Newborns will typically need between 8-10 diapers a day.

Will you be breastfeeding or formula feeding? For FF, you'll need to think about bottles, cleaning/sterilization, refrigeration of formula. To clean, you'll likely want a clean plastic basin to wash everything in, instead of in the hotel sink.

I didn't find that we needed to change our baby's clothes that often--definitely not 3 times a day. But I guess it depends on whether or not your baby's diaper leaks or he/she spits up a lot.

@Eieio: here's what I would take

- a footed sleeper per 24 hours (so 10?)
- a side-snap/kimono-style undershirt per 24 hours (10?). I HATED trying to put anything over his head when he was that tiny. Not till 4/5 weeks!
- a few pacifiers (3)
- 8-10 diapers per day (note: newborn diapers don't always fit if the baby is born bigger. So maybe a small pack of each and buy more of the size you need there.
LOTS of wipes. Newborn poop is very runny so we used like 5 per change!
- boppy (whether you BF or FF it's great. Also for lounging baby while you change or something)
- minimum 5 bottles (even if you plan to BF you never know how that will go so you def want to be prepared for moment of desperation. I learned that the hard way when we didn't have formula at 3am and BF/pumping just wasn't working)
- a can of formula and gallon of distilled water (or buy as soon as you arrive)
- a travel bottle cleaning kit (Oxo tot makes a great one we still use for cleaning sippy cups on vacation. Brought it to Israel with us right now! It's a little kit that has a bottle brush and also unfolds to be a drying rack for bottles and parts)
- if you will have a microwave in the hotel, the medela or dr Browns microwave steam sterilizer bags are great. Reusable and very small to pack.
- a manual breast pump and bags to store milk. You may make more than you can feed baby. Or may need to pump for comfort.
- lots of burp cloths (I think cloth diapers work best for this). Good for BF, burping, placing under chin during feed, etc. I'd take 10-15.
*side note - whether or not you will be able to do laundry may change quantities that you need. If you can do or send out laundry you can get away with less.
- a&d ointment as barrier for changing and if needed for cord stump
- gauze for cord stump (again I think this varies depending on Doctor. We were told to put a big glob of ointment on gauze and place it on the cord with diaper change)
- white noise machine (they make travel ones) or download on iPad or something you don't mind not using.
- summer infant swaddle pods or similar. Swaddling saved us! I'd take 5.
- I would buy a rock n play and just leave it there or donate when done. It's $60 and worth it for even just 10 days. Or if you're driving back home take it with you.
- socks (for feet and hands. A pair every other day probably fine)
- 5 or so blankets (a&a or similar). Great for laying down in bed to change them, put under them for sleep (we had a spitter who dirtied every sheet he slept on), covering stroller or car seat, laying over them when napping on you, etc. Really multipurpose.
- disposable nursing pads
- disposable pads for changing. Messes happen. Again during almost every change we had a big spit up. So having something under him we could just toss instead of wash was valuable)
- a few washcloths or use hotels. If you're having a boy we used them to cover his penis during diaper changes. Oh yes, it happens a lot
- lots of comfy clothes for you. 2 per day.
- beanie hats if you think you'll take baby outside. 1 should be fine.
- if you do pump, the medela wipes for pump parts are fantastic. Wipe the parts after each use and refrigerate the parts for 24 hours between washing/sterilizing.
- we relied a lot on gas drops and gripe water in the early days. He was super fussy.
- nightlight for middle of the night feeds and changes. You don't want to fully turn on lights/lamps because it fully wakes them and confuses day and night. But you need to see Munchkin makes a cute little owl one that is a very soft light and turns off after a few mins.

If I think of more I'll come back and add.
Some of these may seem like they aren't necessities to some...everyone is different! But for me, these are things I don't think I could be without.

I'd bring a few things to help organize, like a pop up hamper, maybe an over the door shoe bag thing to stash things, a cheapie dish drying rack. There's never enough room on the bathroom counters in hotel rooms!

And pack what you can in packing cubes.

@Eieio: They changed mine, seriousy. I used to have a mess of stuff in suitcases, but now, I can pack well in advance and just load the cubes. Plus, at the destination, I can just remove a cube and put it in a drawer. Easy Peasy. I can't believe I waited as long as I did.

@Eieio: I would ask the hospital for the tiny little syringes to collect milk if you want to pump or hand express. I felt that there were less precious drops wasted since one tiny drop would come out and I could collect it with the syringe.

A nursing pillow was essential with my first LO to help with positioning but I've found it less useful now that I know what I'm doing with LO2.

@Eieio: not exactly. I would pump or hand express, and when I saw a drop come out I would stop the pump, then take apart the flange and connector and then use the syringe to suck up the drop on the nipple or on the flange. Yes, it was tedious!

In the first 2-3 days I had so little (under 1 ml, then 1-5 ml at a time) that I felt that any drops left in the bottle or flange were wasted!!!

I would focus on postpartum supplies and snacks and water and comfy clothes for you. But I'm sort of a minimalist on newborn gear. For baby I would pack
10 sleepers
10 kimono shirts or onesies
10 socks
as many Aden and Anais blankets as I had
2 or 3 swaddleme or miracle blankets unless you're a good swaddle with A&As
10 burp cloths
Triple paste
Gas drops
A boppy
2 pacifiers
1 box of ready to feed formula nursettes just in case (comes with nipples)
Maybe my breastmilk pump (I needed it for one baby but not the other in the first weeks)
Wipes
150 diapers
A Rock and Play or boppy lounger would be a plus

The good news is all babies do for the first ten days is nurse and doze and stare, puzzled, at the world, so you don't need anything to amuse baby with besides yourself. But you will be recovering, so you will need giant pads and witch hazel and ibuprofen and vitamins, etc. And to breastfeed successfully you need way, way more water than you think you need and lots of snacks!

A baby carrier might be helpful. Good if you need to walk around to soothe baby and even though newborns are so teeny, they really do wear out your shoulders and arms. They're also nice to use when you have baby check ups, travel or are in another situation where you don't want a bunch of people touching and getting too close to your new little one. A ring sling can be really cozy with a newborn and there are some great you tube tutorials online. Soft structured carriers are also fabulous but my newborn was too little the first few weeks, even with an infant insert.

You might want to pack some plastic bags for wrapping poop diapers in. Arm and hammer makes some that have baking soda in them to help keep the smell locked in. A few extra trash bags or grocery bags would be good too. Some hotels will keep a spare roll of trash bags in the bin under the bag in use but not all do. Maybe I'm weird, but I'd want to bag up my pads too rather than see them in the bathroom trash in between room service visits. A few gallon size ziplock sate useful too. Leftovers from takeout/delivery can be stored, dirty laundry that you don't want to touch other things, etc.

Maybe your own TP? Even nice hotels seem to use scratchy TP and immediately post partum I wanted only the softest of the soft TP.

Snacks. Kind bars, instant oatmeal packets, snickers or a payday bar, trail mix, something nutrient dense and easy to eat. Breastfeeding made me very hungry and it took me a while to learn to snack on things that would help me keep my blood sugar level.

Coffee or tea- or make good friends with room service and see if they'll help and leave extra pods for the coffee maker. Gatorade makes individual packets of powder that you can add to your water bottle. I've found them at Target.

I really liked wearing high waisted leggings from old navy when I was immediately post partum. It helped me feel like my squishy tummy wasn't everywhere and I didn't worry about my underwear and pad shifting around. Button up shirts over a Cami and nursing bra for when we left for Dr appointments and when we were at home I just threw a robe over my nursing tank.

Even with nursing pads I leaked a ton over my shirts bras and camis from day 3 on. You might not, but it might be nice to have some travel detergent soap with you so you can wash things in the sink if they get leaked on or otherwise soiled. I've seen travel laundry soap at REI that's meant for hand washing.

Can you have Amazon deliver a box of diapers, wipes and something to hold the baby in directly to the hotel? That could free up your suitcase and leave you with less stuff to haul around.

Get extension cords or a surge protector - you will probably need to plug stuff all over the place.

For baby have Mylicon and gripe water just in case.

Get a humidifier - hotel rooms can often be really dry, especially if you have to run the heater.

I would seriously Google a laundromat and just send your husband every few days. 10 days worth of clothes and stuff for everyone is insane.

Nursing tanks in black - it's not as noticeable if you're leaking.

A robe and comfy pants are a must. Several pairs.

Buy/grab disposable incontinence pads - they call them chux pads at the hospital. They will be helpful for you post partum in bed, they make great crib pads under the baby's sheet, a good changing pad, etc.

Lansinoh disposable nursing pads were the best.

Lansinoh lanolin ointment.

Nipple shield.

Pumping bra - even if you use a hospital pump, they wont have bras and it's annoying sitting there holding the flanges.

Have a few nursettes of formula with the disposable nipples - your hospital should give you some if you ask. My milk didn't come in for a week even with round the clock pumping so there's that.

Speaking of hospitals, try to cop as much as you can. My hospital gave us so much stuff and my nurses all basically told me to take anything that wasn't nailed down. If you tell every nurse at shift change you are headed for a hotel for 10 days after birth they will probably get you a TON of stuff. You can almost certainly get those plastic tubs (they work as awesome diaper supply holders), chux pads, sample tubes of lanolin, a small package of diapers, and big mesh underwear (get as much of that mesh underwear as possible!). Mine also gave me a belly binder, pacis, formula nursettes and nipples, a sack of syringes in every size, a giant diaper bag of supplies, a hand knit hat, a nipple shield, a belly binder, lanolin, enough granny pads to last me through apocalypse, and I can't even remember what else. It filled the car.

@Eieio: congratulations on your upcoming gotcha day! I'd add some kind of entertainment for you- newborns sleep and eat and sleep and eat and having a kindle, smart phone and other one handed entertainment might be nice. I started a subscription to audible when my son was born and I love it. I was a big reader prior to baby and even though I don't read with my eyes as much now, I can stay in the book world with audio books.

Will anyone be staying with you? If you'll have help a pair of earplugs and a sleeping mask could be nice. Being able to nap while someone else tends baby helps a lot.
