We all went out to dinner. and Mrs. Bee's dad grilled me for a while.
The funny part (in retrospect) is that nobody talked during the entire dinner... everyone just ate quietly. Just when I started to relax, then the questions started! Later I realized that Koreans aren't usually that chatty at dinner (especially parents)... at the time, I thought maybe everyone was giving me the silent treatment!
What was it like meeting your SO's parents for the first time?

Hubs and I were great friends for years before we started dating so we had met each other's parents before. But as soon as we did begin to date, my parents disapproved and their (hubs and my parents) first official meeting post "just friends" didn't happen until AFTER we got engaged and it was awkward, silent, nerve wracking and terrifying all at once. It's a long and painful story. Happily, everything worked out in the end and all is well.

I was blind sided by the first meeting. We were long distance from the beginning, so we only saw each other on scheduled weekends. On my second (!) trip down to see him, his parents showed up for the entire weekend. He swears it wasn't planned but I'm not convinced.
I had had really bad experiences with previous partners' family so I was super bummed. Turns out they were really cool. On the first night we drank whiskey together and bonded 
not at all what I expected after dating a bunch of Asian guys!

Haha DH and I started dating in high school (just 3 days after he broke up with another girlfriend- I was kinda the "other girl" though he didn't cheat...ack!). I would go to his house, but stay in my car, to "trade homework" since he was really good at history (and of course to see him). When we finally started dating, I met his parents a few days later and his mom said "I've been wondering who that little blonde girl in the vw beetle was, since my son was always smiling when he came back inside..." Sooo embarrassing, but its funny now.

I was a nervous wreck meeting my husband's mom for the first time. His mom was unsure of me because I am so much younger than my husband and was only 18 at the time. It took us a while to feel comfortable around each other.

I ended up meeting the entire family, not just my in-laws. We went out to a birthday dinner and there was 15 people there! I sat next to his nephew- at the time he was 3/4 and all he ate was sugar packets for dinner.

It was awkward. It's still awkward every time I see them. We had to go visit them because we didn't live near them (still don't) so it was an entire weekend of get to know you. There was no alcohol involved. Uggghhh.

My inlaws live in Chile, so I met his sister when we started dating because she lived up here, and his grandparents, but didn't meet his dad until we had been dating for a year and a half and his mom and brother when they came up for the wedding! Lucky thing they like me

I don't really remember so it couldn't have been too painful. I met them over Christmas break while we were home from college. I was young and it was nine years ago!

It was super easy. It wasn't planned or formal. DH and I went to his parents house (where he was staying for the weekend) and watched a movie (hs styleeee! LOL we were postcollege age) 'til late at night. Then a few weeks later, they took us out to dinner.
They were always easy to talk to and welcoming

It was fine. We were both 18 then so they didn't really pay much attention to me. They probably just thought "eh, whatever, just another girlfriend."

We were in high school and my (now) husband's house was the place everyone gathered at to hang out. A bunch of us had been playing frisbee in his backyard and then we went down to his basement to watch a movie. On the way, I stopped to pet his dog in the kitchen and met his mom. At the time, neither of us knew I'd eventually marry her son!

Well. HAHA.
I met my MIL the day DH and I got married (eloped!). She flew in for the ceremony. It was really nice and felt natural meeting her. She's great.
I met my FIL a month later.
DH met my parents the morning after we eloped. They didn't know we were married 
They grilled him a little, but it was a pleasant lunch.

I met them 2 years ago this weekend.
I went to his family Memorial Day BBQ picnic. I remember him telling his dad quietly (but wasn't quiet enough lol) that I "Was a keeper"
Now they are my family too.

I went to Poland without my DH (boyfriend at the time) just to meet his parents for 5 days. They don't speak English and I don't speak Polish. My sister in law translated as best she could. I wanted his mom to meet me before we moved in together and DH couldn't take off from work so I went alone. We got along fine but yes I would say compared to a normal dinner out it was awkward.

I was the first girl that DH ever brought home so his parents were very excited. We went out to eat and they gave me hugs right away. I really felt like I was welcomed to the family from day one. His mom is a big talker so there were no awkward silences. It was a good first meeting!

um... not the greatest.
My FIL told me and I quote "You must be desperate!" I responded with a "what do you mean"... "well, you must be desperate to go out with my son" (because he's overweight)
I was speechless... it's then I found out I was the only girl SO brought home, and well he never had a relationship with his father. Now, my FIL is a new man...

I met his sister first and I was pretty nervous since he's really close to his sister but she's really nice and things went great. I met his parents a few days later, on my birthday, and they were really nice too. They're pretty old fashioned so I was never referred to as a "girlfriend" by them..I was always introduced as his friend, even after we were engaged.

It was totally super awkward. We had been dating about a month and they were really anxious to meet me, but I hadn't known DH that well when we started dating so I wanted to feel more comfortable with him before I met his folks. Well they kept begging DH to meet me, so I finally agreed. We met for brunch after church one Sunday and it was awful. They all just kind of watched me eat and I was totally self conscious the whole time.
DH told me his mother loved me before she even met me because I wasn't Catholic. Oh dear.
DH had dated a catholic a year before me and it didn't go over well... his mother was/is a big judgmental about beliefs different than hers. So she was just happy that I was of the same belief system. lol
When DH met my parents, he was nervous as heck! We'd been dating 5 months, and I had to take him with me to visit my family - I was living half way across the country at the time. So he was stuck with them for a whole week. But they loved him from the moment they met him and my mom was sooo happy because she hated my previous boyfriend lol. It went a lot better than it had when I met his folks.

Well, the first time DH and I hung out after our first initial meeting (going midnight sledding with a group of friends) was a new years eve party at his house. there were a ton of people there, including his parents and siblings. I ended up getting absolutely wasted drunk and his parents kept wondering who the sloppy girl was he was hanging out with and taking care of.
I am so mortified that was their first impression of me. I am hoping over the past 3.5 years I have made up for it!!!

@eeh: Hahaha. My Mom has that problem. She's not old fashioned at all but she despises the words girlfriend or boyfriend. She calls everyone your "friend." Even when we had been dating 6 years, my now husband was my friend.

I was welcomed with open arms when I met my DH's parents, however it was a little awkward. We were at a wedding reception, and I knew his parents were going to be there. WE went and sat down at a table with his brother (who I knew previously) and was unware that we had walked right by his parents without saying hi, I guess he was nervous to introduce us!
Well we were staying at his parent's house that night, so I ended up meeting his dad at the very end of the night for a night cap (after quite a bit to drink) and his mom the next morning at breakfast...awkward!!! haha we joke about it today, but DH should have introduced me at the beginning of the night!
