Is a baby soothed better with motion or something? Is arm rocking exhausting and a rocker/ glider gives mom or dad a break?
What's your take? Is a bed/daybed or regular comfy chair a decent substitute for a glider/ rocker?

When LO was very small, I think the rocking/gliding motion was comforting to her. But she doesn't need it at all now...I just like it because now I exclusively pump and it's a comfortable place for me to do that (we only have a low couch that is not comfortable AT ALL for pumping since you have to lean back so much).
I know some people use it for a long time, but one of the very few sleep-related things we did "right" was offer the least amount of motion possible to get her to sleep. So no aggressive bouncing or rocking or swaying or anything. Just the light gliding in the chair the first couple of months, then just holding and no rocking, and now nothing--just laying her in the crib.

i LOVED my glider. i rocked, nursed, read stories in it for 4 years. i was kind of sad when we recently sold it because we didn't have the space for it in our new apartment.
babies love to be rocked and you can just rock easily in a glider. during the bad months of sleep, i pretty much slept in it all night!

Any cushy chair is fine -
We bought a lazy boy leather recliner when I was 8 months pregnant - I slept in that a lot the last 2 months of pregnancy. Then it went in the baby's room for night nursing.
Now its down stairs in the living room
I say buy something you can use later

LO was soothed by the rocking motion. Arm rocking would have been exhausting. I still cradle him, rock in the glider, and sing a few songs before I lay him down for the night and he's 20 months.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: our baby isn't here yet, but like @Mamaof2: I wanted a comfy chair where I can rock baby but it will also be used later. We got a lazy boy recliner a few months ago and it's soooo comfy. We added the rocker base to it.

I never used it a lot in the baby stages but I enjoy reading to my toddler in the glider....but any comfy chair will do!

We have a plain, but very comfortable, wooden rocking chair in our nursery. My DD never liked/needed to be rocked, but I really like having a rocking chair because it allows *me* to lean back and relax while nursing. I would not have wanted to use a bed unless you were planning to exclusively nurse lying down (which I also would not recommend) - it's too cushy and deep.

Babies definitely need motion, it's a huge help and yes it does get exhausting for the parent. We survived without a glider in the nursery, but we had a wooden rocking chair, a recliner in the living room that rocked, a bouncy yoga ball (LO still loves to be bounced), and a baby swing. We paced and swayed and swung him in the car seat a lot in the early days!

I don't know, I never considered it and just bought a recliner for the nursery.

R loved the rocking motion. Many times I had to rock back and forth in our bed, and it would take longer to get her to sleep cause I was too lazy to get up.

I didn't think I needed one at for LO so I didn't buy one when she was born...then at Christmas time, I had the opportunity to nurse in my moms glider & fell in love so I purchased one & it should be delivered today! as far as rocking goes, I doubt she will like it for that...she's almost 4 months now & can't tell when I'm standing versus sitting & she prefers to be rocked to sleep while I'm standing but I'm sure it will be the perfect cuddly spot for us to nurse, read books & enjoy each other

No kids yet, but my nieces were always soothed in one. Plus, they are a comfy spot to sit.

@cmomma17: I never thought of a yoga ball! We're going to try that next nap

we didn't have space for one and LO never cared about motion/being rocked (which is not all babies, but I know many people who never had anything like this). we already had a loveseat that we put in the nursery so we use that for reading time. otherwise I just held/nursed her wherever when she was a baby.

For me, the rocking chair was crucial for nursing. I have a gorgeous wood rocking chair and the arms are the perfect height and width that I can rest my boppy on them and have Xander lay on the boppy and nurse. It's perfect!

The glider was just easier to rock the baby for me. It was comfy spot in his room that was quiet and away from the noise from the rest of the house so he could settle down easier. The hubby always has football or some show going on with the TV and it distracts DS.
I plan on using the rocker as a place to read books to DS when he's a bit older also.
It's also great of those MOTN feedings since DS sleeps in his own room and there's not a bed in there for me.

For nursing I just wanted a stationery chair with tight /good back support...

Just a big cushy reclining chair was my only requirement. We have a giant Lazy Boy rocking recliner that worked great! Plus we use it for normal life since we don't have nursery space.

We didn't have one, as they're not really available in Europe.
My only advice is not to get your kid hooked on motion, it's a very difficult habit to break.

I HATED the idea of a traditional glider before baby. Now, I couldn't live without it. It's my daughter's and my special place to cuddle.

YES get one. A glider looks more like a recliner so you might get more use out of it. Babies enjoy being rocked.

I love my glider! It's not very stylish but has served it's purpose well, I have sat in it with my LO's multiple times a day (and night!) for over 3 years now. My toddler will even sit in it and rock by himself when he is upset/tired even though it's in his little brother's room.

Didn't get one and didn't miss it! My mom, however, had a cow every time she came over and insisted on rocking her body back and forth in an armchair which made her look a bit strange.

I could not imagine not having our glider. It's our nursing chair, our snuggling chair, our reading chair. It soothes him to glide even now as a toddler!

I'm so glad we bought a glider-recliner! It's the most comfy spot for nursing, and I've ended up sleeping in it for at least part of pretty much every night so far (DD is one month). I guess if we didn't have that option, we'd have figured something else out, but so far it's been a lifesaver. We got ours from Best Chairs and it's sized a bit smaller than a traditional recliner because it's meant for nursery use. I love, love, love it.

My LO also likes the rocking motion and when she's having trouble sleeping, we snuggle in it and I rock her. I ended up pumping exclusively so at first I was kind of bummed we bought a glider but I used it to feed her bottles and we now use it every night for bedtime stories. I vote get a glider/rocker!

I didn't have one for the first 7 months and I was fine. I nursed in my bed or on the couch. However, we lived in a small space then. We do have a chair in DS's room right now but I don't know that a glider is necessary.
However, yes, a yoga ball is key. I don't think rocking would have helped him but I bounced him like crazy to calm him down a lot.

@Mrs. Sunshine: it was life changing! We got one for the grandparents house too! You can bounce but you can also sway side to side or front to back. Gives your legs a break!

Ah, it's so good for back support, especially in the early days. We relied on our glider to give our backs relief, since we also used the yoga balls a lot. Baby likes it too

We're at 10 months and I'm meh on the glider. My parents wanted to buy it for us and I insisted we do Craigslist because of the $$ - they're everywhere on Craigslist and the house we bought from looked super clean.
I prefer nursing on our couch recliner (I don't like the reclined position on the glider for nursing at all). For soothing LO preferred bouncing or walking to rocking as a newborn. DH loves the glider as do my parents. Maybe I'll like it more as LO replaces nursing with reading for bedtime.
