I haven't had my LO yet, however I know how she is with my step kids and don't think it will change much after mine. Our relationship is really good and I can talk to her about almost anything. She's really great!

She is THE sweetest woman, but a little too sweet sometimes...she can be a little over-involved with us/in our lives...not in a meddling way, but more that she is always bending over backwards for anything that we need. It makes it hard to relate to her sometimes, as she can be too saint-like! I do think we've gotten closer since LO was born, as it gives us a common bond and a common interest other than DH. I'm definitely lucky though, i'm pretty sure she and FIL like me a lot.

My MIL and I get along pretty good. She is really nice, but a real worrier. She's got high anxiety and really wants everyone she meets to like her. It irritates me, cause she ends up letting her friends walk all over her.

She also spoils ds a lot, which doesn't bother me when it's just her and him, but she likes to over ride me in front of me to spoil him after I already said no. He's not even her biological grandchild, but that doesn't really matter to her. I'm a little worried about LO with her, cause I'm way more conservative than she is, and I'm hoping she doesn't let my little girl get away with things that I wouldn't. She's very concerned with being a "cool gramma" that it does worry me.

But, maybe she'll surprise me, we'll see.

No LO's yet but I'm not fond of my MIL. She was a pretty terrible mother when my husband and his siblings were young so I have very little respect for her. I'm sure it will only get worse after we have a baby, but I won't let her walk all over me.

I see how she treats my SIL's since they've given her grandchildren and it upsets me. She constantly bad mouthes them and criticizes their parenting. She goes behind their backs and does things differently with their children because she feels that she's always right. She almost never has anything nice to say about any of them, yet her sons are always in the running for father of the year (in all reality, they're mediocre at best). The only good thing about witnessing all of this is that I'm well prepared to deal with her when we have a baby. I have a backbone that apparently my SIL's do not. Things are going to change when my kid is in the picture. I seriously can't wait to see her reaction.

@Mrs Hedgehog: your situation is so similar to mine !! She loves me and doesn't know I have issues with her !

Before LO, I loved her! After LO, she's a pain in the ass! She constantly tries to overstep boundaries and push her parenting beliefs onto me. I really dislike her now & she has no clue. I never let LO go over there without me & I won't until she can talk and tell me what evil mil is up to!

Both of my in-laws are really sweet. I don't feel like I know them very well, because we live in different states.

With MIL, there is a language barrier, so sometimes I only understand 50% of what she says (and she, me), but I really respect them both and think that in the future we'll be closer. They always call to say congratulations when something good happens to me at work, they always remember birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

So, I'd say our relationship is superficial right now, but no issues.

I'm not a fan. She was/is a terrible mother and is a terrible human being. She's a bully and thinks she can run all over you to get her way. It's disgusting. Fortunately, we don't live close to her and rarely see her.

You know, I really like my MIL. I know that will come as a shock to people who have read my recent posts but genuinely I really like her and I enjoy her company. I have a feeling this may change once LO is here as she wants to be very involved and im not good when people are on my case but hopefully it will all work out.

She's dead. I really loved her though. FIL is a challenge. He “dislikes” women and thinks they are stupid and shouldn't be allowed to drive or vote or work.

I'm really thankful that DH is always on my side and isn't fond of his father either.

I have no idea how FIL will react when we're having a child. On the one hand he believes its a womans purpose to have children on the other he believes that women do this to men to control them and to have someone who provides for them and that his live ended when he had his sons and that he's stuck with them now that his wife is dead.... I'm sorry, I'm getting angry. I hope we can continue only seeing him twice a year after we have children....

I'd say we're distant. We are also dealing with a culture/language barrier. She is usually quite nice to me when we're together, but I always got the impression that there were things she didn't like about me that she simply didn't say to my face. That impression was confirmed when they were visiting a whole back and got into a huge fight with us over nothing, then took the opportunity to accuse me of weird crap.

The hard thing is that DH has never been close with them, as they've always had a very clear preference for his older brother. So I don't have much of an incentive to try. If he made more of an effort, I would, too.

My MIL is wonderful. Whenever we get together, she thanks me for letting her have time with LO. We're about an hour apart, but I think that they;d drive up to see us each weekend if we asked them too. She's very thoughtful, asking how she can help at our house, offering food and drink at hers. If LO fusses and DH and I are still eating, she'll finish quickly and take her. We've always gotten along well, but now that LO is here, it's amazing.

Mine was absolutely wonderful.... before I got pregnant. Now she is a nosy, boundary-ignoring busybody who has an opinion on everything from how we diaper to what I eat for breakfast. Her favorite statement? "Well, I don't know about you doing that to MY baby." Umm, this is not your baby crazy woman. She is extremely critical and overbearing. I absolutely cannot stand her anymore. I'm going to have to lay down the law after LO gets here.

My MIL is really sweet. She has a good heart and means well, but I get bored being around her because she isn't very... deep. She's a little bit of an airhead and so I can't talk to her that long before I am losing my mind.
Overall she's a really good person though. Unlike my FIL.

I get along really well with my MIL, she is always kind and is incredibly respectful of our decisions when it comes to LO. I think there will always annoyances one way or another with two women in this type of relationship but we make it work. We go shopping together, lunches, visits etc.

Not great. My MIL is a very negative person and quite bitter too. She has an unhappy marriage (FIL is great but an extreme workaholic), her kids dislike her (her kids all left and do not visit or call her). I feel badly for her but she creates her own misery. Unfortunately that includes hating me, mostly because I was not hand picked by her and no matter how much I want to scream at her, I just suck it up and kill her with kindness. Drives her batty! Lol. In all seriousness, I do want a better relationship with her but at this point it's better off where I stand for my sanity sake.

I think we have a pretty good relationship. It has definitely gotten better with time and I think a little better after LO.

My MIL is a sweet woman, but I don't know her very well. I've only met her twice. DH ADORES her though, and he misses her a bunch. I don't know how often we'll see her (once every couple of years) because she lives in South America. I doubt things will change much once we have LOs.
