How do you figure out what to get people that have everything? And can afford to buy whatever they want? And they have no hobbies?

This is my dad. He doesn't want a lot of stuff, but when he does want something, he just buys it. Impossible!

@MamaMoose: Hubs is this way too . . . he always tells me exactly what he wants for a gift. Most of my independent tries have not been entirely successful.

@MsLipGloss: Hahaha PapaMoose does the same thing. I like to try to surprise him though!! He gets really frustrated with me though because I like to be surprised but he would much prefer that I just tell him exactly what to buy me for my bday and xmas each year. I don't know why he gets so stressed... he always comes up with great ideas on his own!

@MsLipGloss: I feel bad buying the IL's just wine.....
@MamaMoose: DH is the same.....and I get stuck trying to come up with stuff to tell my family to get him.

@Smurfette: What about wine and photos? I bet they would love a whole bunch of your LO!

@Smurfette: Oh, and I would much rather have someone give me wine than a million scarves (that I never wear), or earrings that *look like me!*--AS IF--that I will never wear, or any of the 10 throws that I don't want in my house (a throw with cats on it is good for a laugh, but how do you come to my house and see our furnishings and think that I would want that?!)

@MsLipGloss: We are going to give them a framed pic of R from the ones we just took. I just want something to go with it. I know they have a spare room full of stuff people have given them over the years, that they don't do anything with.

@MsLipGloss: I know you secretly sleep with that throw every single night.

@Smurfette: Shhhhh! *stompsfoot* That was a seekret DAMMMIT.
*snort*

@Smurfette: @MsLipGloss: you two crack me up!
What about a box of something they can drink/eat? Chocolates, tea, coffee, cookies?

@Smurfette: But seriously, for the past 5 years, MIL has given me no fewer than 2 scarves (one year I actually got *4*), 1 throw (as many as 2), and now fewer than 2 pairs of earrings . . . which are always so fug! : / Last year, in addition to the scarves (2 of them), she got me *4* sweaters because I mentioned to hubs that I needed a few cardis for work (because my suit jackets were still too small). Every single sweater was either fug OR so shapeless and boxy that I just wanted to light them on fire and dance around them. She has known me now for 7 years, and I don't do baggy/boxy! EVER (so unflattering!).

@sunny: I see how much of that stuff they get and then try and get us to take. Last year their friends gave them this big meat package from a local butcher and we took it all home cause they didn't want it.

@Smurfette: my inlaws are the same. I hate shopping for them. Luckily, they like eat and they love lo, so we take then out to nice places for the holidays and shower them with wine, chocolate & flowers. And they just love being around lo.

@TurtleDoves: They live out of town, and we will only be there for a day and half (they aren't going to be happy when realize this) but that does give me an idea. I could get a gift certificate for a local restaurant, some wine, and do a date night basket.

@MsLipGloss: That is the gifts they give me. Other then the Pandora beads, everything sits in my jewelry box or I take to Goodwill. One year I got a D&B handbag, it was nice, just not my style. I tried to return it but it was over half price then, so I just gave to my Mom.

Experiences/ Activities even if they are cheap like movie tickets or museum passes. You may have to go with them, but that could be fun right?

I also vote for experiences. I got my parents tickets to the symphony one year and they really enjoyed it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: They live 4 hours away, and that is a blessing in disguise.

I had this problem with my grandparents. I bought a gift for the angel tree at the mall (or my church) and then wrapped a picture of the gift along with a note explaining that I made the donation in honor of them. They loved it.
I also made donations to a charity which did a similar thing overseas. The first year I bought chickens, the second year a goat; they joked that I was buying them a petting zoo piece by piece.

@Smurfette: Yep, I end up donating a lot too . . . or let my cats enjoy them (I mean hello, it's a *cat* throw!) . . . *augh* To be perfectly honest, I wish we only did dinner as a big family, and that just DH, LO, and myself would do gifts. It's just overkill--the amount of stuff MIL buys--and I end up donating or throwing out pretty much everything!

How about a gift card for dinner?
Also, check Groupon/Living Social and see if they have any sort of "experience" gifts like a wine tasting or a night at a bed and breakfast if you want to get fancy.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime:
@MsLipGloss: I know. I would much rather just spend more on my parents who appreciate stuff and ask for things they actually need/want, cause they can't afford it. IL's go SO overboard with the nephews, so I know they will do the same with R. I don't know where in our house all the gifts are going to go.
