There are lots of young families and dogs. There are always kids playing outside and people out walking the dogs. It's pretty artsy fartsy too.

We live in Little Italy, about 5 mins from downtown Chicago. NOT granola-y, eco-anything, or hipster. We love that we are SUPER close to downtown, but Little Italy is bit more charming with tree-lined streets and great restaurants within walking distance. We are a few blocks from a large University and then the hospital district a few blocks in the other direction (about 3 - 4 hospitals in the same area), so we have an interesting mix of college students, families, and then medical professionals.

But if you walk one to two block south of us, you are in sketchy neighborhoods with some housing projects...

Retired? lol. I live in Florida, it's a decent mix. There's an engaged couple renting next door to us, a woman living with and caring for her elderly mother next to them, an older couple (retired? not sure) on the corner, etc. We only know a couple of our neighbors and not very well. But we see people out walking dogs all the time, and one younger girl in particular. We just moved here in April.

Our neighborhood is in the middle of a turnover. All of the houses were built at the same time in 1966/67 and the original owners are moving out (or passing away) now so young newly marrieds and couples with kids are moving in. It's called a "desirable" neighborhood on real estate listings, so I think it'll be a great place to raise our kids.

Ours is builder grade. All of the houses look about the same, all of the yards are decently taken care of. There is only 9 other houses on my street, my neighborhood is a cultasack (how do you spell that?!?) next to the bigger version of our neighborhood, and over there it is all young military families.

Old people, but family-friendly. We are in a development built in the late 70's-early 80's but we're on a cul-de-sac so it's very quiet. We are the youngest people on the block, and at least 2 of our neighbors on the street winter somewhere warm in their RV's. Oh, and we have a hoarder who lives 3 doors down. Lovely.

Now the vibe on the other side of our development is a bit younger - more families, etc...

@Rachel: the hoarder isn't that old - 50s, maybe? And has definitely hoarded since at least the 80's The families stick in this neighborhood - our friend up the street used to run around with the hoarder's now-grown son. The house was DISGUSTING then, he says, and can only be worse now.

Our neighborhood is family-focused (elementary school right next to our culdesac) with some a few retirees or late 50s folks as well. We're in a college town but on the opposite side of the city from the university, so it's a mix of hipsters, professors, young families, commuters, and business types in our community.

Lots of walkers, runners, bikers, strollers, etc as we live right next to the walk/bike trails.

We're about to find out Moving in a few weeks to a university town about an hour away from where we currently live (which is conservative, suburban, and pretty boring). We'll be moving to a development where there seems to be a mix of old and young and we're hoping that we get to know our neighbors a bit more than we currently do.

Quiet! Serene ... the kind that can only be achieved with a lot of senior citizens! You often see tourists hanging around during summer. It's hard to miss them with their cameras. There's lunch cruises on old wooden boats that cruise people around and they dock here. It's a tiny little "village", so there's not much to see but it's very picturesque.

Most of my neighbors are retired and have lived here all their lives but as homes are being sold, new younger families are moving in. Lakes, forests, a nature preserve next to the elementary school and I just found out there's a baby clinic in town, I love it even more now!

We live in a neighborhood filled with all ages of people. It's not our ideal neighborhood as hubby bought this house 10 years before we even met. Our next one will ideally be on a cul-de-sac with parents and kids about the same age of us.

Lots of baby boomers! It was built in the 90s and everyone has kids ranging from around our age (with the first grandkids) to just leaving high school. What I liked was that the school is adjacent to our house so I can actually see into the schoolyard, and there's a very active outdoor lifestyle and lots of green space/trees.

I wish there were more (make that any) young families, and I think they live in the neighborhoods nearby.

Mostly families. I'm not sure about class status. I guess I feel like the people who don't keep up with their houses or yards are trashy and I would put them in lower middle class just because of that. All of our houses were built within the past 6 years. Some have gone to forclosure, some are very well maintained. The neighbors are mostly (98%) families or young couples.

We have a mix of old run down homes and new homes, we're in a newer one. There are older people, younger families with kids, and younger families. We're renting so this won't be somewhere we stay that long.

My perfect neighborhood is not a neighborhood but a country home.

Mostly young families with one or two young children, and some older couples who have probably been in the neighborhood for decades. It's very laid back and feels very "friendly" and low key. It also feels very "historical"--lots of old brownstones and restored buildings.

Very diverse, lots of young families or new houseowners. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves, not a lot of interaction among each other which makes me sad!
