My due date is tomorrow. I'm 36. My doctor doesn't want me to go beyond the end of this week due to my age. She is giving me the option of inducing as soon as tomorrow or being monitored daily and being induced on Friday. I can't decide what to do. Any advice?

Wait. You may go into labor on your own and even that three days could help your body and your baby be better prepared for a smooth induction.

Seriously though, I probably would go ahead, but I don't see a problem with waiting until later. A lot can happen in a few days.

I would absolutely wait - especially with the monitoring. 36 frankly is just not that old so I'm amazed they are wanting daily monitoring as it is!
Your body is obviously still preparing for delivery and inducing when it is not medically indicated definitely increases your risk of a traumatic birth and/or c-section. Obviously sometimes the benefits of inducing outweigh the potential negatives but I think with the additional monitoring they will know whether that's the case!

Could you ask for a membrane sweep or internal exam to try to get things going?

I would wait until the end of the week if she is willing to let you go. How is baby doing now? Is she moving a lot and lots of fluid and normal heart rhythm? If so, I would feel comfortable waiting. I am eager to meet more January babies though! This one seems like she might stay in till February!

I would consider the induction but talk with doctor about your favorability for induction (they use something called a bishop's score). I waited until 40+6 to be induced and the induction went so well that I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. My biggest fear about induction was the cascade of interventions that could lead to c section but talking with my doc helped me feel comfortable about my chances. I also did research on going post date (42 weeks) and there are risks with that as well.
Is this your first? I am pregnant with my second now and would be comfortable with induction if I get past my due date this time. Of course it is your decision.

I'm surprised that 36 is a medical reason for your doctor to induce. I would wait assuming everything looks good for you and baby! Good luck!!

I'd do what my doctor recommended, but ask a lot of questions and try to get things going on their own first, via a membrane sweep or something. Good luck!

I would wait because it really could be any day now. I'd want my cervix checked to calculate Bishop score as well. If your cervix isn't ready, then it makes even more sense to wait.

If the annoyance factor of the monitoring is deterring you at all, I had to go for fetal monitoring toward the end of my pregnancy, and it was honestly the best thing.
It gave me a chance to do a few recon missions of getting from home to the hospital, hang out and get the lay of the land of the maternity ward and meet some of the nurses. And a nurse typically sat with me for a little bit, and we just chatted about what to expect, and I got her to give me the real low down on things like what percentage of people really poop while pushing (lots). Had I known I was going for monitoring, I could have saved serious $$$ on prenatal classes. My husband came a few times and she schooled him too. Sometimes I had a nap... it was lovely. -
I can't see why you can't wait unless there are serious concerns for you or your baby to wait. As long as you're being monitored. Happy due date!!!

I would probably go with whatever my doctor more strongly recommended. I'm not in the medical field at all, and I can only assume my doctors have my best interests in mind.
If my doctor said both options were equally safe and recommended, I would probably wait.

Depends. How are things progressing? Are you dilated or thinned out at all? I was stalled at 4cm and 40% effaced for over a week. My OB offered a induction on my due date and we took it. In the end she broke my water and baby came like an hour after! But this was also my second baby. Since this is your first your will likely go much longer.
Did you ask your ob why they are offering you a scheduled induction?

@regberadaisy: yes, the induction is due to my age. I'm 3cm and not sure on effacement. Wow, an hour? Lucky mama!

Age, shmage. I would wait until Friday to be induced! Then you also have the weekend for family/friends to visit you in the hospital.

I would absolutely wait as long as possible, if everything looks fine. An induction certainly isn't the end of the world, but I would much rather go into labor on my own. And 36 seems so young to be considered at risk for age reasons!

I've decided to wait until Friday. I know baby is healthy because she's moving a lot and her heartbeat was strong yesterday at the doc. I'm waiting to hear back about my monitoring schedule. I'll enjoy these last few days of sleep, unless she decides to come out on her own! Thank you all SO MUCH for the advice.

@CatchAFallingStar: good luck! I hope she comes on her own but i do think you are making the right choice. Also my son was born on a friday and it was awesome because his next 2 birthdays were on weekends and my husband got more time added to his time off.

I would wait. My baby was due about two months before my 37th birthday. My water broke at 10pm nine days after his due date, and he was born at 1am eleven days after his due date.

Chiming in with everyone else, I would wait, too! Especially since you are feeling good and all signs show that baby is healthy. I had doctor's appointments leading up to my induction, and I would get NSTs instead-- once the doc saw that baby was doing well, my induction date would get pushed back by 1-2 days. Finally, I went into labor on my own and was admitted to the hospital about 6 hours before I was supposed to be induced

I'm so happy you made a choice that's best for you. Before I read your update, my advice was going to be: it's YOUR baby, and YOUR body. The doctor can guide you, but not force you.
36 is a perfectly healthy age to give birth (even up until 42 weeks), and I'd fight to go into labor without induction (if that's important to you).
I found that seeing an acupuncturist a few times during my last week of pregnancy was a nice way to relax, and I think the cervical ripening helped jumpstart labor.
Again, if natural labor is important to you, maybe you could ask your doctor to strip your membranes on Friday, and support you going through the weekend to see if you go into labor.
