I don't like MOST far out trendy names or ordinary names with unique spellings...like Brandyn instead of Brandon, etc.
BTW- My LO 2 has a unique spelling of a common name..haha!

Ordinary names with unique spellings are my pet peeve, and super trendy names.

not a fan of.... creatively.... spelled names. but to each their own, i know a lot of people aren't a fan of my favorite boy name, but i love it, so whatever works for you.

Unnecessary Ys and Ks (eg Kaytlyn instead of Caitlin) kill me! Yoonik spellings, as it were

@autumnlove: same, or really weird words that shouldn't be names. Like I know a guy named cord ......
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
All of the *elective* Zs and Ys drive me crazy, as do the *creative* spellings.
Parents get to name their kids, sure . . . it shouldn't be used as an opportunity for *creative expression* for the parent(s)!

Same as you...the unique spellings drive me nuts. I also don't like names that sound made up.

When I worked at a daycare there was this boy named Eoughan (Owen), I could never spell his name right! That drives me crazy.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
The unique spellings, definitely. Though I'm not as anti-y as the rest of you, haha. For example, I prefer Kathryn over Katherine...

@MrsKoala: DITTO!
I also don't like trendy, or unique name choices in general. some are cute, but it takes a while to get used to!
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
Yeah, anything that tries too hard to be unique. You may not want your kid to have the same name as someone else but Kaytee and Katie will still be pronounced the same way.
I always think of a scene from L.A. Story when Sarah Jessica Parker's character is telling Steve Martin her name. She introduces herself as Sandy, and he answers that it's such a relief to meet someone in LA that doesn't have a weird name. She then proceeds to spell her name: "big S, small A, small N, big D, small E, big E, with a little star at the end"... (SanDeE*)
And really out there names. Not my style at all!

I'm also not a fan of names that could maybe be cute on little kids, but do not work for grown ups. I won't get super specific, but a lot of people I went to high school with have named their kids things like "Bitsy Jo" and it makes me crazy.

Just leaving this here as it was posted on ONTD last night: http://mommyslittlesunshine.blogspot.com/2012/01/29-weeks.html The amount of crazy spellings is nuts. Keeping in mind that the mom's name is McKinli.

@yellowbird: There was someone in my grad school named Cord. He's now forty something. It worked for him. One name I'm not fond of is "Vance."

@cascademom: /facepalm That child will have a huge battle to be taken seriously as a professional . . . . her name will be a barrier to certain colleges, employers, etc. . . .

@MsLipGloss: Big, big struggle. The little girl's older half brother is named Titan. No joke.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@cascademom: I like how she has a line about how to pronounce it underneath. Just a sign of what the kid is in for the rest of her life! And god, the other names she was considering? Geez...

@Bao: that poor child will forever be correcting people and spelling his name for something so traditional
I'd never read that and pronounce it Owen...
I dislike odd spellings and boys names on girls/ girls names on boys.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@grizz: this! Our top criteria for names are:
1. Could you run for president with this name?
2. Could you be king/queen of England with this name?
3. Are the initials not horrible?
4. Is it relatively "sixth grade proof"? (no excessive teasing)
There are a lot of names I like, but I wouldn't use them, because I worry about what kind of barriers they might present in the future.
Then again, there are so many variations of names now that I wonder what will be considered "respectable" in 50 years, for example. But I'd rather not risk it.

@LovelyPlum: I think the Gaelic for Owen is Eoghan or Eoin . . .
coconut / 8861 posts
@lovehoneybee: Yeah on ONTD, they went through the pronunciation too. I ended looking through her blogs in total amazement of everything about that family.
@lawbee11: Seriously. Here, I was worried about giving LO a name that doesn't really get a nickname.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@MsLipGloss: fair, I probably could have looked it up. I was trying to give the parents the benefit of the doubt, but alas
I don't mind names with crazy spellings that have legit ethnic origins, though they could be a pain at first. One of my all-time favorite girl's names is Maeve, but I love the traditional spellings, Medb/ Maebh / Medba/ Meadhbh/ Méadhbh. I'd be tempted to use Meadhbh, but I don't know if I could ever pull the trigger.
papaya / 10343 posts
Well, obviously youneek spellings!
But I also don't like (not that there is anything wrong with them, just not my preference):
-"new trendy" names. I.e. I don't consider Sophia or William "trendy" even though they are uber popular because it was a common name for decades. But I don't like the popular names like Madison/Addison(for girls)/Aiden/Hayden/Jayden/etc… you get the point.
-nature names. Willow, Lily, Star, etc. Nothing wrong with them, just not a fan.
- *most* virtue names. I like Grace and I don't mind Hope or Faith, but I dislike Chastity, Prudence, Destiny, Constance, Justice, etc.

@cascademom: There's a family pic listing all their names (edited list): Hadli, Whitni (sister), Will (brother), Matti (sister), Devan, Titan, Me, Laikynn. ETA: Her name is McKinli so they clearly love the "i" names!
coconut / 8861 posts
@LindsayInNY: (Facepalm). Those spellings hurt my eyes. What's so wrong with it being McKinley or Whitney. Both names are lovely looking when spelling correctly.
persimmon / 1363 posts
I hate uniquely spelled names, but the ones I hate most are the ones with not one, but two xs. Like it's bad enough to replace a "ck" with an "x" ("Jaxon") but when you go with the "xx" ("Jaxxon") I can't even.
I also don't like, and this is a personal preference but isn't like objectively awful, when people name their kids a nickname or short name of a name - like "Sam" instead of "Samuel" or "Matt" instead of "Matthew".
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@LovelyPlum: Even with legit origins, I wouldn't give my LO a name that would always be mispronounced or really difficult to spell. 'Cause I know several folks with *legit* difficult spellings and yoonique names, and they all hate them with a capital H. A few are still pissed at their parents to this day about their names!
eggplant / 11408 posts
@MsLipGloss: I can see that still being a pain, I get it. I guess my point was that it doesn't bother me quite as much as names that are spelled differently just for the sake of being different, if that makes sense? I would hate for my kids to hate me over their names, though!
pear / 1998 posts
I'm not a fan of -den boys' names. (Aiden, Brayden, Cayden, and the various spellings). Actually, now that I think of it, I don't like many names than end in n.
I also don't like when parents deliberately name their child something with the intent of always going by their middle name. I get that there are many reasons why parents do it, it's just not my cup of tea.
papaya / 10473 posts
@cascademom: That list hurt my eyes. I guess I can just be glad the kid isn't named Taylee?
pomelo / 5000 posts
I messed up pronouncing a former student's name as Leah. It's spelled Le-ah, but you're supposed to pronounce the -, so her name is lah-dash-ah. I dislike that.
