Does it mean sitting without assistance from a person/prop? Or does it have to be that the baby can sit without supporting him/herself (so tripod sitting would not count as sitting unassisted)?

I think of it they can sit up with the support of something, like the bumbo. You can sit them on the floor and they don't fall over.

I would even include tripod sitting if they are good and stable.

I think of it as sitting up alone with absolutely no help from anything or anyone.
I personally didn't consider tripod sitting unassisted. I think my LO was around 7 months old when she was able to sit up by herself, without using anything for support.

I always thought it was sitting up without using hands or a prop (so tripod doesn't count).

I consider it sitting up without needing a prop, be it hands, Bumbo, Boppy, anything else, so I wouldn't personally consider tripod as sitting unassisted. More specifically, I consider it being able to sit up straight with no support. E was 6.5 months old when he could sit up straight without any support (and, fun side fact, that same day he crawled for the first time!)

I didn't think tripod counted- personally I thought of that as one milestone, and sitting unassisted (no props including arms) as another.
@lovehoneybee: C started sitting this week-- I'm hoping we have another month or two before crawling!!

I think of those as two separate milestones too: sitting with support of hands (not a boppy or pillow, but tripod sitting) and then sitting unsupported--sitting on your bum just like anyone else would.

@Foodnerd81: He also pulled up and started cruising for the first time on the same day. Kid was just impatient to go-go-go!

@Foodnerd81: Go C! M has mastered tripod sitting, but she can only sit without her hands down for a few seconds before she starts tipping. I can tell how badly she wants to be able to sit and shove toys in her mouth at the same time, though!

The ladies on here are probably right- with the support of absolutely nothing. Dd couldn't REALLY do this for long until right when she turned eight months and started crawling the same day.
Edit- actually it was the day before she turned eight months.... She suddenly crawled a few "steps" and then within the week she was going from on her tummy to sitting on her own. She could balance a little while at six months or so.

@lawbee11: she went from tripod but still tipping after a minute, to full on sitting all my herself in like, 3 days! It's so weird to see her sitting like a big girl! It is great for shoving toys in mouth.

I also think sitting without holding on to/balancing on anything. My LO never really did tripod sitting, and didn't master sitting unassisted til 6.5/7 months.
