not sure of my answers are relevant, since it doesn't snow here... doesn't get below 0 Celcius, but we get winds direct from Antarctica which are pretty darn icy

For staying in the house? short sleeved onesie under a footed sleeper
For sleeping? short sleeves onesie, cotton footed sleeper, muslin swaddle with merino swaddle wrapped over top
For going on walks outside in a pouch or stroller? SS onesie, socks, footed sleeper, sweater of some sort, hat, mittens. we didn't have a foot muff for our stroller so I had a merino blanket and a fuzzy blanket wrapped around his mid section and legs
For going into the car seat? whatever he was going to be wearing when we got where we were going. kept a blanket to wrap around him just in case
Any other gear you found useful for keeping a tiny baby warm?
LOVED my merino blankets. will def be getting a few more for the next LO. and like @lamariniere: said, I always carried an extra blanket or 2 just in case!

I had a December baby, in the Alps, when we had a snow storm.

My son lived in footed sleepers for his first 6 months. I had nicer ones from Ralph Lauren that looked like regular polo shirts, but all one piece when we went out and the standard Carters pajamas for when we were home and overnight.

The best snow suit I had was one from the Gap, that had the option to be a bunting or with legs. There was a zipper or snaps in the center, between the legs that you could either open or close. Sounds bizzare, but so easy to put the baby in, when you don't have to worry about sticking their legs into leg openings.

We also had a muff for our stroller, but we only used that the winter when he was 1. For our car seat, we had a shower cap type thing that went over the seat by JJ Cole.

What region are you in?

Our winters vary from mild (we took a walk in 50* in February!) to unpredictable (we had a snowstorm a few days after C was born... In October!)

We weren't very prepared for the first snowstorm. We didn't have a lot of newborn clothing & expected her to be bigger than she was. When we woke up to 3" of snow, I panicked & sent my husband to Kohls to get winter clothing for her!

We keep our house warm in the winter so cotton zip-up sleepers were my go to. I didn't want to fumble with buttons at 3am.

We had fleece jackets for the milder months, like November & March, and a carseat cover for the harsh months.

No walks for us during the harsh winter months.. We either get plowed in or the wind was so fierce I couldn't imagine taking an infant out in that kind of weather (I'm talking wind chill advisories!)

I liked fleece sleepers for night time & always kept the heat on 74-75*. Chloe hated sleep sacks

If she napped in the RnP I'd lay a blanket over top of her legs, but only if I was right beside her and awake.

For staying in the house? Lo was usually in an undershirt, onesie, and pants, or a onesie and pants with a cardigan/sweater over it.

For sleeping? A footed sleeper and swaddle or double swaddle. on REALLY cold nights I would put an undershirt on as well, but he never seemed to run hot like so many babies do.

For going on walks outside in a pouch or stroller? We had a fleece bunting (similar to what hellobeeboston posted) that was basically like a heavy fleece sleepsack with a hood. Under that he would wear his regular outfit (undershirt, onesie, pants). Then over that a blanket if it was really cold.

For going into the car seat? He was rarely in his carseat, but if he was it was literally just for 5 minutes walking to and from the car, so he was just in an outfit with a heavy blanket. I did buy a fleece footed and hooded snap up outfit from zutano that we used several times in the carseat and when I wore him.

Any other gear you found useful for keeping a tiny baby warm.
That fleece bunting bag was awesome (we got ours from baby gap and I think they have them every year).
