Not how many kids do you actually want, but how many would you be able to handle if you HAD to have more than one?
I watched the movie Cheaper by the Dozen and I don't think I would be able to handle that! Honestly I think my max is probably 3 kids.

3 is my max. If our first two are the same gender we will consider a third but I would definitely not try again for a 4th.

My max is 3 kids, but I could probably handle 6 sanely, 12 kids I would be in the nuthouse.

I think 3 is our max.
Honestly I could probably handle 5, but I don't know how we'd fit them all in our little house, and we're not planning on moving. (Not to mention the cost of raising that many children!)

I think I could handle 4, if there was a decent gap between the first two and the last two. In reality I think we want to have two.

I'd be fine with 3 or 4. Believe it or anything over that gets easier!

that would depend on how old i was for the first! if i was starting at 22, then a lot more than i could if our first doesn't arrive until 30! i've done a nanny share where half the days i had 5 kids, one of which was a colicky baby, so i know i CAN handle a bunch of kids of different ages, but i don't know that i want to. i mean if we had $$ for help so evenings where i was trying to help older ones with homework someone could hold a fussy baby, that would also make a big difference! DH's grandma had 13... i have no desire to do that! she also started as a teenager and raised them in africa so it was a much different situation than where i'm at. i'm gonna say my limit would be 6, starting now & if i had someone around with me in the evenings, whether DH or someone else to help.

Right now, I feel like 2 is my max. I wanted 3 and I don't think I can do it.

3 or 4. I was a teacher before having our daughter so large numbers of kids don't scare me but knowing I can't send them home at 3:00 means i wouldn't want more than 4. Ok, maybe 5.

We have 2 now, 8 & 8 months, and I seem to be doing okay... I think I could do 4 maybe 5.

3-4. I think we are going To end up with 1 or 2 depending on how long it takes us. I grew up with 3 sisters and I loved a bug a family.

2 and no more. Now that I have one, I constantly stare at the moms I see out in public with more than two in awe. I have no idea how it's done.

I think I could do up to 8. I've run gymnastics and other classes with 8 or so. It would be possible. Not 8 all the same age of course.

@mrbee: With a partner. This has nothing to do with finances/space. Just hypothetical.. if I handed you 10 kids and said "here, they are yours for a month" would you be able to handle it?

As long as they were all normal kids of different ages (no special needs, etc.), I could probably handle a classroom full. I wouldn't *want* to tackle more than six, though!

3 is my max, but I think I could physically handle four (depending on age gaps!)

I think I have become pretty good at multitasking and handling multiple children. If it wasn't up to space or finances I think I could handle more than the four That I have. I don't know maybe between 6-8. My husband would disagree though. I think the thought of a fifth makes him sick to his stomach.

If we're going by the Cheaper by the Dozen scenario, I could do that. Thing is they aren't all the same age. By the time you have 12 kids the oldest one is a teenager already and I would sooooooo be expecting the older ones to help with the little ones. If they're all the same age, I'm going to say 4 - although that's stretching it.

2 comfortably, but I could probably handle 3. No more than that though. My bro and SIL have 5, and I'm in awe/terrified at the thought, lol.
