My mom was born in Japan and came over after she married my dad. My dad was born in America, and his relatives came over from Germany (through England) and Ireland in the 1800s or 1900s.
I was born in Taiwan and came to America when I was around Charlie's age (3 1/5 or so).
Haha not sure what that makes me... but I identify with a lot of elements of the immigrant experience. Had an accent, had to adjust to America, felt different and worked hard to survive. I feel a deep appreciation to America and very much still believe in the American dream!!
When did your family immigrate? Do you feel close to the immigrant experience?
We feel the same way about my husband's side. His dad really has NO connection whatsoever to his German heritage and he's only first generation. I think it's so sad. We were in Germany during our honeymoon and we desperately wanted to go visit the village that his name comes from. Alas, we could not find it out. But his cousin recently did ancestry.com so I think when we take our kids we will make a visit.
