The longest we've gone is 17 days after Hurricane Ike. That's how long we were without power. It was September, so it wasn't the hottest part of the year. It was still hot though!

@.twist.: I don't think A/C is common in AB. I only recently found out it was a luxury.

I don't really need it as long as I have a fan. I get a bit sweaty once it gets to be 100 but as long as I have a fan on me I'm fine, I love when it's hot. We did get window units once LO was born and my husband does sleep better using them once it gets to be in the 90s.

We just moved into the first house ever that we have had AC. I've literally never had it before, so it's a REALLY big deal for us!

My entire childhood? We didnt get central air until I was in high school.

We dont currently have A/C here either. They dont install it in homes here. Thank god there was only about a week that we needed it last year.

We don't have central air/heat BUT you better believe we have window units.... temps in the 80's happen all. year. round here (we're talking 100+ in the summer). Longest I can ever remember going was 2 days and we stayed at my moms until the maintenance guys could get to it & get it fixed!

My grandmother's house never had central AC, and she had only 1 window unit (down stairs, in the living room), so every time we visited her, we just slept with big box fans pointed straight at us.

however...now that I'm an adult---absolutely not. I can not survive without AC. Especially right now, while pregnant. I would have bought an AC on the first DAY if mine was out. I'm just too used to it.

I did stay in places in India that just had fans and no AC, but it was only a few days, and they were giant box fans, so it was bearable. But otherwise....no.

I don't know why it never occurred to me that not everyone has A/C!

I've never lived in/been in a house without it

We had a wall unit in our top floor apartment when we lived there last year and it did NOT work well. The only time you could feel it was standing directly in front of it. I was super pregnant and it was always 84+ degrees in there and I was cranky. The house we have now has central AC but we are too scared to try and turn it on I have an odd feeling it won't work, so what I don't know doesn't hurt me. Pathetic I know.

I lived in a house without air conditioning. We had a window unit downstairs but only turned it on during restaurant hours (I lived in a restaurant). Upstairs we could only use fans, and it was unbearable at times. I survived. Of course I like the luxury of air conditioning and happily turn it on in the summers. So far we haven't had to turn it on quite yet. LO's room has been hovering between 70 - 78 at night, and it's not too bad.

We didn't have AC in our last house, just a swamp cooler, so 2 years there... Both in Africa and India I didn't have AC. I'm a huge fan of it because of that! I hate being too hot.

I went an entire year without a working air conditioner and it was the summer of 2010 which was one of the hottest on record. My slumlord wouldn't replace the wall unit and we didn't want to pay $1,000 for a new one so we held out. It helped that we spent almost every weekend at my parents beach house but sleeping was definitely the hardest part.

@mrbee: I know about fan death, and my mom always yelled at me for having a fan in my room when i was a kid. But the same link states: "The EPA does, however, approve of using a fan if a window is open and it's cooler outside, such as during overnight conditions, or if the indoor heat index in a closed room is below 90 °F (32 °C)."

We keep a fan going for a couple of hours when her room is really hot and then turn it off before i go to bed. Is there a difference between A/C and fan though?

I'm in the south and have never lived without central AC. I would die. We've made middle-of-the night phone calls to the repair man to fix our air.

And I've never heard of fan death. Every house I've lived in has has at least one ceiling fan, and sometimes a stand alone fan, as well. We like our fans in Florida.

@mrbee: Sorry, i've been in quite a serious mood this morning. I actually started to panic...

From birth until I was about 25? We didn't have AC at home and I didn't buy a window until until after a few years of really hot summers that I couldn't take it anymore.... or my tolerance got lower and lower as I got older. I live in MA though so it doesn't get that bad imo. Though hubby is turning on the AC night already since it heated up to 82 in our bedroom.

Yuck -only a couple days for us. Of course when our AC goes out, its in the middle of summer when temps are 110+(it seems to be the rule, not the exception) so, you can't really stay in a place w/o AC. And if you can, well, more power to you!

I never had A/C growing up and I didn't have it as an adult until I moved in with DH so a lonnnnng time!

we only have window units..that kind of suck. so the longest I've gone is a long time..haha.
