Curious, based on a comment from my 3.5 yo's preschool teacher. At what age could your LO write their name well enough that you could read it (even if it wasn't exactly *right* just yet)?

3.5. It was just her three letter nickname though.
Now at four she still can't do her full name.

around 3.5/4 with serious coaching. At 4.5 she can make all the letters independently, but still isn't always great about writing them in a line. If I posted a picture of it today, it's questionable whether or not you (not knowing her name) would clearly know what her name is....kind of depends on how interested she was in writing it at the moment.

A little after age 4. At 4.5 it's even more legible now, although it's still often a mix of upper and lower case letters. LO's name is 7 letters long; she would often do just the first 3 before she turned 4.

Ok this is all going along with what I thought was normal. She can occasionally make the letters with serious coaching, but very rarely does it alone and I doubt anyone could read it besides me. Her teacher mentioned that some of the older kids in the class had been for a while, as part of a brief discussion about kindergarten readiness. I started wondering if I should be letting her practice more or what but sounds normal.

LO can do a pretty good job of it now, he turned 4 in October, but we're also in OT for fine motor skills so they've been working with him to hold a crayon/marker better and he's getting much better!

E had zero interest in writing or learning letters until he started 4k in September. He could legibly write his name pretty quickly after, so right before 4.5.

M is not close. She can make an O and that's about it. She's definitely been improving with tracing letters but I think we're a ways off from being able to write her whole name. Her teacher has a poster up with all the kids who can spell their name and all the kids who can write their name. M is one of the youngest in her class and even still there are only 4-5 kids (out of 24) in the column who can write their name.

Hmm...I think a little before she turned 3? But, my older LOs name is only 4 letters long, and she was writing in all caps. She learned her capital letters pretty early and still struggles with lowercase at 3.5. I have done 0 teaching or coaching of lowercase levels. I think they've just started introducing them in pre-k.
She currently writes her name with all caps 75% of the time. If I verbally ask her to, she will attempt a capital M and then lowercase for the rest. Her caps are great...lowercase, not so great--they are frequently inverted or half confused with other letters, etc.
At her school, the kids have to sign in every morning and recently, the teacher added attempting their last names. Our last name is longer, so right now LO just does a few letters of her last name.

@Foodnerd81: In the 3 year range but she used capital letters. At 4.5 she is just now working on her lowercase letters. I have only just started to be more active about working with her on it. She won't start K til almost 6 so we had time though.

3, it was in all caps and her C was backwards. It was a testing point mid way through Kinder to write their first name in proper text with reasonable size and space.

@lawbee11: she has been spelling her name for ages- I don't even know how long. And she actually knows all her letters and sounds they make, like if I ask what a word starts with and emphasize the first letter, she gets it right about 75% of the time. But she doesn't write them.

Maybe 3.5, but for some reason I can't recall now, we started learning letters very early and day care also started teaching the kids letters at 3 because they have a 3-5 group all doing the same stuff.

Mine could do her nickname at around 3 years and just started doing her full name recently (3 year and 3 months). She could spell her name (and type it on a computer actually) for a long time before she could actually write it.

I can't completely remember, but i think it was around 3.5 for his nickname (Ty) and 4 for his full name...4.5 for his last name too.

4, completely legible, first and last name, 15 letters. It's only because I taught K and I saw so many kids who couldn't write, or even recognize their name or letters in their name. I'm lucky though that he has the pencil grip down and was motivated to learn.

Oh man, I'm just impressed when my 3 year old can spell his name out loud. Sometimes he confuses e and the c and says them backwards.

She could spell it by 3 but couldn't write it until around her 4th birthday.

My LO is 3.5 and has zero interest in writing, even though he loves talking about letters and letter sounds. His name is 7 letters. He knows that it starts with an S, and he knows a couple of other letters in his name, but he doesn't know how to spell it.

I think right at 3. She's always been interested in letters though and I always worked with her. She started preschool at 3.5 and she was one of the few in her class who could write her name.

DD is 3 and can write her first name plus M for mommy and D for daddy.

3.5. One was almost illegible and the other was pretty neat. Now at a couple months shy of 4, they can both write their names pretty legibly, but I credit their 3-year old preschool because I definitely didn't work with them on it.

I can't remember! I would think it was sometime when he was in the 4s class, so he probably was closer to 4.

Right at 3.5yo. I was surprised by seeing LOs name in scribble style writing on daycare artwork. I remember the age because it was just before she went to preschool.

C can write the first two letters of her name but is nowhere close to spelling the whole thing. Poor thing has 9 letters and it isn't phonetically easy, lol.
I'm a primary literacy coach and writing their name is a skill we like to have our Kindergartners come in with, so I'm not too worried. Even then, probably only 50% of our Ks can write their name when they enter in September.

4.
Writing is extremely developmental! I have worked with 5-6 year olds who cannot write their names, so I never worry about it.

right before she turned 4 she could write her nickname, but she refuses to even try to write her full name because "that's not what she goes by." This girl is so stubborn.
pineapple / 12053 posts
she can kinda do it with coaching and tries on her own, but barely readable at 4. i'd assume she could do it by the end of this year, so before 5.
