Properly playing, like making car sounds when playing with cars, not until after age 2.
I was more into sensory discovery, so I tried to choose toys and objects that had different textures, colors, etc in the first year.

C is 7 weeks and has only recently started staring at get toys, like the dangling ones on the play mat. At 3 weeks she didn't even notice them.

Sometime around 2 months (ish) she was interested in looking at toys and following them with her eyes. Right at 3 months she started trying to bat at them. Now at 18 months she fully plays with her toys, has favorites, uses them for their intended purpose, etc., but it's a long time coming to get to that point developmentally.

I realized I started with toys kind of late. But at 6 months, went through a toy-buying phase, and she seemed to be interested in all of them! I think 3-4 months she started really batting and grabbing at her toy bar, activity gym, stroller toys.

She reached out and grabbed a toy for the first time when she was 12 weeks old.
Around 4 months she became obsessed with Sofie and started swatting at things that made noise, showing preference with some toys over others.
