She was on the cusp of hitting her 4 month sleep regression (she hit it around 3.5 months). The only way she would nap was if I laid her on her tummy. We started that around 3 months...I don't know when it started happening at night. I think maybe when we stopped swaddling & moved out of the bassinet around 5 months

He didn't start sleeping on his belly until we moved him out of the Magic Sleepsuit and into a sleepsack at 8-9 months. At that point, he could roll both ways very easily, so we let him do his thing. He's almost exclusively a stomach/side sleeper.

Mine is three months old. I am planning to wait until he can roll from back to belly and back again.
Since he can roll from his back to his right side and back again, I currently let him go to sleep on his side. If he's sleepy and I put him in his crib on his side, he usually stays asleep whereas he would wake up more often if I put him down on his back.

As soon as her head control was good enough to turn side to side...she's slept on belly since prob at least 9 weeks.

@Mrs. Sunshine: That's where we are. He takes his naps on his belly, but wee are always in the same room keeping an eye on him. He sleeps swaddled and on his back at night, but He is protesting the swaddle now but squirms himself to death and can't settle into sleep without it. So I flipped him on his belly and he instantly relaxed and went to sleep. I don't know what to do.
He's 3.5 months

I let my kids sleep on their stomachs when they were able to roll into that position after I put them on their back. It was around 3.5 months for DS1 and 5 months for DS2.

@Danizaur: there were a few times where I let her at night but she was usually okay with the swaddle...she slept in out room at that point so I just kept checking on her. I felt conflicted as well. Personally, I think everything will be okay if you let him sleep on his belly BUT as a mom, my general rule of thumb is that if it feels wrong, then don't do it. I know that's not that helpful. I'm sorry!
ETA: I was always afraid to wake her just to flip her so I never did. That being said, she never slept more than two hours at a time at that point anyway.

When she rolled herself. We went through a week or so where she would scream when she rolled from back to tummy and got stuck, to te point where we had to go and physically hold her down on her back to keep her from flipping over. Then she realized she liked it better and has been a tummy sleeper ever since. We had already ditched the swaddle and sleep suit, so it must have been between 4-5 months. Didn't start putting her down on her tummy until much later.

When she was able to roll onto her belly. I think it was around 5/5.5 months.

When she flipped on her own, around 5.5 months. Once she figured it out, she never slept on her back again, even though I always lay her down on her back.

Around 3 months. My mom suggested trying to lay him down like that, and it was like magic - he fell asleep right away, and slept for hours. I was nervous about if for a few nights, but he started rolling himself a few weeks later so that ended the debate.

Only when she rolled herself. Around 4.5 months. I never put her down on her belly.

Mine started rolling onto her belly around 5 months and from about 6 months on I just started putting her down that way because she sleeps better like that. Still a belly sleeper at 1yr!

When dd started rolling (and could roll from her belly to her back) I let her sleep on her belly. She's still a belly sleeper at 20 months.

@swedishfish: This. We had a few paranoid nights where I kept rolling him back since he could only roll in one direction at that point, but he does so much better on his stomach! So eventually I gave up and stopped moving him when he ended up on his belly.

I am in the minority on this. I put him on his belly for naps at three weeks, because he could already turn his head from side to side. He definitely sleeps better and it seems to help his gassiness.
I waited much longer with my first. But I read all the research on SIDS and I think the real risk is overstated.

When she could roll both ways by herself....can't remember. Maybe 6 or so months.

At 5-months when she refused to sleep on her back anymore. I initially freaked out, but everytime I put her on her back she rolled over to her tummy again.

I unswaddled her around 5 months cause she was starting to roll. She started sleeping on her tummy around that time. The first few times I walked in and saw her on her tummy I Panicked and flipped her over, but I learned to relax. At 10 months she's all over the place in her crib but usually sleeps on tummy.

She just started rolling onto her belly at night this past week (she's 6 months). I'm not about to wake her up to flip her over! She's been sleeping on her side for several weeks, though, and it still seems to be her preferred position. I read that SIDS research shows a higher risk for babies who are put down on their stomachs but not for those who can get there on their own, so I lay her on her back but am trying not to stress when she does her own thing afterward.

When he started rolling at 4 months we took him out of the swaddle Nd let him sleep however he wanted.

I tried to get her to sleep on her belly when we were desperate during 6 mo sleep regression. It didn't work. Now at 8 months she sleeps in her side, but I wouldn't move her if she rolled to her belly to sleep (and wouldn't have earlier as long as she did it herself). I actually have a pediatrician friend who let her daughter sleep in her belly from birth. I don't think I would have been comfortable doing that until mine had good head control, but her daughter slept like a champ.

8 weeks. I was heavily conflicted about it, but his reflux was so bad and we had a couple of scary incidents of him choking on it. It made a world of difference, but only for his comfort with the reflux. I wouldn't have switched him until he was able to put himself into that position himself.

Early like 2-3 weeks he slept so much better and both grandmas were totally for it and had raised us that way. I also read the sids research and it's not that scary. We told our dr at an appt and all she said was I have to tell you that it increases the sids risk but do whatever you have to so that you all get sleep.

When she could roll over, around month 4. I always put her down on her back but she would flip right over. She was in a crib full time at 5 months

When she could roll both ways consistently. She rolled back to belly first, and then would freak out in her crib when she couldn't get back over. We used rolled up blankets to keep her from rolling over until she learned to roll back a couple weeks later. At 16 months, she still sleeps on her belly most of the night.

Only when he wasn't being swaddled anymore and could roll himself. Even then we always laid him on his back.
The SIDS rate plummeted in the US after the "Back to Sleep" campaign.

We allow LO one supervised nap on his tummy a day. He will sleep for 2.5 hours as opposed to 30 minutes on his back. So frustrating....He is 4 months now, and we've been doing this since he was little. Not sure why he can sleep on his back at night (relatively well) but not at all during the day. Once he can flip over himself, I am going to let him stomach sleep whenever he wants.

We started at 8 weeks. Originally we were just going to do it for naps since I could watch him the whole time, but after we started naps he wouldn't sleep on his back or the rnp anymore so we went ahead and put him on his belly for nighttime too!

Around 4-5 months when he was rolling more often to that position on his own and we took him out of the swaddle for good.

For our first LO, it wasn't until she put herself on her belly, maybe around 10 months?
With LO2, she started sleeping on her belly super early, around 3 weeks or so. She hated being swaddled and sleeping on her back just wasn't happening, no matter what angle we tried. She had amazing head control from the start, and was picking her head up and turning it from side to side easily by three weeks, so I did my research and eventually decided I was comfortable with her sleeping on her belly. It worked a treat and she has been a brilliant sleeper since then.
I know the info on Safe Sleeping, and I know some people are appalled that I would let my infant sleep on her belly, but I've done my research and am comfortable with our decision. She is in our room though, which helps me feel more comfortable with it, I don't know that I would do it if she were in her room.
ETA: LO is 4 months old now and always flips herself to her belly as soon as I put her on her back anyway, so I think she'd be a belly sleeper by now regardless of which way I put her down!
