I thought I would like this time where I get to pick her themes, but I think I'd much rather have her do it. I'm scared to make the party more about what I like then what she likes. But nothing much I can do about it, she can't tell me what she likes!

Yeah, no worries for now. Who else is going to pick it? I picked Paul Frank for the 2nd bday since she has a preference for things now but I fear she may already be out of her Paul Frank phase!

This was her third birthday and she told us early on that she wanted "Dora, Princess & Piglet balloons". She got 1 Dora & 1 Minnie Mouse balloon and a Dora cake.

@Andrea: We have a book called Yucchy Yucchy, it's from the dollar section at target. It's all about oscar and how getting yucchy can be fun. You could do all sorts of messy games, it would be fun! But obviously you have a fun theme already picked out.

for her 4th, she totally picked it on her own.
I enjoyed the first two years where I picked it out for her! But having party planning discussions based on her wishes is super fun too.

I don't know if I chose my 2nd and 3rd birthday themes, but I loved them! Strawberry Shortcake for the 2nd (and that cake was pretty cool), and My Little Pony for the 3rd.

@artbee: cool! what little kid wouldn't like that? her april bday is a little bit iffy though. it is probably going to rain on saturday and that type of party is definitely only meant to be done outdoors. we would have to do a scaled down less messy version.

I chose mine from age two. 2 - Barney. 3 - Under the Sea. 4. Princess Tea Party. 5 - Farm Animals
I think I'd let them pick pretty young, maybe with some encouragement and direction.

The only one I remember is Rainbow Bright at age 4, but I was a very stubborn kid so I'm sure I started picking them early!

@Andrea: We have a problem with outdoor parties too because LO is a July baby. Way too hot, unless it's a pool party.
@Arden: Fun! I'm a piggy lover so I'd love for LO to have a farm friends party- plus we have a little farm right down the street that does parties. I had to stop myself from doing a pig party this year because I know it would be all for me and not for her.

@artbee: hmm the first year... no theme, but it was at the Santa Monica Carousel and we had popcorn and cotton candy machines. it was filled with pink & white decor with touches of brown... The second year, I chose Ni Hao Kai-Lan (an adorable cartoon she was into) and the decor was red/aqua/pink. The third year, she was into Toy Story 3 and it worked out perfect because I incorporated the characters carrying the number "3" (her new age) easily! And for 4... She chose a princess party at the last minute! Her and her friends loved it. Peak princess age right now

@artbee: aww thanks! are you planning your July baby's party now? my 2nd DD was also born in July... I have noooo idea what we'll do yet. It's right after the 4th of July! maybe a beach theme... Hmm.

I think I'll start asking LO what theme she wants when she's 4 or 5.

I think we'll let our kids pick with guidance at 3 or 4. Ideally I'll be able to come up with some fun themes and give them 3 or 4 to choose from. I'd like to avoid cartoons just because I like other themes better (camping, spa, beach, etc).

@eeh: I'm with you with the wanting to avoid cartoons.... but I have a feeling LO will want some sort of party centered around her favorite tv show, movie, charactors. I'll just have to get creative with it!

@artbee: @eeh: yes LO's definitely get to a stage where they are into cartoon characters and want those themes for their parties! But there are definitely ways to have those parties but keep the licensed character appearances to a minimum so it doesn't seem cheesy. I do figure this is just a stage too and when they get older we can do some of those other fun themes. one DD of mine is born around a week before Valentines so I can't wait til she's okay with having a party centered around hearts and love!
