Just curious - when did your LO say his/her first word? (mama/baba/dada whatever it was) Our quiet little baba is true to form so far and hasn't said a word!

Maybe 10 months? I have to double check in her baby book. It might've been earlier but I didn't really count dada. I prefer to think her first word was dog.

7-8m. He was an early talker. At 17m, he won't stop talking and says little 2 word sentences.

The first word we actually counted was at 9.5 months- 'woof'. Then 'tickle' was at about 10 months.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: OMG our LO's first word was woof and then tickle too but not until around 12/13 months. How weird!!

@travellingbee: no way?! That is hilarious! I thought she was so bizarre for not saying mama or dada.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: us too!! Although we have a dog that he is obsessed with so I guess it makes sense... And Tickle came from us reading the book Tickle time with him which was/is his favorite. So funny!

DS babbled dadadada babababa alot from a young age, but never associated with anything. He started making mmm sounds when he was 10 months and mum mum came shortly after that. He says mama occasionally, but mostly just mum mum when he's hungry/thirsty.

9 months was "uh oh". At 11 months we also have "hi" and "hot". She has said dada a few times but not enough for us to actually qualify it as a word.

DD was an early talker because of her cousins. her first word was dada

Around 8 months. Her first word was "up" ...we always said that when we picked her up

5 months, it was our anniversary and she looked right at me and said "Mama!" She's quite the talker at 14 months. My husband was a very early talker so maybe that's where she got it from.

Probably around 10 months. He started walking around 12 months. So speech came before walking.

She had dada and hi consistently around seven months. She also had a noise for the dog, but I refuse to acknowledge that her first word was panting like the dog.

@oliviaoblivia: Jack has a special noise for the dog too, it's a sound he never makes unless Maya is near him.. so weird!
He is 9 months this week and says "Baba" "Dada" "Mom" and "Umm/yum" but I wouldn't really say that any of them are on purpose or with any meaning behind them.. maybe they are though?
He says "woah" quite often but i'm trying to figure out if he's doing it on purpose..and I think he actually might be? So,
Woah @ 8.5 months

How do you know when a word counts? Is it when they say it unprompted and in the correct context? If we are talking about things, if it's a word LO recognises and can say, she will copy it...for example Tree, Car, Pear and some colours and other people's names. I'm not sure she really understands what they mean though.
She's almost 10 months and I would say she's been doing that for a couple of weeks.

This thread is depressing me. LO is 11 months and has no words yet. LO will imitate words (mama, dada, book), but not spontaneously say words with meaning. Pretty much everything is "da."

She started saying "dada" intentionally at 8 months. Before that it was just "dadababalala." She did call both of us dada for a little while!

@mdf106: Don't be depressed! My LO is 17m and still isn't much of a talker at all. I know it's hard not to compare. It's hard to see my friends' kids that are around Sadie's age talking in small sentences or counting or whatever, while Sadie is still calling the bath a "ba" or not even saying "please." BUT... Theodore Roosevelt said it best: "Comparison is the thief of joy"

thanks all for responding and voting - lots of early talkers, gosh.
@mdf106: me too! sorry, my fault for starting it our LO doesn't talk at all yet either, 9 months and not a dada in sight so I feel you
