For two children/siblings to be "close in age," how many months or years apart do they have to be? What is your personal interpretation of the phrase?

I'd say 3 years or less? Mine will be 2y9m, which I consider fairly close, though not as close as 2 under 2, obviously. I feel like once you get to 4 years apart it's not really "close" any more.

less than 2 yrs
my kids are 2.5 yrs apart and I don't think they are close in age

Around 2 years or less. I feel like once there's two grades or more between them, they aren't really close in age.
Of course, as an adult, 30 and 35 are pretty close in age. But 5 and 10? Not so much.

I would say less than 18-20 months apart. Between 20-30m apart is still close but not scary close.

When can express it in months in common usage, that's close in age to me.

Mine are VERY close in age at just over a year apart. But I would say close is anything under a year and a half apart.
My 2nd and 3rd will be 24 months apart and it doesn't seem very close after having the much closer gap.

Under 2.5 years, I think. Mine will be 3 years 2 months apart and I don't think of them as being too close or too far apart.

18 months or less? I live in the Midwest and 2 year age difference seems super common, so I guess I don't see that as that close together.

I think three years or less. My family typically space kids out by a lot though, so three years seems close to me.

When I say I'd like my kids to be "close in age," I mean 2 years or less.

Not more than two years (give or take a few months).
DD1 and DD2 are 22 months apart and I consider them close, although I certainly know people who have smaller age gaps.
DD2 and DD3 will be 2.5 years apart - I know that in reality, that age difference isn't too different, but it FEELS a lot bigger (perhaps because as a second child, I think DD2 acts a lot older than 26 months).

@Adira: my youngest two are 12.5 months apart but will be two years apart at school because of the cutoff.

@oliviaoblivia: That's so weird!!!
But what I meant by "two grades or more between them" was that they'd be at least three or more grades apart, so literally two grades between their grades. Like second grade and fifth grade have two grades (third and fourth) between them. Sorry if my wording was confusing!

Hmmm, my girls are almost 3 years apart, but will only be 2 grade levels apart. I don't consider them to be super close in age, but being only 2 grade levels apart makes them seem close.

About 2 years.
@Adira: The cutoffs can really change things. LO1 & LO2 will only be 8 months closer in age than LO2 & LO3 and yet, my first two will only be one year apart and the second two will be three years apart in school. So like 5th grade, 4th grade, and 1st grade at the same time. So funny how that works out!

@skipra: Good point about the cut-offs. And that's so bizarre how it's affecting your family!!

I agree with @Adira:, so where they are in high school together. My brother and I are 2 5 years apart and 3 grades. So when I was a senior he was a freshman. That always felt close to me.

To me, it's under 3 years. My middle brother is 2.5 years younger than I am, and I always felt like we were close in age.

24 months apart because well it can easily be stated in months.

I'd say 2.5 years/30 months apart. That still seems really close to me given that 18 months is the ideal minimum recommended time between pregnancies. LOs less 30 months apart would mean starting to TTC right at 18 months and successfully conceiving within the first couple cycles.
