I struggle with fruits in the winter for LO that are from the produce aisle. I usually go to oranges and bananas because everything else is shipped in from "Mexico" or are exorbitantly $$$.
What fresh & Local fruit options are there around you?

I should pay attention but I just buy whatever they sell at Costco!

@autumnlove: I would think you would have a ton of options locally?
I'm not above buying "mexico" if it's a lot cheaper but around this time of year the quality is crap.

I live in New England and we can get local apples through out the winter assuming it's been a good year for the crop. I can the apples from our personal trees for applesauce and can our pears in cinnamon. I also froze nectarines, plums, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb, cherries and cranberries while they were available locally for pick your own. I mostly bake with those, but don't mind eating thawed nectarines and strawberries. They are mushy but still tasty, and frozen blueberries are like candy For my son, he eats a smoothy made with some combination of those daily. That's mostly how we get our fruit in, in the winter.

@locavore_mama: Kind of funny and random, but I totally looked into shipping the citrus from our back yard the other day to friends in another state, and then randomly thought of you. If I were allowed to do it, I was going to see if you wanted some shipped to you, too. But nope, not allowed.
And we have quite a few options here in FL, especially since it's been such a warm fall and winter. No freezes yet and even summer crops are still going. I'm amazed at how often our grocery stores will carry citrus from California at this time of year, though.

This time of year, we gorge on citrus until we're sick of it I love winter produce, even if it's not local. Clementines, grapefruits, oranges, BLOOD ORANGES (yum, yum, yum), pineapple. pomegranates...it's a good time of year to eat citrus!
Come March, though, I'll be dying for some fresh, local fruit!

We usually eat local oranges and clementines. And aren't avocados winter fruit too? Usually our Costco carries local fruit so we get it there. We also eat apples year round and the ones we get from Costco are usually from Washington.

@locavore_mama: Ha Ha. Well I just submitted a question to USPS.com and should get a definite answer within 24 hrs. My information came from word of mouth, so they could be wrong. I'll let you know.

@BananaPancakes: I bought a crate of Florida direct oranges the one year through a co-worker's daughter's band fundraiser. Best. Oranges. EVER.

We eat a lot of citrus. Also frozen berries. I know it doesn't help you now, but maybe this coming summer you could buy extra local berries and freeze for the winter months?

@Mae: yea, I totally planned on doing that this year but time escaped me. LOL The year prior I canned a ton of peaches and apple(sauce). It was so nice to have local fruit in the winter! They're just so much sweeter too.

We are eating satsumas off my mom's tree.. She has hundreds.
Apples, pears, bananas.. Pretty much it (I don't think those are even local).

We're in the northwest and do a lot of citrus, apples, bananas and some pears throughout the winter.
Also, it's not fresh, but I stock up on organic frozen berries when they're on sale for my breakfasts.
