I think I'm almost there. I showered Saturday morning and that's it. I'm still in the same pj's I put on after I got out. Ew. Waiting on DH to get home so he can watch LO while I shower.
I usually shower every day! I stink. Gross. Lol

I think I've gone maybe four days. I was desperate once LO was born so I took her with me. She chilled in the Moses basket and I took the quickest shower ever.

Way way longer than that! I used to do backcountry trips that would last 10+ days! We did go swimming though.

On maternity leave it may have been longer but usually its 2 days - then my hair is beyond greasy and I must shower!!!
persimmon / 1281 posts
Oh wow, I'm not officially a mommy yet but what a dose of reality. Does it really get that difficult to find 10 mins during the day to shower? Not judging, really, just really concerned.

When LO was first born, my stitches got wickedly infected, and I couldn't do the stairs at all. So I think it was three full days before I could get to the shower. I usually shower daily, so I felt really gross.

@Glitter: In a word, yes. It's that difficult sometimes.
I've probably gone 3-4 days without a shower, especially when DS was born.

Probably 3-4 days max. My hair can't handle it after 2 days but if I was desperate, I go ponytail + headband or put on a cap!

3 or 4 days while camping. I don't remember specifically. We camped for two weeks once (hunting trip) and had to watch our water usage. But we took a few showers each.

@Glitter: depends on the baby. I have never, ever missed a shower due to LO. Maybe my own laziness/business but not because of him. Even the first week he came home I took a shower every day (most of them were even with DH, sorry if that's TMI) so no, that's not typical. Babies DO sleep ya' know
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
2 days? I'm dying for shower by then! I change my undergarments daily though.
nectarine / 2358 posts
Ha. Hahahaha. Um, a while like 5 days? Or something like that. And I'm not even a mom yet. I was in the hospital and had to be bedbound because my spinal fluid was leaking!

The first few days after LO was born I was too terrified to shower and move. I probably went 3-4 days and I was soooooo stinky!

Uhhh...2 weeks? It was in the context of a backpacking trip, we bathed in a river and got rinsed off in a rain shower, and we never interacted with general society. But yeah...we were pretty ripe by the end of that!
As for showering with baby, my strategy was: 1) clear plastic shower curtain (him not being able to see me was cause for hysteria), 2) LO fed and newly diapered in the car seat on the bathroom floor, and 3) show tunes sung by yours truly. There might also have been some jazz hands poked outside the shower curtain from time to time. These performances occurred daily.

My baby needs to be with me constantly when he's awake. When he naps I have to feed myself, pump, take the dog out, and attempt to pick up for my sanity. lol. Shower is the last thing on the list.
honeydew / 7811 posts
@Glitter: yes, it does!
On maternity leave I was definitely smelly a few times. Just different priorities! Often a nap won out over a shower!
honeydew / 7811 posts
@Danizaur: same for me, eating was usually my top priority when the baby was finally sleeping somewhere other than my arms! Then I always had to clean just a little bit or I felt I would go crazy. Everyone kept telling me to sleep but I had to do those things first!

The longest I ever went was like 2+ weeks while in ICU, but outside there, probably 2 days. The problem is I get SUPER greasy hair and after I skip showering for a day, I get extra sweaty for some reason. So by Day 2, I literally feel soaking wet all day long.

@rattles: He's just an average baby! When he naps, I shower. Easy peasy!
grapefruit / 4903 posts
@MrsTiz: My baby wouldn't nap for more than 20 minutes until 4 months, and until 3 months, she wouldn't sleep unless she was touching me. The biggest shock of motherhood for me was the total and sudden lack of personal space!

4 days? ETA: I had the flu, and pretty much didn't get out of bed. When I finally did, it was because D picked me up and put me in the tub and then stood me up to take a shower. Even washed my hair! Apparently I was starting to smell like death!
@Glitter: I rarely missed showers when E was a newborn. I waited until D got home from work and put him on baby duty while I showered. Sometimes I'd even take a bath and then shower. But I prefer night showers anyway.
Most of the time E was asleep, but even if he wasn't, that time in the shower was my time (until he was 6 months old he would only nap in my arms, so I didn't get a break during nap time). The first month or two was so hard, but having even those tiny breaks and being clean did wonders for my sanity!

I've never missed a shower due to my son. When he was a newborn, I'd just do it when my husband was watching him or when he was napping. He's 17 months and for about a year now, I get up early before him in the morning and shower. Great start to my day. I can't stand not showering daily.
Longest was probably 2 days a few times after surgeries that I have had. Oh and maybe 2-3 days when I've had the flu in the past and was just too sick to care about getting a shower.

@Glitter: I agree with @MrsTiz: that the times I haven't showered have been out of laziness. But in my case by the time the baby is asleep I just want to lie on the couch--not shower! So it's not that I can't shower because the baby demands my attention 24/7, but moreso that I'd rather do something else while I've got the chance.

@Danizaur: put him in a bouncer or swing right by you so you can take a shower--you'll feel a million times better!

I just went 4 days, was on my fifth when I finally got DS (8 weeks and has been VERY clingy/needy) asleep in the bouncy seat and took one. I was having DREAMS about showering! DH is at work for 2 days at a time so I couldn't just wait until he got home! (Before he went to work I should've done it but something always came up!). You will feel so much better if you can get one in!!
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
2 days when sick? I never missed a shower with LO being a newborn. I would bring her in with me to the bathroom and leave the door open and she would chill in her bouncy chair.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
3 days, I think. Camping and I still went swimming to rinse off. I never missed a day of showering because of my baby. No way man. I hate not showering. I became really good at taking him in with me and shaving with one hand (I also shave every day). They key is to have a shower stool. And once he got a little older, I just stuck him in the Rock n Play.
honeydew / 7091 posts
4 days, probably. Not even sorry... I changed undergarments and reapplied deodorant. I don't even think I smelled that bad? Haha
Thankfully curly hair can handle long periods of not being washed

3-4 days. My parents would visit during my maternity leave to make sure that I showered and ate. My mom made it clear that I didn't have to entertain them. Now at 18 months, I'm usually too tired to shower some nights after work and time with LO. When DH and I were away for a wedding, my DH made a point of taking a couple of showers because he could.
For LO #2, I'll remember the car seat or bouncy seat recommendations. When I went back to work, I would put LO in a bouncy seat or the Bumbo when I put on makeup and got ready for work. Although, I don't know how I'll handle two in the morning since DH doesn't do the morning routine with me.

Not counting camping (which I don't), longest was 4 days during labor and delivery. I showered before I left for the hospital, but I had an extremely long labor and needed a blood transfusion - and the MWs wouldn't let me shower until my stats had stabilized. Given how sweaty and dirty and *disgusting* I was after labor and delivery, I have never wanted a shower so badly in my life.
I showered every single day while I was on mat leave. Some days it was really hard, but a shower and clean yoga pants were a priority for me. I would shower while someone else watched DD, while she napped, or - if those weren't possible - I would put her in her chair right outside the shower.
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
Also - I said to my husband this morning, "You know you're a parent when you have a collection of toys in your bathroom!" DD hangs out in our bathroom every morning while we get ready, so we have a stash of toys.

Yeah DS was only happy being held EVER!! So that meant no showering suing naps or even awake times. He would have screamed! That being said - maybe 3 -4 days at the worst of times...

I think two days, even during the newborn days. I think even if I wind up with a kid like that next time crying for <5 mins won't kill em. (ETA..and dd was crying a lot of the time whether or not I was holding her..) Or I'll hold the baby in the shower, lol. Must shower. (But I soooooo don't judge people who don't especially if you live in a cold place!)
