When LO was about 7 months, I think. He was tall and seemed a bit cramped. We got the Britax Marathon. Love it, easy to install, great seat. EXCEPT it's not the best choice for tall kids, and I wish I'd known it at the time. He's just about at the height limit for rear-facing and I either have to turn him now (he's 22 months) or get a new seat that lets him rear-face for a bit longer.

With DD we moved her when she turned one. With DS we moved him sooner, maybe 10 months old? It was because he is SO big!
Both are Britax

We moved DD at 9 months because she had maxed out the height of her infant seat. We use the Eveflo Triumph 65.
DD is 7 months and we are talking about moving him soon because he is very close to the max height on the infant seat. We will likely use DD's convertible and move her to a highback booster.

Right now - 11.5 months. He hasn't maxed out height or weight on the infant carrier yet - he's probably 18 lbs and maybe 28 inches or so? We went with the Britax Marathon.
ETA: I resisted for a few months because I have to haul him and my work stuff and his daycare stuff up 2 flights of stairs to our condo....bucket seat seems easier, but we'll see how this week goes with that!

We moved P at 10 months bc she was starting to looked cramped, she still had a couple inches before hitting the max though. We got the Combi Coccoro & love it!!! P is petite though so even though the max rear-facing height isn't as high on some I don't foresee P hitting it any time soon, definitely not before age 2.

10 months, I think. Britax Marathon. She still fits in the infant seat, but it's easier to get her in and out of the convertible now.

4.5 months. He was at 17 lbs and way too heavy in the infant seat. Britax Boulevard.

Subscribing to this!
People with the Britax Marathon...do you have big cars? I have a small car (Honda Insight) wondering if it will fit OK in a small sedan.

We just purchased the Britax Advocate for LO. He just turned 8 months, and we are planning to install it within the next month or so, so probably around the 9 month mark.

Subscribing. There is no way j is staying in that infant seat much longer

LO will be switching between a convertible car seat and infant seat from the very beginning, because of day care drop of logistics. We got her a Graco My Size 70 Convertible car seat, and it's going in a truck.

at 8 months we have two convertible seats. The first one which we love is the Britax Marathon 70 G3. we LOVE this seat.
Then we also have the Graco My Ride 65 in our second car. It is just ok but I dont really like it as much as the britax

We haven't switched yet, but will soon, probably. I think we're going to go with the Diono Radian, because it has a slim profile. Trying to think long-term since this should be the last car seat we have to buy him. I want to make sure we can fit multiple seats in the backseat of our Jeep.

@allison: that's why I was thinking a diono vs a britax - all I hear about is "3 across!" We only have 1 kid right now, but thinking ahead!
We are looking for a convertible right now even though L is only 3 months bc of daycare pickup logistics like @Bookworm.

11 months, 21ish pounds, we went with the Graco My Ride 65. I waited pretty much as long as I could, since I loved the convenience of the infant seat. The Graco seat is huge and sturdy, he always looks so comfortable!

@Rescuemom10: I can't speak to the Britax, but one of the reasons we went with the Combi Coccorro is because it's ideal for compact cars (we have a Prius). So far, so good!

I lied. We have the Boulevard, not the Marathon! Oops!

DS1 was 12 months in a Sunshine Kids Radian XTSL (now Diono), kept rear facing until 3 years old. DS2 came home from the hospital in a Graco MyRide 65 and is still rear facing in it at 15 months.

We just move her up last week. She is 8 months old today. He was just too heavy to carry around in the infant seat and it took up a lot of space. We went with a britax marathon. I love it!

We will be moving him sometime in teh next months (so around 7/7.5 months). He's only about 15lbs now at 6 months, but we're getting a car a figure we might as well get a convertible carseat now. We're also leaning toward a britax, diono radian, or the combi coccorro (no idea if that's the right name!).

Our Britax Advocate and Pavilion just came in yesterday! So excited to get it installed.
DS is almost 5.5 months and well over 17 lbs 26 inches!

I bit the bullet and ordered a Diono Radian and an angle adjuster. It's coming Friday, yay!

Also, the Diono Radian XRT is really cheap on Amazon right now, and the Britax Boulevard is $239.99 on diapers.com.

@Koolbreeze: is the radian one you have the one with the adjustable head rests? If so, was it worth the extra $$ for it or would one without the extra padding work?

I'm so glad you posted this! I've been thinking the same thing. My son is almost 3 months and I've been wanting to know when we should switch to a convertible carseat and what is the best one to get.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
8 months of age, because I couldn't manage carrying my son and the infant seat up and down three flights of stairs any longer. I know I could have still used the bucket but left it strapped in, but I hated it so much I never wanted to see it again.
clementine / 896 posts
@birdofafeather: not worth it IMO. The head wings slide down and when they're younger they can't be used anyways. DS1 is almost 4 and forward facing and never rest his head on them.

We went with the Britax Boulevard when she was 7 or 8 months, I got sick of lugging the infant seat around.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
Just did this at 7.5 months and went with the Britax Advocate. (Basically Boulevard with extra "stuff" on the outside.)

We moved DS around 7.5 months b/c he's so tall. We got the Graco MyRide 70. It was on sale at Target and he loves it. Way roomier than his infant seat and it got great ratings.

@scg00387: You've got a healthy one too! H was 16lbs at 4.5 mos and the ped said she is a "big kid" and I think we are going to have to get the convertible in the next few weeks!
pomelo / 5524 posts
@Mrs. Yoyo: This is the seat that we got as well! Glad to hear you like it aside from the height requirement! LO is 7 months, but he's a shrimper, so we're still in the infant carrier.
nectarine / 2797 posts
We moved her at 9 months - she was just under 20 lbs but about to max out height wise. We got a Diono Radian, love it!
pomelo / 5093 posts
At 19 months I'm starting to think about it. My tiny child is close to maxing out the height of her infant seat.
honeydew / 7687 posts
@PrincessBaby: Oh yes.. he is solid! He is soooo much happier in the convertible and I don't blame him!
