana? I think that's where they got it from. Her husband is a huge fan!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@littlebug: how does she pronounce it? Never seen small ville.
@PinkElephant: yes, like Anna with an L. That's how my grandmothers name was pronounced. I knew an Alana in high school but her name was pronounced ah-lahn-ah
@Greentea: Anna with an L

love it so much. my inclination is to say it like lana (del rey) lah-nah
the whole pronunciation thing doesn't bother me though. we have a graeme so we get gray-me and graim instead of gray-em/graham all the time.
