Gong-Gong (we aren't even Chinese but my dad travels to China a lot for work and loves the name!) and Dhs dad is Grandpa

Opa like @LovelyPlum (it's German for Grandpa, DH is Papa)
@Katrocap: @looch: we're in Germany and I have never ever heard a LO call their grandpa "Großvater". It's the right term (= grandfather) but it's like you'd say "father" and not "dad"

My dad is grandpa and my FIL is Pops (my nephews had already designated that one before M was born).

@lil owl: I dunno, my husband is Swiss, and this is what he called his grandfathers. My MIL is Grossi, instead of GrossMutter.

@looch: hmm, I don't know, maybe it's different in switzerland. I just never heard it around here.
DH just told me it could be a regional thing. Relatives in Berlin would use Großvati instead. (I never knew that)

@lil owl: Of course it is different in Switzerland...they treat High German like a second language!
Do Germans/Austrians use Opa/Oma?

@lil owl: So I asked my husband....what he said is the following:
it's more used in germany or to distinguish between the grand parents on the father's and on the mother's side
but most people don't use oma/opa.

@LovelyPlum: strangely, they call another grandma Oma (step-MIL's mom, who is actually from Germany). They call my step-dad Opa, and my mom is Mimsy

FIL is Grampy and and my dad is Grandpa. My mom had a ton of trouble deciding what she wanted to be called. At first she wanted to be Mimi and I vetoed that because it sounds too close to mommy. She ended up with Grammy, which I still think is weird because I feel like Grammy and Grampy should go together, but Grampy is my FIL, lol.

@looch: @lil owl: super interesting! Regardless, I'm glad we found it-it suits him well!
@getjazzy: also didn't know it was Dutch!
@erinpye: cute!

@ShootingStar: haha growing up I had mismatched grandparent name pairs (Nana and Grampy, Gram and Papa) but it was all I knew, so it wasn't strange to me.

@LovelyPlum: Haha, neither did I. Maybe it's not officially? My FIL is from Holland and my DH called his grandpa Opa (and grandma Oma) so it must be? I don't know any Dutch though, we just let FIL pick what he wanted to be called when his first grandbaby was born.

Gumpy and Poppy.
My dad was going to be grandpa but DD1 started calling him gumpy and he turned into a big ole puddle on the floor, so the name is staying. It really is ridiculously cute.
FIL was going to be papa but it has turned into poppy, which is also very cute, so that's staying too!

I love when kids come up with their own names. We do call my dad "Papa" and my FIL "Grandpa". But my mom has gotten some of the best names based on what her grandkids could say. Some call her "Lodalo", others call her "Meema", and my DS calls her "Myna".

@LovelyPlum: @getjazzy: I have a set of Dutch grandparents and a set of German grandparents. Both of them are Oma and Opa.
My dad is Opa and DH's dad is Grandpa.
