At what age did you/will you start inviting kids to your LO's birthday? If your LO goes to daycare, at what age do the kids want to start inviting their friends?

We're planning to invite the other kids in her daycare class to her 2nd birthday. She's gone to a 2nd birthday party for one of her daycare classmates as well.

LO's 2nd birthday had most of his "Friends"--kids he has regular playdates with and moms that I am friends with. I think 3 or 4 would be our first "friends only" party where I don't feel pressure to invite aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

I will have to do a family party every year, including kids like 35-40 people. So we are waiting till 3 to do a friend party. She went to a 2nd bday party for a classmate this weekend and she had a blast!

Both girls will have had their first "party" for their 3rd birthday. Ellie had 3 friends come to her 3rd birthday. Lorelei will likely have one friend and his infant sister (she loves both of them). I'm really low-key for that sort of stuff anyhow. We always have a budget of under $100 and don't do much decorating stuff. I make the cake, and we usually do some sort of messy or fun craft as a party favor. Once the friend parties start, they have two celebrations: one with just family, so about 6 people including us for dessert on their actual birthday, and one with friends.

@autumnlove: @Smurfette: @Andrea: were the daycare /preschool parties at home or a venue?
@SugarplumsMom: I would love to invite daycare friends to DD 1's 3rd birthday. A lot of the kids she's known them since she was an infant and talks about them constantly. But a) DH thinks it's weird to invite them to our home because we don't know the parents b) we likely won't have a big party this year because I'm unemployed so a outside party is definitely out.

@regberadaisy: I don't think we'll do a kids party this year either. DH just told me that the local custom is to just have the kids over sans parents! I don't even think that's possible with 3 yr olds. I'm guessing she'll have to wait until she's 5? Lol.

@SugarplumsMom: where are you located? And yeah, I'm not comfortable with dropping my kids off at a party at age 3!
