I went away for college so freshman year I lived in the dorms. It was a fun experience and I would like my children to experience that! Sophomore year 3 friends and I rented a place; worst idea, ever. Junior year I moved out with my BF now DH. 
College was local to DH so he was living at home freshman year, practically at my rental sophomore.

I lived in the dorms for 3 years, the 1st two with roommate, my senior year in a single. My junior year I was abroad and had my own apartment!

First year I lived in the dorms (second semester I was practically living in a BF's on-campus apartment though). After that I rented a house with two guys.

First year was with my parents, second year I lived on my own. Now in my third year and I live with DH (there were significant breaks between each year)

I went to school in philadelphia....
1st year - Dorms hated my roommate and she dropped out in Feb so i had the room to myself until june
2nd year - Apt style campus housing. 2 bdrm apt 4 girls total
3rd year - rented 2 floors of an older home on campus. 4 bedrooms and 5 girls. my roommate and I from the last place shared the largest room the other 3 girls each had their own room. I met my husband while living in this house... his best friend lived in the apt the floor above ours.
4th year - one of the girls moved in with her BF the other four of us moved back into the apt complex this time independent of the university. I stayed with my room mate and the other 2 girls shared a room, but one ended up co-oping in LA for 6 months and the other studied abroad for the last 3 months of our lease. so for the most part it was just me and my roommate until we found a sublet for the one girl.

i lived in the dorm for a semester. Then spent 2.5 years in a sorority house. The last year, my roommate and I shared an apartment.

I lived in my college dorms all 4 years. the first 2 years were a standard hallway style dorm, where you share a big bathroom with all the people on your floor and have to eat in a dining hall because there is no kitchen. my last 2 years the dorms were like apartments, with shared kitchens and bathrooms for 5-6 roommates. I shared a room my first and junior years, and had my own bedroom my sophomore and senior years.

I lived in the dorms all 4 years and for 3 summers. I had a roommate my freshman year, was an RA sophomore and junior years so I had my own room, and senior year I shared a suite with friends (had my own room but shared common areas).

I lived in a dorm my freshman year, sophomore year moved into a suite with 3 other girls, and junior and senior years I shared a 2-bd apartment with one of my suitemates! Not sharing a room was heaven!

I lived in a dorm freshman year and half of sophomore year. I feel that dorms the first year was the best thing ever for me. As a sophomore though - AWFUL.
Then for the rest of the 3.5 years I lived at home - that wasn't much better than dorms as a sophomore, but at least it was free!

I was in a dorm for years 1, 2 and 4. Housing wasn't available for all 4 years, so most juniors moved off and came back for senior year.

1st half of Freshman year: At my parents' house (thanks Katrina)
2nd half of Freshman year- all of Soph year: Dorm
Junior year: Apt with 2 friends
I then moved to a different apartment every. single. semester for the next two years. Yes, two. It took me a while to graduate 
By the time DH and I settled down, I had lived in over a dozen places in 6 years.

I went to college 30 minutes from home, but I still lived on campus. The first year I lived in a dorm with one of my high school friends. Our other friend from high school lived down the hall. My last two years (I graduated a year early), I lived in an on campus apartment with those two friends and another girl.
I loved it! I'm still really close to my two roomies- we all actually went to dinner together last night.

I lived in a suite style dorm for my first two years - 6 girls with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom to share. The last two years I lived in an on-campus townhouse. Everyone had their own bedroom with shared common areas.

Freshman year - dorms. Loved them, had the best time!
Soph & Jr year - sorority house. Loved that too, living with 52 of my closest friends!
Sr year - apt with three of my best friends just off the main quad, with 12 other good friends living in the same building. Crazy times!
Grad school - an off campus (but still in campus town) apt with one good friend. Best time yet possibly!

First year I lived in the Freshman dorms. It was AWESOME. I made my best friends (still are my best friends) that year--we all lived on the same hall. My roommate and I were inseparable.
Sophomore year I got an apartment with two of the girls mentioned above (I met them on my hall). We had a small place but it had a super nice pool.
Junior year I lived with my parents. I transferred to a school that was closer to home (since I had met DH) instead of 2,000 miles away.
Senior year I was married and lived with DH!

I lived with family friends of ours, and it was really pretty fun. The mom and dad were mid 30s and had a son and daughter that were in elem/middle school when I moved in. I had my own level of the house, came and went as I pleased, but ate dinner with them when I was around and watched the kids when I was available. It was pretty awesome, and I saved a ton of money (no rent, they fed me) and gained a second family.

I lived in the dorms first year and hated it!!! I'm an introvert and only child and I never felt so stressed out and irritated my whole life. My parents made me live there "for the experience" and I was miserable. No clue why they wanted me to experience vapid girls and underage drinking... I was so uncomfortable, could never sleep and spent most of my time driving around trying to have some semblance of personal space. (The school heavily advised against students bringing cars to campus but I fought hard for that and thankfully got to. I felt like it was my only escape.) sophomore year I got a very small apartment.... Alone!!!

After that, a series of homes/apartments/condos with roommates. Some good, some terrible.

@ginabean-8 person room?!?! How wa your house set up?!?! Ours was 21 2-man rooms with your typical main common areas. Not a huge house (was a regular house that wings were added to)

Year 1- dorm. It was fine, definitely an "experience." Unfortunately my roommate was the prom queen from her hs where 40 (literally) other of her classmates had come to our school. So she was basically never around and I never got to have that fun roommate bonding thing.
Year 2- Got an apartment with 2 (male) friends and my boyfriend. Four people in 2 bedrooms (<800 sq ft) was a horrible idea. Still, it was probably more fun than drama. But definitely some drama.
Year 3- I had signed a lease to leave with one of my good friends and our boyfriends were going to live together on the floor above us. It was going to be great--- until she broke up with her boyfriend and switched schools like a month before school started so I had to find a replacement asap which ended up to be some random girl who turned out to be psycho.

I went to college in a small town and everyone lived in the dorms all 4 years. At the time we all sort of wished we could be off-campus but in hindsight it was nice to be on campus with friends for 4 years.
