ew! I don't even like it when girls wear skirts and tops (not a dress) to a wedding! Of course there are really dressy outfits that are fine in lieu of a dress (like a silk top and pencil skirt, with nice jewelry and heels) but honestly, if it's casual enough to wear to work, I don't think it's dressy enough for a wedding.

Maybe I'm a snob. But I think a wedding is a special occasion, especially when someone is paying mucho $$$ to treat you to dinner and dancing and all that.

edited to add: I'm speaking of evening weddings with a dinner reception... not more casual weddings.

I'm pro-dressing up for weddings. Last year I attended a wedding when I was 37 weeks pregnant and couldn't fit into my dress so I called the bride and asked her if it was okay if I wore dress pants - I felt terrible for wearing pants!

I don't care if the wedding is held in a parking lot, no one should be wearing jeans!

I have a friend who married into an extremely wealthy family. When her Father-in-law got re-married, those who rsvp'd to the wedding were given a pre-paid credit card in advance and instructed as to the dress code. (new outfits were on him!). It was a ritzy wedding and they ensured everyone dressed appropriately. I thought it was genius. Unfortunately, the rest of us non-millionaires will always have to deal with one or two guests who dress badly!

@Jumpingjacks: woah - that is impressive. and a little nuts! if i had the money for that i think that would have been awesome - esp. for people to pay for hotels & airfare.... but alas, not a multi-millionaire.

Wow! You should always dress up for a wedding! And never wear a white dress!

I have been complaining to my DH at every wedding we have been too. If you attend the ceremony you better be in at least slacks for a man, and slacks/dress for a woman.

"Club wear" should never be worn to a wedding, nothing drives me more nuts than girls in hoochie dresses in a church/formal setting. I have seen jeans at receptions, and I usually give this a buy if they only attend the part, even though I don't like it. And WHITE sundresses, not the right occasion!

I think that sometimes people don't think. It blows my mind sometimes when I see what people wear to a wedding. My SMIL wore flip flops and my FIL wore Dockers with a polo style shirt - untucked. We had an evening wedding.

You shouldn't rewear your own wedding dress to someone else's wedding. Yes, this happened at my wedding. It was a more casual dress since they had had a courthouse wedding, but it was still a long white dress. Oh, excuse me, she said it was ivory so it was ok.. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

ugh. Agreed! Jeans, shorts or tshirts! I had a relative show up with a vneck tshirt and jeans! It was a "what the heck?" but we laughed it off.

I don't think white or red dresses should be worn either!

I definitely agree, no white dresses! I was at a wedding once where there were guys in jeans. But then groom changed out of his tux and into black jeans after the ceremony, so I guess it was ok with the couple. If it had been my wedding, I would have been pissed.

DH's cousin wore jeans and flip flops to our wedding. Then she got trashed. Luckily she didn't make as scene.

I went to a friend's wedding in somewhat rural Iowa and knew it was going to be interesting when as we were pulling into the country club for the ceremony/reception, the car in front of us threw a beer bottle out the window. There were quite a few people dressed like they were going to a backyard bbq.

Um so I haven't read through everyone's comments but I'm going to bet no one can beat what one girl wore to MY WEDDING! At the time I could care less but a bunch of my friendsade a big deal about it. Oh and did I mention I had never met the girl before in my life? She came with my uncle and was a friend of my cousin or some bologna anyways she wore...

I went to a wedding a few years ago and there was a group of people who showed up late wearing jeans & tshirts AND were drinking beers! It was the craziest thing I've ever seen!

White is my only rule. Although, in my culture it's a tradition for the mother of the bride to wear white, too. My mom wore off-white to my sister's wedding.

I did wear a short skirt and a polo to my sister's wedding. She told me not to worry about dressing up so I didn't. The wedding entire was casual. I did feel under dressed. Although, there was one guest who wore torn up jeans to the wedding so I wasn't the worst one.

Ugh jeans. To this day I'm still bitter towards a cousin who sent her kids to my wedding in jeans. These kids for sure have way nicer clothes than that.
