R seems to be getting it more now. Right now she has a really bad patch right above her butt crack and her cheeks (face not butt).
What lotion? Body wash?

Ahhhhhh! I posted something similar the other day and was gonna ask again (I've been on Dr Google all morning) but now I'll just follow this!
Everyone swears by aquaphor but it's a greasy mess.

We switched soaps and went with Dove for both body and hair. We also moisturize with Cetaphil moisturizing cream daily.

Owen has it pretty bad, patches all over his body. I took him to the ped and they said to use hydrocortisone but it hasn't helped at all. Plus I hate slathering that all over his poor skin. We switched soaps, used cetaphil and aquaphor and nothing has really helped. I'm starting to wonder if he has an allergy?

Mustella or Burt's bees wash and aquaphor or Burt's bees lotion. Always very liberal with lotion!

@petunia354: I am wondering that too........but I would think you would see a reaction otherwise.......
@winniebee: Aquaphor makes a lotion?

Hydrocortisone, but it doesn't seem to be working as well lately - Jack's is getting worse and worse too.

Aveeno Eczema here too. It's great and a decent price.

Wash with soap only a few times a week instead of at every bath. Lotion immediately after bath time and twice a day. We use vanicream as suggested by LO's allergist. It isn't greasy like Aquaphor and very thick. It can be found in drug stores and on Amazon as well. We treat bad eczema spots with prescription steroid cream.

We hardly ever use soap (except shampoo) and when we do it's CA Baby super sensitive wash.
CeraVe lotion, Shea Moisture lotion and I have a tube of Wedela exema cream for babies that I use on her face.
We also have an Rx, but don't have to use it that often.

For daily use and maintenance, we use CeraVe moisturizing cream (not the lotion).
When they get a bad flareup, we have a Rx for steroid cream, but really don't need to use that often.
The CeraVe is amazing at managing it. Since we've started using it, they haven't had a bad flareup at all.

@Smurfette: no the gel stuff. It's very moisturizing.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
I should add that for whatever reason aveeno eczema products were not great for us.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@Smurfette: yeah at night before bed I just slather that on and it really helps! And use lotion in the morning and at diaper changes

I haven't started using it yet, but a friend gave us a bunch of samples of the Arbonne baby line. She swears by it for her LO.

@winniebee: ok, I will try that tonight. We don't put lotion on her in the mornings or day. I never even thought about it. I will do that this weekend.
And Aveeno makes me break out so I don't want to try it with R.

Vaseline per derms recommendation and steroid cream when it was really bad.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
We had a steroid cream for when it was really bad (around age 1). He did grow out of it around 16 months but we live in the desert so still battle dry skin.

@Smurfette: you can put 1% hydrocortisone on the rough patches without a prescription.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Ash: We do that when she gets a bad patch already. I just want to control it more so it doesn't get super bad.

@Smurfette: We use the German version of there products for our bath and lotion:
http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/Baby-Derma-White-Mallow-Body-Lotion.aspx
http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/calendula-cream-bath.aspx
Its expensive but helps prevent the eczema... For the actual eczema we use something with ceramide but the product itself is not available in the US.
I just make sure it is something without artificial colour, synthetic perfume and preservatives

After a warm bath don't totally dry them off and put Vaseline on the eczema - then put on cotton fitted pjs - this was the only way we could control DS's eczema - he grew out of it by 3.5 thank goodness and hasn't had it since!!

DS has really severe eczema. Cetaphil had helped us more than anything, rx or not. We slather it on a few times daily and I send to daycare.

Oatmeal baths work wonders on my dry flaky skin. I had a friend that has eczema recommend it to me.
Fill up the bath with warm water. Put about a cup of regular plain oatmeal in a cutoff foot of pantyhose and tie an knot in the end. Your little one can play with it in the water and squeeze it to release the "oatmeal milk" it makes the water cloudy. I also use it to rub on my arms and legs. It gets slimy after a while but rinses off easily. Works a lot better than many lotions I've tried.

DD had pretty bad eczema for the first year of her life starting around 3 months and here was my routine to help minimize irritation:
- No soaps/body wash and bath in lukewarm water only. If you have to soap the butt, do it at the very end and remove baby from bath to avoid soap exposure to eczema patches.
- Pour 1/2 cup of old fashions rolled oats in a clean sock, tie a knot, and use that to bath. Try squeezing the oatmeal "juice" onto the bad patches - it helps with the irritation.
- Bath only every other day, if possible.
- Slather on cream as soon as possible and when skin is still damp. I didn't bother toweling off DD but just wrapped a towel around her to bring her to her changing mat then lube her up! We love CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (packaged in a round tub) and Aquaphor to seal it all in for bad patches.
- Make sure to reapply cream at least 3 times a day.
- Stick with cotton clothing for breathability.
I hope this helps!

@yoursilverlining: where do you get the wedela eczema cream? i haven't seen it around!
pomegranate / 3983 posts
We've been using eucerin after the bath and throughout the day although we are pretty sure it is triggered by food allergy. One that we've definitely identified is soy but we are still working on finding out other triggers.

@littleveesmommy: My DD is battling a horrible eczema flare up but it really looks like hives, not sure though?! The pediatrician confirmed it being eczema and prescribed fluticasone cream. Thanks for these tips, will definitely try it!

@Kimberlybee: So sorry about your DD's eczema - it is such a pain in the derrière to deal with! I truly hate eczema with a passion but with a combo of all those tips hopefully it will keep the major flare ups at bay. Let me know if it works and if you figure out any other tricks. My younger DD now has eczema too. Blah!
ETA: if the flare up is bad, using a thin coat of hydrocortisone sealed with Aquaphor 2x a day for 2-3 days max helped reset my daughter. Eczema is a violent cycle of the itch and scratch, and the hydrocortisone can help break that cycle. It's usually my last resort if nothing else works and the spot just won't go away.
