@mrbee: that would be terrifying! not being able to see anyone- what if you fall in the driveway on the ice, no one would see you & you be out there for hours, probably dying of hypothermia. being so far from people scares me! last christmas eve we were in the middle of nowhere at my uncle's lake house, driving there i was commenting on how long it would take emergency vehicles to get there if something went wrong and how scary that was.... my uncle fell & cracked his skull open that night and we waited FOREVER for paramedics to get there. i LOVE living one block from a fire station! too much land is isolating, but batman probably likes that.
@Treytonsmom2011: how far is the closest hospital?? does that make you nervous? can you see other people from your house?

@mrs. bird: The closest hospital is 20-25 minutes away. We don't have to worry about traffic making it longer so it's not a huge deal. I went into labor at 1:30 in the morning with my son and we left our house at a little after 2:30 and were there and checked in by 3:00am. I grew up out here so it doesn't bother me much at all. My closest neighbor is across the road/and to the east about 1/8th of a mile. Closest to the west is 1/2 mile. But I can see plenty of houses from my house. I have lived in town with neighbors "on top of me" and while I liked the convenience of being so close to the store and stuff, I HATED living in town. Had we still been living in town when I was pregnant I could actually see the hospital from my house. But to be honest, we have better Fire Department response time out here than we did living in town....out here is all local volunteers so they can be here within 5-10 minutes. In town we lived a few miles from the closest station and it would still take them 10+min to get to our house. All the volunteers know where everyone lives so they just drive straight to the emergency--no arguing with the 911 dispatcher on where to go.
We've had a few emergencies out here and ALWAYS the volunteer departments are on scene long before any other emergency personnel. The only bad thing, is because we live in such a rural area, police response time is really slow, and dispatchers are in town and tend to argue with/not listen to where they need to send cops/etc....
