... or one piece swim suits if the child isn't potty trained? I'm trying to figure it out because this year we'll probably make it to at least one pool if not the local splash pad. So what do you need? I'm assuming just a rash guard, hat, sun screen, and swim diapers? Bottoms are just for looks until they're potty trained right?
And what kind of swim diapers - the disposable kind or the clothe diaper kind or what?

I use disposable swim diapers with her regular bathing suit & a cloth swim diaper with her rash guard.

We use cloth swim diapers with her swim suit. I like that I can wash and reuse, plus, they are cute.

The YMCA here requires three layers of protection: swim diaper, plastic cover, and swimsuit bottom. So not just for looks for us! Plus on a toddler, I don't want him just walking around in a swim diaper.

I find the bathingsuits help keep the soggy, wet diapers on, especially if they're a tad bit big.

We have a reusable swim diaper for swim lessons. It will go under her suits like a normal diaper. We have disposable swim diapers for Fridays at day care.

I use a full body wet suit kind of thing, so it provides extra sun protection.
Her bikini that she wears in the pool however, pretty much just for cuteness. And an extra layer to hold in any potential floaters.

We use a 2 piece that is a rash guard on top and a reusable swim diaper on the bottom. Works great!

I think cuteness is a big factor but I think an extra layer helps if there is #2.

Swim diapers don't hold everything in! E pooped in a swim diaper and I wrapped her in a towel....which got poo water all over it, in the 5 min it took me to carry her up some stairs to the changing table. I had to wring out her bottoms, too! So gross

Like @Mrs. Pen:, our swim class requires 2 layers of diapers, the outside layer must be a reusable one. Most people put a swimsuit/trunk over it for cuteness (and I can attest the double layer thing works to contain accidents!)
At our own community pool, I usually just use 1 reusable swim diaper + swimsuit. At the splash pad, I use regular diaper + a swimsuit over. @Ellie: Is right about keeping wet diapers (from the water - gets so heavy) up!

We use reusable swim diapers. They contain everything, and you don't ever have to deal with a soggy disposable diaper mess!

Reusable swim diapers. We had plain white to go under suits (for cuteness as I wouldn't just put her in the white swim diaper) and then a patterned swim diaper with a rash guard.
