I'm not a fan of CL in my area!

I haven't sold much that required the person coming into the house but I'd be a little scared too. I'm also am afraid of picking up stuff at other peoples homes too. I'd much rather meet them at a public location. This is kind of why stuff is piling up in our house now.

CL is huge in San Francisco. You use it for pretty much everything. I would go alone to a public place (Starbucks/target) for baby stuff and DH has gone in people's houses for furniture before - although I wouldn't. We've also sold our furniture and had people come in but DH is always home. I have never felt scared/unsafe.

I must be a weirdo because it's not something I ever really think about. I dunno, it doesn't creep me out at all. I remember in college how my roommate freaked the f*ck out about all the people that had to come over to set up our utilities, to the point that she but our knife set in her room "just in case." I don't get it, at all.

We use gumtree here, which I think is similar but doesn't have anywhere near as dodgy of a reputation. We've bought and sold loads on gumtree and have never had an issue. Honestly, I've never even thought of the safety component and have let loads of people in the house when I'm home alone with DD to pick stuff up. When we buy stuff, DH always goes with me solely for lifting purposes and I suppose safety but we've never really thought about it. It's just such a common thing to do here amongst all social classes that I've never worried about being in danger.

I think this is an Australia thing - things that I don't ever worry about in terms of safety here are things I would never dream of doing in the States. I don't know if it's a false sense of security but I'm just not worried about my safety here!

I've had people come into my house on several occasions from CL, and I've gone to other peoples' houses to buy things. I always research the crap out of them Catfish-style (google their name, number, put their email into FB, etc) before I go/give out my address. I also don't give out my address until DH is home, and I'd never let someone come get something if I was home alone. I once went to someone's house to buy a sofa by myself, and although that worked out fine (and from my Catfish research I knew he was a middle school math teacher from the next town over) I wouldn't do that again.

@Mrs. Bee: CL spam is so annoying! A couple of years ago someone tried to scam me by sending too much money in the form of bogus certified checks and asked me to send them the difference. I took them to the post office and they confirmed the checks were fake.

I've used it many times to sell (or give away) items. They've all been large items, so the person has had to come to my house. I don't feel weird about it at all and have yet to have an issue. Everyone has been very nice. My husband hates it, but he thinks everyone he doesn't know is a rapist-murderer or scam artist.

I voted on all of them except the last one. Haha! It all depends on the person/what I'm buying, though. I've had people in my house dragging furniture out, I've been through people's houses and I've bought and sold stuff out of garages and in public places.

In NYC craigslist sketches me out. But when we lived in DC, I found all of my apartments (2 sublets rented by private individuals and 1 from a big apartment complex), and we also sold stuff through it where the buyer came to our apt.

I've stopped CL for our local Facebook buy/sell/trade. You have to be invited by another member, so it's a little more "secure" to me than FB. But even then, I make sure DH will be home when smoeone picsk something up or we meet in a public place (like my work parking lot.)

Pretty good. I've bought and sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist with no issues. I've never let someone in to my home (or gone in to anyone's home) but we have let people in to our office (we were selling old office furniture). Everyone who came were perfectly normal, friendly people.

I usually do public but I have picked up things from good neighborhoods. I bought an activity gym from a house nearby. It was in the entryway of his house and i stood in the doorway. I let DH know if i'm getting something and he doesn't hear from me in 30 min

@Mae: I usually google the person to make sure they are legit but I don't like craigs in general and for a different reason. I always feel like I have to buy once I get there and you can't return when you find out it is broken.

One time we let someone inside to sell a large item and a couple of other times, we've put things in the garage for them too see. I prefer to meet somewhere public. Although, we just had a local story of guy who met someone out in public to sell something and he got robbed. eeek.

@MsLipGloss: As long as nobody is tied up in your basement, I'm not worried

@Mae: yeah, getting murdered is definitely not what I want to happen. I guess if I get robbed, it's not a big deal. I'll hand over whatever they want. What's crazy is the people took off and ended up in a high speed chase with the police and one of the guys got shot by the police. I hope whatever electronic device they stole was worth all of that. lol
