My niece is 19 months and still doesn't have her ears pierced. My BIL doesn't want her to get them pierced until she asks for it. I on the other hand want her to get them pierced early because #1 she won't remember #2 less infection than if she was older.
My mom offered to go with her in October (when she's on Vacation) so Sienna will be about 5 months. If my mom didn't offer to do it, she probably would of gotten them pierced now. (3 months)

I had mine done at 5 but that was because the doctor did it while I was in surgery. Otherwise I think my parents would have waited until I was older. I actually have some pretty severe metal alleriges I hope DD didn't inherit (I can't even wear earings now) so we'll wait until she's old enough to ask.

I plan to pierce Harper's ears as early as I can....I want to do it early to shield her from remembering the pain!
My mom let me have mine done when I was old enough to ask, and I think I was in kindergarten. It hurt like a mutha!!!! I cried forever, and also at that age, I was more aware of them, so of course I messed with them all the time and they got infected. I was a nightmare with earrings according to my mom, and the worst part is I REMEMBER it all! She had my sister's ears pierced when she was a few months old, and my mom said she wished she would have done that with me because it was way less drama and way less infection. And my sister doesn't remember screaming her face off or being in pain!
So because of all that, I want to get Harper's pierced as soon as I can...But I still don't know just how early I can do it? I read that the pediatrician can pierce them....

Probably won't let her piErce them until she's old enough to take care of them. 14-16?

I got mine done when I was 10 and I asked for them. I'll do the same; it was a "double digits" rite of passage for me! That, and I'm a suck. I don't think I could stand to put holes in a baby's ears. I also wouldn't do it at kindergarten age for the exact reason that Joholler put forth. Kindergarteners are stubborn enough to not take care of them and I think the pain would be too traumatizing.

I don't know. This is a battle between my DH & family vs. me. They want to pierce her ears now (she is 4 months) and I want to wait. I had my ears pierced old fashion needle and thread style when I was 4 or 5. I don't remember the pain.

we're going to wait until she asks for it, and it can be a special treat for her. I got mine done at around 6 or 7 and it didn't hurt for more than for a second. They did get super infected because of metal allergies, but I don't remember any of that pain either.

I can't even count how many times I've been asked this and LO is 4 months old! I'm waiting until she's old enough to ask. I agree with @grace about the double-digit rite of passage

Wow, I didn't think so many of you would wait until she will ask. I got mine pierced as a baby and so glad my mom did it that way. I got a second hole when I was 14 and boy did it hurt. I definitely don't want that for my LO. Plus, if she doesn't want earrings, she can just take em out!
Her godmother bought her as a gift her first pair of pearls. I DON"T EVEN OWN PEARLS. i'm jealous! ha

@jholler25: Ditto! I agree, less infection at a younger age. That's why I'm set on getting Sienna's done early. When I got my second hole even when I cleaned it, they got infected and it hurt.

I don't like how babies look with pierced ears. I got mine pierced around 9 or 10 when I wanted them. She will get them when she asks and then earns them.
I had tons of piercings throughout my teenage years. The only one that ever got infected was my belly.

I'd like to get them pierced ASAP. I just need to convince DH. The original idea was to get them pierced following her 2 month shots but DH says he feels bad now. I had mine pierced as a baby and don't remember a thing. I also got a second hole at 18 and that was a pain! My cousins daughter has been wanting earrings for years but she hasn't gotten them done yet because she's afraid of the pain.

@jholler25: 12w is what I got when i asked (I checked when I was 16w along and convinced I was having a girl).
If I had a girl I would do it as soon as I could because they are so darn cute and because the baby won't remember.

Yeah, I don't mention that it has a lot to do with the fact also that babies with earrings are redonk cute:) I leave that out because I know that most people's opinion on the matter is to wait until they can ask, and I don't want to sound like the Child Abuse Mom - ha! But that's totally 50% of it!

I waited till I was 16. My mom and grandma never wanted theirs pierced. We'll wait until she asks in case she's like them and just doesn't want it.

I got my ears pierced when I was 7, and yes I cried but hardly and not for very long. I was old enough to take care of them myself (with some helpful reminders from my mom) and never had any issues. I got my second holes when I was 18 and it didn't hurt that bad, the worst part was sleeping on it.
I would never pierce an infants ears... idk that just doesn't sit right with me, it has nothing to do with me vs her taking care of them.

When they ask. It's really uncommon here to pierce an infants ears, it honestly didn't cross my mind.

He didn't want us focusing so much on our outer appearance..
Eh. We'll see when/if she starts asking for it. I'm sure HER dad won't want her getting them pierced early either.

I begged to get my ears pierced -- my parents made a big deal about waiting and then finally bestowed the privilege when I was 10. I wanted them sooo badly at that point that I didn't care how much it hurt. I think I'll probably do the same thing.

I had to wait until I was 12 and hated the fact that I had to wait. My grandmother got our ears pierced as a birthday present and my dad made her wait until we were 12. My other cousins were much younger, including some that were infants.
I'd like to pierce my LO's ears sooner rather than later, but I'm afraid she'll pull on them or something. I'm not sure if DH would go for it either. Guess I'll have to chat with him and see what he says. Yet another conversation sparked by WB.

I don't really like earrings on babies. If I have a daughter I'll wait until she is 10 or so to let her get her ears pierced. I had my ears pierced when I was 4. I developed an allergy to most metals and my holes closed up. I got the repierced when I was 14. I don't want any of my kids to have to deal with that.

I got mine pierced after I begged...I was in first grade. It hurt but I didn't cry and I took care if them and they never got infected. I got my second holes in 5th grade and never had an infection either. When I did additional piercings in my ear in high school they kept getting infected and so I let them close up.
I'll wait until she asks and promises to take good care of her ears

My parents made me wait until I was 10. At that point I didn't cry and was old enough to take care of them all on my own. I will probably do the same for my LO unless she begs earlier.

I would not pierce my LO's ears until she asked for them and was able to take care of them herself. I think I got mine done somewhere between 10-12. It was an awesome birthday present. Of course it hurt but that's a given. I don't think I was traumatized by it.

We pierced our LO's ears a little before she turned 4 months. My husband had to walk away and then was comepletely surprised when I told him she didnt even cry.
she just let out a little whimper and that was it. I was totally suprised! its been a month and they seem fine. Even when caring for them and cleaning them she never seemed to care!
I also had mine done when I was a baby.

I got my ears pierced as a baby so i wanted the same thing for my daughter. We got it done the day before she turned 6 months. She barely made a peep and its been healing pretty well.

In my family it is tradition to do it on their 1st birthday. If I have a daughter, I will likely go along with the tradition.

We're having a boy this time, but for any future girls I would wait until at least 10. I got mine when I turned 13.. don't remember it being a big deal pain-wise and I was old enough to take care of them. Maybe it is a regional thing, but I don't see many babies with pierced ears.. to be honest, it weirds me out a little. It makes me think of Toddlers & Tiaras!
