LO has his two bottom teeth, but I don't think they're allll the way out yet. When did you start cleaning your LO's teeth? Also, is it the last thing I should be doing before bed? Right now we do bath, nurse, book, bed, so would I wipe them off after I nurse? Or is it okay to wipe them after his dinner (which is before his bath)?

We started with the little gummy brush thing (baby's first toothbrush) when she got her first teeth. Now, at 14 months, she uses the kid toothbrush with kid toothpaste on it after bath, before bedtime. She nurses after the brushing but I'm too lazy to get back up after nursing, brush, then go back to the chair to read and sing.

@mediagirl: so did you worry very much about actually cleaning her teeth in the beginning or was it mainly just to get her used to a toothbrush?

We started right away, before he had teeth. We got him this banana toothbrush which he loved. Now that he has teeth we have a starter toothbrush and toothpaste. LO LOVES brushing his teeth.

We started right away as well. We brush his teeth in the bath every night and he really loves it. He does still nurse before bed though.

I started cleaning her mouth and gums daily before she had teeth and once she had teeth I clean twice a day; once in the morning and once right before bed. I started with the finger brush and the earths best tooth and gum cleanser

We started really brushing his teeth around 10-11 months old. I used a finger brush for awhile, but he kept on biting me. Now, we use a little toothbrush with strawberry/banana toothpaste. His teeth are brushed before bedtime or during the routine.

@hilsy85: Yeah, I never used a washcloth. I never worried too much about it until she started eating more solids. While she was just breastfeeding, I didn't brush them. Now that she is mostly eating solid foods, I worry and use the real toothbrush. It's hard before they can do it themselves to keep up with it!! Also, my lo HATES having her teeth brushed. HATES it.

We started brushing her teeth when they came in with a kiddie toothbrush (with water.) I do it in the mornings & I also do it at night after bath (but before bottle.) I want her to get in the habit of having her teeth brushed.

We started when her teeth came in. We do it after her bath while her arms are wrapped in a towel. She doesn't really fight it, she just want to grab my hand and chew. We use a finger brush.

Great minds think alike?! I was going to make a post about this this morning. LO is 7 months old, and his 5th tooth came in yesterday. I bought a toothbrush that came with some toothpaste.... but wasn't sure what to do.

i started with a washcloth in the bath when LO was a few weeks old to get him used to something rubbing against his gums. at 7 months, i still mostly use the washcloth. i've given him a baby toothbrush recently that he chews on, but i haven't actually "brushed", or used toothpaste. he has 2 bottom teeth. we do this during his nighttime bath.
ETA: but we do nurse again before bed (after the bath/"teeth brushing")

@coastmama: Just a small amount. It's okay to swallow since babies don't get the whole teeth brushing thing yet. LO likes to grab the brush and gum it a bit. I figure that it gets him used to it, etc.

We've been brushing since probably 5 months. I wanted to make it a part of the routine. We have a silicone green sprouts brush and use spry paste once a night, should probably start in the morning too I guess!

we've been doing it for a couple months now. we have the 2-pack MAM brushes. she holds the little one while I use the long one. we take turns and sing a song while we do it. my ped told me just water until she's older..less mess, so hey, whatevs

No teeth yet at 9 months, but she loves to chew on her silicone toothbrush every night after bath time!

@hilsy85: Yes, we ordered one for infants. I think it's slightly smaller and softer than the ones for older kids/toddlers with more teeth. We also bought infant specific toothpaste.

We started brushing his teeth when his first two teeth came in around 7 months, but to be honest, we were bad about remembering to do so. Now at 11 months, LO only has 3 teeth, but it's part of our nightly routine after his bath. We use an infant toothbrush without toothpaste.

Our ped told us to start right at 6 months when he got his first teeth. She said a washcloth or baby toothbrush with just water is fine.
