Or doesn't even nap at all? My almost 1 year old has been taking less than 1 hour naps and every time I hear her whine I get an "ugh" feeling. I know it sounds terrible but she's only 1 and needs more than a 30 minute nap a day! I try leaving her in hopes that she will fall back asleep but she usually just whines off and on for 45 minutes which is stressful, and not one bit relaxing.
What is your typical reaction when your LO wakes up very early from a nap, or refuses to nap at all?

If she misses a nap I usually take her out somewhere. I know she is going to be cranky and I need to keep her up until her next nap and she is generally happier out and about so we jut go walk around target or something. If she wakes up early from a nap we just continue on with our day. Or if she wakes up really cranky same as above... go out somewhere.
It's a bummer but not really much to be done about it it seems..

i usually cry a little inside. then i usually wait about 15 minutes to see if he settles down. sometimes it happens, usually not (so why i keep hoping i don't know). other times i go in and say it's still time to sleep, try to get some rest and leave, and wait about 15 minutes. again, this has limited success.
lately, my 2-year old has been skipping naps at home on the weekends (still takes nice long naps at daycare, dammit). he cries for a bit, then is quiet for a while--unfortunately he's not sleeping but just messing around in his room. after about 45 minutes we get him out.
it makes me sad.

haha. I'm exactly like @hilsy85 and @blackbird! I hate it. Not much I can do though. I read about nap extensions when LO was a newborn but that never, ever worked for me! And now I have no control at all. Oh well. A very very large reason that I detest baby sleep. I can't wait till baby sleep doesn't faze me at all!

Sadly, my 2 year old rarely naps anymore, so even if she takes a 30 minute nap I am ecstatic.

@NovBaby1112: oh yeah my 2 year old hasn't napped in almost a year. Unless she's sick of course. But now my youngest is barely napping. Not ok!

If she wakes up early I generally roll my eyes, sigh and take a minute to prepare for the rest of the day. if a nap is completely skipped I will probably cry and then do my best to make it a fun afternoon But i usually am close to checking out by 5 and she's losing it at that point. So I probably cry again while I cook dinner lol

Oh goodness, I intervened, big time. I was a prisoner of my son's naps most days for the first 2 years of his life.

My exact reaction is the biggest most exasperated sigh! If it has been really short like half an hour I will try to nurse, rock, or lie down with him. Otherwise I give up.

"Nope nope nope nope nope." Usually I can get a good 15-20 minutes more out of her where she will just play quietly with her baby, but sometimes she is UP.

Same as all the other moms - €#%$&?!!!!! But since their nap is the only time I get to myself I will leave them in there to play until the two hours is up, unless he/she is hysterical crying.

@looch: I always intervene! DD is the queen of 2-part naps. I just completely weaned her this weekend so I no longer have my main tool to get her back to sleep. Today, she woke up after 27 minutes. I rocked her for 15 and she was up and screaming when I tried to put her in her crib. So I gave in and brought her to my bed and let her sleep on me while I read and got another 1hr15 out of her!

I nurse him back to sleep, which almost always works. Sometimes I get stuck in bed with him, though.

(that happens about 40 million times a day. he only naps for 36 minutes at a time and has been like that since he was 2 weeks old)

I handed him to DH after this afternoon's nap failure and told them to go drive somewhere. Anywhere. LO decided 1 nap this morning was good enough and we are both losing it.

UGH SERIOUSLY?! is what I used to say out loud or think during DS' infant cat nap phase. He was a chronic 40 min napper for a while.
Now, I'm just like eh, what were our plans? and get to it faster!

"NOOOOOO!!!". Seriously, with a 4 month old who is still waking frequently at night, my toddler taking a short nap is completely out of the question.
