I started wearing a belly band early (8-10 weeks), but didn't switch to maternity pants until 14 weeks. Both times. And both times I wish I made the switch earlier, haha.

I switched to maternity jeans in week 12 or 13 I think. Other pants a little later, because they were less uncomfortable on my belly.

Almost immediately because I had such terrible bloat - they were more comfortable and the dresses were better at hiding it than my regular clothes.
As you have probably noticed, maternity clothes come in two types - those that have side ruching that scream "I'm pregnant!" and are really hard to pull off until you have a belly, and those that are just cut bigger in the stomach area. The second type get harder to wear into 3rd tri, but are *great* for hiding 1st tri bloat.

During my first pregnancy I didn't switch into maternity until around 20-22 weeks. This time around I am making the switch a bit earlier (18-19) but still trying to put it off as along as possible. I found that the "new" maternity clothes are fun for the first month or so, but then you realize that you're stuck with the same 3 pairs of pants for the next 3 months

The first time I took forever, this time first trimester. It's so much more comfy and might as well get your money's worth out of the clothes.

With my first pregnancy, around 13 weeks. With my second...I never stopped wearing maternity clothes after my first...(I was 6 months pp when I got pregnant)

Early both times. Crazy bloat, short torso, and an over eager ute.
Both times I couldn't stand anything remotely snug on my belly early on.

Week 20 for pregnancy 1 and week 10 for pregnancy 2.

Pants 8-9 weeks! The belly band didn't work great for me with work pants.

@Snowdrop: 15 weeks. I wish I had worn them earlier...they helped make me look pregnant and not just bloated. I even started a thread about it here:

I voted 11-13 weeks. I only bought 2 tops and I don't reaaally need to wear them but they are so comfy!

I think week 14 was when I gave in and wore maternity jeans full time. I tried earlier and the pants just didn't stay up well so I did the hair tie through the button hole trick till then.

My friend gave me some hand me down maternity pants, and I tried them on around 8 weeks just to see if they fit. I ended up loving them, so I just started wearing them all the time haha. I probably could have waited, but I figured, why not?

I had horrible morning sickness and my entire abdomen was very sensitive, anything that was too tight made me feel worse. I started wearing maternity pants right away (around 8-10 weeks) both times, it was so comfortable! I also carried both pregnancies very low.

Pants right at 10 weeks. I got away with regular shirts until probably 22 weeks?

A lot of you are started quite early then! I seem to be ok (at 8 weeks) during the day but in the evening the bloating is terrible. I'm tempted to buy one pair of underbelly jeans just for comfort at times like this....
Luckily I have a uniform so work clothes won't be an issue till I can't fasten my dress.

Hair ties and belly band from around 7wks till maybe 14, then just stretchy skirts and larger sizes of things... Finally bought actually maternity pants/tops around 20wks. I wouldn't do it differently, it all worked fine. I wear scrubs to work, though, so never really needed to look professional. With a different job I probably would have had to do maternity shopping around 12wks, but I showed really early.

Around 14 weeks I bought maternity jeans. I got by with regular shirts/leggings until around 30 weeks.

@autumnlove: Me too. Pretty sure I'm the same size now at 10 weeks with LO#2 as I was at 20 weeks with LO#1. This just happened in the last few days too!

13 weeks! But at 31 weeks, I can still wear non-maternity tops and normal leggings.

Even though maternity clothes are comfortable at first and its fun to have them show off the slightest "bump" I would highly recommend trying to wear the clothes you have and can wear while they still fit (particularly in that 10-18 week range). By 30-32 weeks even maternity clothes start getting tight and regular clothes are way out of the option.

Didn't vote in the poll because I was in maternity pants by 11 weeks but I didn't start wearing maternity tops until maybe 22 weeks? I didn't really show until then but was too bloated to wear regular pants.

@BakerBee: I know! Its amazing how they seem SO comfortable at first, like why don't we wear these all the time. And then at the end you are like, get this band off!

E was my third pregnancy so I blew up pretty damn fast. Maternity pants pretty early on, maybe week 8/9. I'll probably do the same next time and just bust them out as needed.

11-13, not because of my belly but because my boobs were huge and stretching out my normal shirts.

15-16 weeks my friend gave me a bunch of her maternity clothes and it was life changing! I still fit into my old clothes until about 19 weeks or so and then gave up completely around 20 weeks.

In bella band around 10 weeks with my first and switched to maternity pants around 12 weeks. Shirts I could get away with long flowy tops until around 16 weeks.
Second pregnancy was in full on maternity bottoms at 8 weeks and maternity tops at 9-10.

I started on maternity pants and used the bella band at 9 weeks, but didn't move to maternity tops until 16-17 weeks! (first pregnancy)

@Snowdrop: My bloating is really bad at night too! I'm going to try to get pants next week and will let you know if I feel more comfy in them in the evenings. Thanks for starting this thread!
pear / 1846 posts
@namaste: oh yes, keep me updated, I'm worried they might not hold up or something but feeling sick/bloated and wearing normal jeans is not nice!

I tried on a pair of maternity shorts from target=heaven!
Didn't realize just how much I truly was "popping" out, feels so good not too have the button digging into me
pomegranate / 3393 posts
I never got maternity pants, I might get some next time! I started wearing maternity tops around 19 weeks, but never exclusively. It was fun experimenting and seeing which of my regular clothes fit!

@Mrs.Panda: yes but it is far too big round the waist for me, I should have had it taken in really. The size smaller is tight on my bum (I have a big bum and broad shoulders) so plenty of room for a baby belly
What are you going to do about your uniform? Do you wear scrubs in the US?
nectarine / 2358 posts
@Snowdrop: that is so interesting. We wear scrubs here but at my hospital you can wear a dress. It's just nobody does haha. I take that back, we did have a nun who worked with us who wore a skirt and top, but that's it I got some maternity scrub pants and a button down scrub top that I wear open with a t shirt underneath. Pretty comfy!
pear / 1846 posts
@Mrs.Panda: most of us wear proper uniforms but in theatre or critical care you wear scrubs, I love them but as I'm doing my masters and moving around a lot I'm mainly in my uniform. Scrubs are like wearing PJs
