I had a hard time finding stories of women who this happened to and especially after the surgery. This is really long but I hope it helps someone someday who might be going through the same thing. My OBGYN said she has seen it 1 time in residency and one case in practice since.

I had my Mirena put in at 11 weeks postpartum. There was a significant cramping associated but went away in an hour or two. It was a Tuesday. That Friday I had a lot of pain so I called the OB's office. They are only open a few hours on Fridays so I had to wait until the next Friday to be seen as I went back to work on that Monday and didn't want to take time off right away.

At this point the pain was intermittent but sharp when I did feel it. When I went back in to have it checked, the midwife (same one as inserted it) could not find the strings.

I went back a few days later for an ultrasound. The tech could not see it after looking for 20 minutes. Then I got sent for an X-ray and it was floating in my pelvis. The midwife called me back to tell me that it had perforated my uterus and I would have to have surgery.

Given that I had an emergency C-section three months ago, I was not thrilled to say the least. I had a pre-op consultation with my doctor and she explained that she would do a exploratory laparoscopy. She also recommended switching birth control methods to the pill or Nuvaring since I didn't want anything to do with an implant. I chose the pill.

I had my surgery yesterday and it went really well. The anticipation was the worst part and actually I had more pain from the failed IV (nurse blew the vein the first attempt so a doctor who happened to be standing there did the successful one).

The surgery lasted 75 minutes or so and in total we were at the hospital about 6 hours. I would have been discharged sooner but my blood pressure was low from dehydration so they kept me on the IV for a long time to push more fluids.

My doctor promised to clean up any scar tissue from my C-section while she was in there but after the surgery told my husband there was not any. She recommended I take a week off work because of the gas that was pumped into me causes discomfort and burping as it leaves.

I'm about 24 hours out from surgery and feeling really well. The pain is manageable and mostly I am tired. It was uncomfortable during the night when my medicine wore off but a quick pill swallow later and I went back to sleep. DH and my inlaws are doing all the kid care and chores for the next few days.
