For browsing, I like skyscanner.net. I enter my airport as the departure destination and just put generally when I'm looking for flights (you can search by whole months) just to see where cheap flights are available.

i use google and set alerts. when a destination goes below a set price, i get alerts. but normally my vacations are never that flexible so i go through a travel agent.
