Some people (especially my parents) love to tell me all the things my DS will do/be interested in because "he's a boy." It's all stereotypical male activites/interests like pretending to swordfight, being interested in trains/cars/construction equipment, playing superheros, being incredibly fearless/rambunctious, etc... DS is almost a year, and I feel like babies are really gender-less for at least the first year. He has not exhibited any of these interests or behaviors yet, but they might start soon? When did your boy starting doing typical "boy" things? And did you introduce them, or did they just pick these things up on their own?

My nephew has been obsessed with cars and construction stuff since way before a year. My sister def didn't introduce it he just loves that stuff. The rest, he may be a little more rambunctious or fearless but nothing crazy, and he just turned two. But he can point to every different truck, construction vehicle, etc for sure.

@Foodnerd81: Wow that's early! I feel like DS has pretty much the same interests DD had at this age. But neither of them had very specific interests as early as your nephew!!

LO is almost 11 months and although he hasn't shown interest in any particular kind of toy, he is utterly fearless. He's had quite a few bumps on his head already and gives me mini heart attacks on a daily basis.

DS only recently started showing clear interest in "boy" stuff at 17-18 mo. He will say "vroom" and run the car around on the floor. Before that, it was all the same too him, his sisters girls stuff or anything stereotypically boy. He does love DD's princess laptop though, but mainly it's the mechanical aspect of opening and closing it.
Eta: he started climbing and being more fearless earlier than DD. Going down the slide head first, climbing on top of low shelves around 13-14 months. -
I was wondering the same thing, I don't really see a difference at this point in stereotypical interests (14 months). He had a few trucks, but they aren't interesting like blocks are right now. He's pretty cautious about standing and cruising, but will lift a leg like he's going to climb on top of the coffee table, thankfully he hasn't yet!

LO started really getting into cars and trucks and trains around 14 or 15 months. He's 20 months now and full-on obsessed with trains, which his dad is encouraging by buying him every single thomas character.

@Honeybee: Well, he lived in NYC where there were giant construction vehicles everywhere, so I think that was part of it-- he was more interested in the real things than the toys. And I don't mean to say he didn't like girl stuff-- when given the choice of a superhero cape or a tiara, tutu and wand, he definitely chose the tutu and tiara (which makes for an awesome picture to show future girlfriends).

My son didn't start playing with typical boys toys til around 2z prior to that, everything was pretty gender neutral. But now he's full on ino superheroes, sword fighting and other active typical boys stuff. He learned all of that in school from his friends. My daughter, who's younger, plays with all the typical boys things because of her older brother.

My LO is about to turn 2, and I feel that the last couple of months have developed into a full obsession with all vehicles that move. He can spend hours playing with his simple Ikea train set, and he will point out every single vehicle on the road. He hears an airplane outside and gets so excited. I think he has always been fascinated with wheels and how they move. I don't think I have done anything to encourage him to play with more stereotypical boy toys (quite the opposite actually -- he has a tea set and a play kitchen).

I don't have any experience with my own little one but as a two/three year old girl I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I had a frieze going round my room with realistic illustrations, the names and pronunciations of each. My parents saw an interest in that when I was two and decided to give me the resources to foster that. I also had my own clothesline because I loved helping mum with chores. I don't think you need to worry about introducing ideas - you'll see what they start to enjoy and then you can find things that will help them enjoy those passions!

@yin: Haha, we have a play kitchen too. He plays with it, but often that "play" involves washing and stowing his trains in the kitchen. Oy.

around a year and a half charlie got into thomas trains. before that his toys were gender neutral like a play kitchen, doll stroller.... i guess those might be considered girl toys, but i never thought of them that way.
his personality was definitely more of a boy -- climbing, fearless, etc. compared to cautious olive!
