When did your LO lose their cord? Ours looks like it's about to fall off and has a seriously stink, with oozey bites at the base. I called our pediatric advice nurse and she said that it was all normal, to call if anything changes, we get red streaks, etc.

I think at 7 or 8 days. It continued to bleed a bit after the stump fell off.

We used alcohol wipes twice a day per the pediatricians recommendation and it fell off about two weeks while he slept after oozing and bleeding a bit. Never smelled though.

2 weeks. We didn't put anything on it and it never smelled.

DS's fell off when he was 13 days old. It bled a little once he lost it but the on-call nurse said it was normal. I just made sure I kept cleaning it until it was completely healed.

Right at a week old. And I remember the smell and oozes - I think it was because I wasn't cleaning it enough! Use a q-tip to clean the base several times a day - I totally missed that memo. oops.

@Mrs. Pen: Yeah, we didn't get that memo until last night, when I called the advice nurse. She asked if anybody had told us how to clean it and didn't seem surprised when I said no. I used q-tips and water last night, followed up with a little alcohol to help dry it out.

My son's didn't fall off until about 7 weeks. He had to have some silver stuff put on the base to help dry it out. It never had any stick issues or oozing. It just wasn't ready to come off.

AT our hospital they told us the alcohol thing is old-school and studies show that the cord does just as well if you switch to a real bath, rather than the sponge bath, right away.

@MaisyMay: yeah I felt sooo guilty. I think I remembered hearing something about that - but like there wasn't enough to remember as it was! I used warm water and a q tip and a tea steep that my midwife gave me. They said it should be cleaned at every feeding!!

I think it is funny, DD was born in NY. We were told not to touch it. DS was born in TX, we were told to use alcohol swabs. For both, I didn't touch it. I think DS's ended up falling off by 2 weeks old. DD's started to smell before hers came off, I even called the doc and they weren't concerned about the smell....

We never cleaned ours. It fell off on day 2 or 3. (Actually it fell off when my BFF was holding my daughter and got stuck to my friend's dress. Poor girl!!)

She was 7 days old. It had a hard time closing up though, and it formed a polyp, she almost needed surgery but thankfully it took care of itself!

It was oozing and had a gnarly stink until it fell off at 2 weeks.

Our LOs took a while. She was over three weeks. We cleaned it daily with alcohol and it never smelled or oozed.

9 days. We cleaned it with alcohol 3x/day. After it fell off there was a little scab for about 5 more days

About a week. I was surprised it fell off so soon. It didn't smell and we didn't clean it either. No one told us to. We gave her real baths too - the pediatrician said it was fine to and that avoiding getting it wet was an old way of doing things.
