I grew up and currently live on well over 100 acres. I'd define a lot of land as 200+ acres. Most of the people I grew up with had at least 100 acres of land. I know there are huge differences depending on area, so how do you define a lot of land??

@Beyond2: haha I would define yours as a "$hit load of land!" I would say anywhere in the ball park of 75-100 acre is a lot of land!

We - current urban dwellers - are looking at suburban/rural properties that have 2-3 acres and I think *that* is a lot.
watermelon / 14206 posts
That's a lot! We're currently looking for "a lot of land" to buy, but we're thinking 5 acres or more, lol.

@locavore_mama: agree 100+ equals "a shit load of land" haha.
I grew up with 8 acres and I think that is a lot! I would call 20-75 "a lot of land."

@Beyond2: whoa! I'm with @locavore_mama: , that's a $hit load of land!
I think a half acre is a big lot, an acre a really big lot. I don't know anyone, without a farm or an enormous estate, with more than two acres.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Beyond2: haha what do you do with all that land? My cousin in law has 92 acres but they have a farm!

We live in a suburban area now but where we used to live (where DH grew up) that's pretty similar. His family had thousands of acres but have sold a lot and now have about 300 acres. I wish it were an area we could live and send J to school but there aren't school options

5+ is a lot to me! I grew up on six and my grandparents have hundreds because they have a farm. Our house is on 1/3 of an acre. We'd like 2 acres next time we buy.
eggplant / 11287 posts
I think ten plus.
I grew up on five. It was big, but didn't seem HUGE

@Beyond2: I grew up much the same way as you. We were happy to find .5 acre in our urban neighborhood, but we would both like more. Luckily, my parents still have quite a bit that we can enjoy when we go visit.
@locavore_mama: My parents use it for hunting, growing timber, an investment, etc. it has lots of uses!

@septca: That is a lot!!! At least I think so.
I live in a big city, so I think anything over 1 acre is a lot.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I think a home only with land would be 2+, I think for farming 100+ is a lot.

When you live in suburbia, even 22 acres seems like a lot of land. My in-laws have that much. I'd love to have that much some day! But 100 acres sounds fun though!!!

I think this is relative to housing conditions. As a city/ suburban girl half an acre is a large lot. So, if someone has more than that near me I'd say that was a lot. Our realtor wanted to ahow us a house on 1.5 acres in an area known for keeping horses. We don't have horses and didn't know what we'd do with all that space. We passed on even looking at the house.
persimmon / 1379 posts
I think that if you have a lot that is more then 25 ft wide, you have lots of land. LOTS.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
I think over 20 acres is considered agricultural and requires a different type of loan.
Personally anything over 2-3 acres would be too much for me. We live on about 1 acre.
eggplant / 11408 posts
My parents have 4 acres behind their house, and I really like that space. It's just woods, and I wouldn't consider it "a lot," but it's nice and spacious.
For a residential neighborhood, 10?
eggplant / 11824 posts
As a city gal and someone who hates yard upkeep, I think of more than half an acre as a lot, and more than I would want.

I've never lived on a lot of land, so I can only go off of the movies. So I vote for "if you can't see the house from the start of the driveway" ala Batman Begins.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
Wow, all of these seem like a lot of land to this urban-dweller! I grew up in a small town, much smaller than the major cities I've lived in as an adult, but my parents' lot is less than 1/4 acre, though we lived next to a 15 acre public park/elementary school so I never felt like we were lacking space. My in-laws' lot is like 1 acre and seems huge to me!

Must be the country/farm girl in me, and the fact that I live in CO and we farm...but my parents built a house in the middle of 160 acres. And I live on the edge of another 140 acres. We farm over 30,000 acres. Smallest field is 80 acres (and a pain because it's so small), largest is 960+ acres. Here anything over 35 acres is considered "agriculture" and does have a different type loan. My husband and I are looking at buying 320 acres to build our house on and farm around it.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
Or minimum is 10 acres. My wish would be at least 50, and I would consider that "a lot." I grew up on 10.
pomelo / 5220 posts
My parents have 44 acres in CO and I always thought that was a huge lot compared to our suburban MD 1/2 acre lot.... Now, I don't even have grass/a yard. We do have 1 city tree though.
clementine / 899 posts
Well grew up in agriculture and the largest someone owned and actively farmed was around 10,000 acres. For just a family farm, I think that's huge.
pomegranate / 3658 posts
Hoooly shit, yeah, I would probably refer to anything more than 1/2 acre as "a lot of land."
pomegranate / 3580 posts
It depends, just for day-to-day living I'd say 5+, but if it's land out in the country for recreation (e.g. family cabin) I'd say 100+.
persimmon / 1128 posts
@PawPrints: Same. From a city gal perspective, anything involving multiple acres here is really unheard of.
pomegranate / 3729 posts
Woah. We are hoping to get a house around here with what is considered a lot of land in the town we are thinking of: it's about an acre an a quarter! I grew up on 3/4 acre which was bigger than most of the lots in our neighborhood.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
We have 180 acres. Its not a TON of land where we are. We have neighbours who co-own 10000+ acres.
pomelo / 5258 posts
5 or 6 acres. My family has 11 acres in an area that has become almost suburban. It seems like more than a lot to me. I don't know the size of anything bigger.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
10+
But if I were talking to a farm friend, or someone in the country, 150+ or so.
coffee bean / 47 posts
@Beyond2: Sorry I just saw this again....It is pretty awesome. We are closing in on being a Centennial farm....2019 will be the Centennial year. I live 1 mile from where I grew up and live in my grandparents old house.
persimmon / 1171 posts
I have almost half an acre and I thought I was cool (:
My grandma has 16 acres and I think of her as rich. When my mom talked about how they used to have 100 acres I think she's lying. No one has THAT many...well, I was wrong.
What do you do with so many acres?
My grandma said she would give us an acre if we moved to Ky, I couldn't leave CA though. I'll live vicariously through you guys (:
