If someone traveled to visit you, what touristy spots would you send them to? Do you visit these spots often?

Not much here in Eastern Iowa, other than than the Field of Dreams movie site, I've been to twice.
There are some beautiful cities/towns on the Mississippi River with small stores, ice cream shops, fishing/boating, gorgeous state parks.

Hershey Park, Chocolate World, Amish Country, Dutch Wonderland, Lancaster outlet shopping, City Island (Harrisburg Senators AA baseball game)...
ETA: This is Central PA. We're also an easy day trip to Philly (2 hours), Baltimore (1.5 hours), and DC or NYC (3 hours).

I put them on the train to NYC, lol. In 50 minutes, they're in the Big Apple.
If they want to go north, it's Boston.

We're right outside of Boston - so - there. Also living on the North Shore there are a lot of great places to visit along the coast.

NYC, Boston, Cape Cod, Hamptons (a ferry trip away), Newport, RI, etc.

We live in Northern Westchester so we are super close to NYC, lots of hiking and camping spots, Hudson Valley farms and wineries, the CT/Westchester coast (LI Sound), and good fishing spots.

We live in Oregon wine country, there are over 100 wineries within 5 miles of us. Multnomah Falls. The Oregon Coast. Portland.

NYC or Boston. Though, we don't go as often as we should/could, considering we are within 2 hours of each. Locally within CT I might suggest Mystic Aquarium/Seaport or possibly our Wine Trail, it brings you to very quaint and charming areas around our state that you might not visit otherwise. The wines aren't anything outstanding but it's more about the sightseeing.

All the Chicago tourist sites, Garfield Park conservatory, Wicker Park/Bucktown for shopping, Logan Square for burgeoning food scene.

@Alba4: I still haven't been, though I desperately want to! The next time the grandparents visit I want to take a kid-free trip there.

We live less than a mile from Boston, so Boston itself, Cape Cod, the Berkshires, Rockport MA, Portsmouth NH, Kennebunkport ME, and Newport RI are all close by (within 2 hrs).

We're in a European capital in Central Europe so tourist attractions abound, and most everywhere in Europe is within a 2-2.5 flight from us.

I live in NY surburbs so tons and tons and tons to do/see. I personally avoid all tourists spots unless someone visits and I have to take them!

We live in Seattle, so Pike Place Market, the Space Needle and the other museums at Seattle Center, the Boeing Factory tour, Museum of Flight. We've got some spectacular parks and gardens right in the city, and if you drive an hour, mountains and waterfalls. Also, I pass the cruise ships to/from Alaska on my commute during the summer months.
I try to avoid the Market in the summer because it's too crowded with tourists, but there are some businesses there I patronize regularly. We don't go up the Space Needle unless we have a visitor who wants to, but the Children's Museum is right next to it so we're there often. Haven't been on an Alaskan cruise yet, but we might do that someday.

what @littlebug said. And this summer downtown Harrisburg has these really cool dinosaur statues in the city... a nice low-cost fun thing to do (even though it costs as much to park in downtown Harrisburg as Rehoboth Beach....but that's a long story.)

Space Needle, Pike Place Market, Mt. Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula, Forks (Twilight!)....

I live in Atlanta, so if someone comes to stay with me, I'd recommend Stone Mountain, the GA Aquarium, the World of Coke, the Varsity (an old fashioned drive-in with awesome chili dogs), or a Braves game. I've been to all of those before, but not recently. I have been to the zoo this year, so I could add that to the list.
Places we live close enough for a short visit include Savannah, Asheville, Charleston, Jacksonville, Chattanooga, and Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Again, I've been to all those but not that recently. My parents have a place in the north GA mountains that's about 2 hours from my house, and we do go there quite a bit.

South FL so many! Orlando and all the theme parks, beaches and such!

I live in LA so basically all of LA. Beaches, Walk of Fame, Disneyland, etc. etc. Interestingly enough when we have foreign guests visit, they all want to go to Vegas (4 hour drive / 1 hour flight)

@dagret: I can't wait to take D downtown to see the dinosaurs! He's on a big dino kick these days! Luckily I can park for free at Harrisburg Hospital...

@krispi: Hee hee...I'd go to Senoia and try to stalk Norman Reedus at his new restaurant!

The Mighty Five are probably the biggest draw, especially for foreign tourists: Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion, and Capital Reef National Parks. Closer to where I live we are known for skiing in winter, and hiking/mountain biking in summer. The Sundance Film Festival takes place in the town where I grew up (and where my parents still live).

@littlebug: we got to see a few when we went down to ArtsFest, but I want to go to Fed Taphouse some Sunday for brunch and take a walk on 2nd.

We're about an hour away from the south jersey coastline, 20 minutes to get to Philadelphia (historic old city or center city), an hour or so drive to six flags, dorney, or sesame place. There's also a bunch of quaint little shopping towns - new hope, doylestown, smithville, haddonfield.

I live in NYC, so.....yeah I'll take visitors to some of our local sites (Brooklyn Botannic Gardens, Brooklyn Bridge Park), but really try to avoid things like the Statue of Liberty, WTC Memorial, Empire State Building - they get a subway pass and a detailed Google Map instruction for that!
nectarine / 2964 posts
Ack! If someone comes to my town (Atlanta), there is nothing here....! I guess CNN, Olympic park, Coca Cola Museum, GA aquarium (if they like that)... Great, I can not think of anything else.
If it is an option I'd take my guests to Savannah or if they have kids, we'll go down to florida Disney world.....

SW Florida here, so Sanibel and Captiva Island and Fort Myers Beach are within 30 minutes of us. Within a few hours, we have Orlando, so all those theme parks, plus Tampa, even more theme parks. Miami is also just a couple hours away. The entire state is like a vacation destination.

live near San Francisco, so Ghiradelli Square, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, if they have a little more time, Napa/Sonoma up north, or Monterey/Santa Cruz down south.

The Smoky Mountains. Not much else! We go occasionally.
We moved here from NYC. Used to have tons of touristy things nearby!

We are about 1.5 hours from Niagara Falls and Niagara wine county. We are about 30 mins from downtown toronto attractions like the CN tower, Ripleys Aquarium, Casa Loma (big manor built in ealry 1900's), distillery district (cobblestone roads and great shops/restaurants.). I love Toronto, it has so much to offer in the way of tourism. With the exhange rate, travel to Canada is so cheap!!

I'm in Orlando, so theme parks! Short drive to beaches, the space center, etc. Luckily we love theme parks, because that's mostly why our friends and family come to visit

Philly (45 minutes), Baltimore (90 minutes), DC (2 hours), NYC (2.5 hours), and local beaches (2 hours). We live near a lot of major cities, and I live in the "drive through" state. Too many attractions to list in each city.
